Pondering on this question for a while .... As a 53*28 is the same gearing as a 39*20 and there is some overlap in gearing would it be better to use the smaller chainring when possible? Knowing that you will essentially be pedaling at the same cadence for the same speed. Now the 'engineering' part ... I'm thinking that the leverage on the smaller chainring is better considering where the chain is on the length of the crank (closer to the center). Not sure if the now 'lower' position of the chain on the cassette would have an influence? Now I guess the real issue would be let's say you're riding into a headwind for some time or you're looking at a long day/night in the saddle, would there be enough 'marginal gains' to even bother ... Ok so now my brain is all confuddled but hopefully it makes sense to those engineers and others interested in engineering that could set my mind at ease 🤔

And not always for the better I'm afraid but then again I'm old and cranky 🤪

In all the many years I have ridden in that 'Heineken' area it's the very first time that I have seen water 'flowing' down that little stream ...

And I'm sure they'd find a loophole with that big blade ... anything not to warrantee it 🙄

As an aside ... I know quite a few bike shop owners that hardly ride regularly anymore. And yes I also know 1 or 2 that still do Just an observation

My Tarmac Disc is one of those 'SCS' frames, stands for 'Short Chain Stay' if I recall ... Mine was one of the very first disc road models. I just run normal QR MTB hubs on mine despite what they say ... A bit tricky though because the chain can occasionally come off if you are in the big chainring and 1st on the cassette.

Straight to the gravel for this build! Got a WhatsApp that has shocked my system into getting ready for one of my favourite times of the year in the south 😎👍

Slept on it and decided to go with this routing (for now)
