  1. You can still get them. I used to use them, however my dermatologist told me they are snake oil - absolutely useless. He was quite surprised people (poeple?) still use 'em... So I stick with a factor 50 sunblock and make sure I reapply regularly.
  2. Once again - thank heavens for helmets. That could have been his head. Strengths to him...
  3. Sadly, this is not new. A friend of mine's 14 year old son got attacked in their suburb in Johannesburg by a guy armed with a screwdriver and had his bike taken a few years ago...
  4. No publicity can be bad publicity! Cr@p article, but at least CM got a mention. An interesting attitude that I have noticed is that I commute to work on my bicycle and the black guys at work are openly antagonistic towards me because they say only poor people ride bicycles and as a "professional" I should be driving a car. So maybe 1200 white boys (and girls) riding through Joeys will show these people with their stereotypical (and thus ultimately racist) opinions that it is OK for anyone to ride a bike. Saddle up white honkies!
  5. I use PVM bars - a wide range of flavours, but that's a personal choice. Also carried nuts & raisins. Then the "snacks" at the water points. But I was sick and tired of energy bars after a week... As for hydration, I'm not too fussy about actual product (except I try to stay away from the sugary stuff like Powerade and Game). I would say that being disciplined about hydration is more important than the actual product used. I made sure that I worked out exactly how much I should drink on each section of each stage and stuck to my plan even if I didn't feel like it. After one day it's ok to be under-hydrated, but if you accumulate that over a week (or hit an extra hot day) then you're in cr@p... So my advice: just make sure you hydrate well on every section of every stage. Be disciplined and stick to it...
  6. Yep - we will be riding through December from the Rosebank Engen (next to McDonalds c/o Oxford and Bolton, Rosebank). However, most of us are still working, so we'll be doing our normal rides from 05:00 to 06:30 - not quite what you are looking for. However, if you'd like some company for a little while, please feel free to join us!
  7. I ride with the ICG and as usual there are two sides to the story: - firstly this road is narrow and the guys always end up in the traffic as soon as they move out a little; - the group is moving fast here and slower guys are being overtaken (you will notice that they are riding two abreast - NO MORE!!!), this is allowed by the Road Traffic Act; - there is a pothole up ahead and the group does have to keep away from the side of the road in this section. So the photo and commentary are misleading. The criticism is unfounded and the original poster a prime c0cktonsil. However, having said that: - the ICG does try to ride responsibily and we do try to ensure our guys ride at most two abreast. Quite often we demand they guys keep in single file; - we do not always succeed. We have several guys, who no matter how much you tell then, or how much you ask, always insist on riding towards the middle of the road. It is not something we (or I personally condone - I think they are inconsiderate pr1cks), but we can't force them to ride towards the side; - and yes, sometimes we do **** it up and ride all over the ****ing road until some motorist hoots at us and tells us to get the **** off their road. But we try not to do so too often. Hope your knickers dry out soon...
  8. When you are fined, are actually arrested and then released to either appear in court or pay the AG. For this you need some form of acceptable ID. If you don't have any, you cannot be released and will be taken to the cells until you can give some ID. So, yes. If you are planning on breaking the law, it woukd be a good idea to carry your ID.
  9. Riding in bunches has always been illegal. No change there. So I assume authorities will continue to condone it during sanctioned cycling events. As for cyclists overtaking one another, that has always been legal. I hope they do start clamping down on the ****wit cyclists who block the roads on their weekend rides, though...
  10. It was the original Emperors...
  11. Now THAT'S something worthwhile! I hope this is the first of a new wave of derailleur-less products. And in 29", 26" and 650B! I wonder how robust and what the maintenance on it is? Jawohl!
  12. If you use the facilities, then yes. I've been a member of Cycle Lab for 9 years now and get fantastic value for money. The post-94.7 hospitality alone was worth it. Then Argus and other races, Ride mag subscription, Club and Think Bike marshalled rides every week... Bargain if you use it.
  13. No they don't - or else you don't. Pedestrians (including runners/joggers) on the road are "jaywalking" (edit: unless there is no pavement). And you're not allowed to ride your bike on the pavement where they should be.
  14. IMHO MTBers are the new roadies. If you want a nice bunch of guys who just enjoy riding their bike and being friendly nowadays, just ride on the road...
  15. Nope. No need to blame ghosties and ghoulies. This is the work of people. Plain and simple. There are some sick ****s out there...

No queue for racing tandems. ;-) Just make sure you have your registration paper - the queue for the queries line was out the door.

Always two sides. I nearly got knocked over by a "lady" yesterday who decided that she was buggered if she was going to stop at a stop street for me on my bike. If I had gotten my hands on her keys I would have put them somewhere she would have complained about, too...
  19. Banning MP3 players is a great idea. GoPros on the helmet a good idea. Shirtsleeves is probably for neatness? We don't want roadies looking like blerrie MTBers...
  20. Didn't Cannondale sell softails some years ago?
  21. This is ****ing insane. But I presume there must be at least one d**s out there prepared to try it...
  22. Was he faster than you?
  23. Have a tough ride, did we? If you'd stayed on the bike you wouldn't have confused them!
  24. Let's hope this is the last we ever hear of DG...
  25. Already done to death. If Racetec say the race was around the block does that make it so? Average speed is irrelevant (except for your own interest)...
