  1. Thanks for all the ideas guys !

It was very misty the morning when I started, which had me worried re safety, so I avoided the R27 - and I got a lift to Malmesbury where the mist was starting to clear.

Decided to use my MTB because of unknown road/shoulder conditions on suggested routes.

I went Malmesbury - Hopefield - Vredenburg - St Helena (last bit on the old gravel/newly tarred road)

It was a bit shorter than I was hoping for, but I found the road fairly quiet, and the shoulder was good all the way.

Definitely will do this route on a road bike next time.  The last Vredenburg/St Helena piece was stop and go because of water drainage channels under construction etc. but no problem on the MTB because I rode in the closed lane.

Has anyone tried this method before?

Rubber Latex with a Latex block will work on small deposits like a road tyre. MTB tyres, in my experience, when they need to cleaned, it is usually because there is a lot of sealer to get off.

I tried rubber bands (about 80% latex) but it was impractical - and getting a 'block of latex' i.e. crepe is not so easy. (unless you buy bulk latex and cast your own blocks.) But, MTB tyres with a thin latex /sealer coverings are actual not a problem - but thick heavy dried deposits or blobs, will be difficult to get off with a 'rubbing latex block'.

The method I use, in a post earlier, works well for me - possibly because the cloth get a fine layer of sealant/latex on it.

  3. Thanks Guys !

    Great suggestions, thank you.

I think the Malmesbury, Hopefield, Vredenburg, Stompneusbaai - basically the R45 looks like an alternative to the busy coast R27 road.

I like the suggestion of going via Malmesbury, Darling and West Coast Park - but I ...time/distance makes this a maybe.

Hi everyone, I'm a social cyclist making use of a mountain bike so that I can do basic off-road and road riding. My casette is showing signs of wear, so the thought of upgrading a bit crossed my mind. Currently 10 speed 11-34. See pic. The question is, what range within 10 speed can I upgrade to?

Will 11-42 be compatible without changing other components?

I agree with the comments re 3X front means you don't normally need a bigger cassette. If some steep hills are too much for you - and you have a 24 upfront, then a 36 at rear was popular. And , yes, a 36 cassette will fit because of your long derailleur cage.

But you could also change to a 22 up front - Still cheaper that changing cassettes.

Personally, the cassette in the pic still looks good to me.

Got the van, got the driver and the company the van belongs to. Opened 3 charges. Got witnesses. Got reference to an incidence that the same perpetrator was involved with last year with riders. Biggest problem is the Police. I am trying to get them to be pathetic, but have not yet been able. I will make a citizens arrest this coming week if they don't act. It's a complete outrage. If anyone knows a decent legal avenue, pls PM me.

.....Biggest problem is the Police. I am trying to get them to be pathetic, ....😂

    They are already pathetic

If you don't like the commentary, mute it. If you don't like the free live feed (technical glitches and all), don't watch it. Watch the highlights reel in the evening. The constant bashing of the commentary and free live feed every year is getting old. The guys are doing their best.

Yes. Commentators doing their best - but, that doesn't mean it's any good, Gerald needs a speech therapist,  listen to him - cannot concentrate, so he fills the simplest sentences with 'erm' every second word. Cycling needs to find someone better or get him therapist assistance.  (And the; it's 'free' viewing comments, are nonsense. )

  7. Hi, going up to Jo'Burg for a short visit; Any suggestions for good fun trails - (staying on kayalami side of town) :-

I will be riding alone - so prefer :

    • Very Safe area/trails
    • Lots of single-track
    • Minimum 40km (or more, but under 1000m ascent)

(I'm from CT area/trails - so please not suggestions like Steyn-City - made that mistake once on the pre 94.7, mtb event)

Yup, Recently, Gerald hosted at the PE2Plett and listening to him at the nightly briefings, gave me hope again - I thought he sounded normal and capable of having a smooth discussion.

    But what a failure yesterday.

The problem is, he can't concentrate - every simple sentence is mostly filled with 'erm' 'ah' 'eh'.

    He needs a speech therapist.

This is the only scientific paper, the rest of the links are articles.  I also don’t believe everything on a Google search.

When I asked, it was because your comment stated scientific results. My knowledge of scientific literature is lacking, but I have some good resources to assist. This was more statistical and not very well controlled as an experiment.

Sorry, if you don't believe in science; I can't help you.  (If you are really interested, you don't need me to find research that comforts you: it's everywhere.)

Of the many things I'm told daily by my wife, doctor, the media et al are going to kill me I'd rate that pretty low on the worry meter .... Having said that, if that's the 'crusade' you want to pursue then please don't let anyone stop you!

Yeah, I know - it's the story of 'if the sun doesn't kill you, the washing machine will'

My OP was not a crusade to convince anyone — but rather, that it occurred to me, that I need to also consider scientific proof re plastic dangers: in a cycling context.  The point was that we try to avoid or eliminate the bad stuff (like your wife and doctor tells you):-  do more exercise, eat less animal fat, use low fat dairy, eat more fibre etc etc. But, when it comes to continually drinking vast amounts of water etc out of Plastic bottles: we say ah, what the F*#k, I'm going to ignore science (that shows we vastly underestimate how seriously plastic affects our bodies)

It's similar to smoking; if it doesn't kill you instantly, it can't be that bad ! Right ?

Anyway, I think we are all tired of this topic now.

Oh, you are such a loafer - this is what HR average should look like :

I have a bunch of alu and steel bottles with different tops that fit onto them for different situations

They such as cycling bottles. Fine on slow long runs or hikes and 100 milers, or the MTB if you're on the trails stopping to drink.

But, they are junk as cycling bottles in any sort of intensity.

I eat food I don't cook myself pretty often, I smash fried potato more than I should and I have put a number of naughty things in my body over the years, my plastic bottles are the least of my issues

They look like a good option to me, of course nothing is as easy, cheap or convenient as plastic (for almost all daily-use items), but isn't this basically what guys cycled with before plastic?

I do hate the idea that you cant sqeeze it !

  13. While washing my water bottles and cleaning the tops - after yesterday's mtb ride, I started thinking of the plastic related risks.

Plastics are ubiquitous, cheap and convenient, but they leach chemicals that contaminate our food and drink. Scientific results to-date linked plastic to serious health issues such as endocrine disruption, weight gain, insulin resistance, decreased reproductive health, prostate and breast cancer, various diseases, disability, diabetes, cardiovascular health risks and premature death at every stage of its life cycle.

We are all aware of the plastic dangers, yet we spend hours on our bikes (often daily) drinking from plastic bottles and hydration packs, and seldom think of the plastic leaching into our bodies.

Even when it is considered a 'safe plastic' bottle, other conditions like the sun/heat or the cleaning-scrub of the bottle affects the plastic breakdown. (I have had bottles getting so sun/road reflection heated that eventually they were impossible to drink)

I checked the ratings on the bottom of my bottles for some comfort of the plastic rating.  "BPA FREE" are the common keywords we now expect to see.

Although Science shows that some BPA-Free plastic is made of BPA substitutes that are just as harmful as BPA.

(Water bottles and food containers are often labelled "BPA-free."; However, scientists warn chemical alternatives, such as bisphenol S (BPS), aren't safe for people to use.)

I noticed my bottles from the * CT Cycle Tour, * Ride Jo'burg, and some others had a Triangle with the number 4 - The symbol we associate with safe or BPE free,

However, the bottles from USN, W2W, Biogen - had nothing on the bottom - therefore I have no info on the rating - (or the manufacturer)

Are these bottles Safe ? Are these cheap imports ? Are our cycle bottle 'suppliers' negligent ? Are we killing ourselves while trying to stay healthy ? What alternatives do we have ?

Ok, I'm going to go ride my bike now with the knowledge that we are all F#%*ed in so many ways.

Busy doing a strip down and rebuild full service of my roadie-HT.

After redoing the bearings I noticed the front wheel was out of balance, and always stopping with a specific spot at the bottom.

It is a 700C50 Panaracer tyre, with about 5 000km on, still looks very GOOD.

Rear tyre suffered from glass cuts and was replaced a while back.  Mid last year I lost the new rear tyre with a side wall cut on a broken cat-eye ....  This is what it looks like after about 1 500km.  Already a small accumulation of sludge in one spot (did not take a photo of this)

    Screenshot_20240112_111258_Gallery.jpg.6989beb90079d038efc55f602412c0c9.jpg

In stark contrast, the sludge (yellow bottle with the Rhino on it) in the front tyre was regularly topped up.  Every 6 months I would extract the remaining liquid with a syringe, and add new sludge.

THIS is what a few years worth of top ups look like ....

    Screenshot_20240112_111325_Gallery.jpg.aa034825650513de9e13b62f041ee226.jpg

And the cause of the out of balance .....

    Screenshot_20240112_111335_Gallery.jpg.fe15df45fe349d4260acb6ac0f95dd62.jpg

I tried the rag-on-a-screwdriver trick on a section with minimal sludge ..... not sure what I did wrong, but the rag barely buffed the sludge.

Out with the high pressure jet .... tyre over the chopping block ..... me in my best Rambo pose and going bos .... tyre was cleaned very quickly.  Removed the new rear tyre and also cleaned it with the pressure yet.

Will redo the tubeless tape, and replace the valves as part of the full service.

Perhaps you rag was too synthetic / nylon - and slips. Try cotton rag. This process has never failed me. Actually, your sealant pic looks 'oily' ? I use Stans, Enduro or my home-made, all are/have latex that comes off with friction - which is why my method works for me.

If we assume it's not this guy - how did the perp. get this photo ? This guy is a stuntman and can be found on various websites. But is it him, or someone else using this pic as a ID ? Looks like a selfie - from lost/stolen phone perhaps ?
