  1. My luck finally ran out today. First ride on a brand new bike and a car illegally turned across a solid white line gunning for a parking place, to park illegally facing the wrong direction. I had nowhere to go🤬 I ended up low-siding into a parked car, narrowly missing the transgressor. Miraculously I escaped with a graze, but the new bike wasn't as lucky. The damage appears mostly cosmetic with some deep scratches on the pedals and cranks, grips (easy to replace) are completely torn. I really don't want to claim from my insurance for this, so my question is... what is reasonable to expect the driver to pay for replacement? I can see him objecting to replacing my R4k pedals because of gnarly deep scratches, but f*$k, my brand new bike looks like s#*t after 20km through no fault of my own.
  2. Saw 2 people intentionally just Chuck the wrapper of their nutrition in the middle of the road… hope they choke next time! And these people were near the back of the field, not exactly racing in a peloton. Why are people so ***🤬
  3. Personally I find the touchscreen easier and simpler to use, more intuitive.

  6. That mural is a really great tribute! What about using the remaining funds for a similar mural for Calib de Kock in Sea Point? Either here (not first choice, private property permission required etc) Or preferably here on the side of this building (more impactful with the foot traffic on the prom, and screw the permission just ask for forgiveness afterwards). Having said that they have just completed some new murals on other buildings on the promenade so perhaps getting permission won't be such a.... mission (https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1F58fCFaSQ/ )
  7. The new Garmin Rally 110 and 210 that were launched last week are rather compelling. A very close comparison to the Faveros now.
  8. Everyone! The law also says you must drive a roadworthy vehicle.... hows that working out? Obviously it's not realistic, the point I was trying to make is that a radar does make a difference to my experience on the road.
  9. My 2c.... The changes they have made to the cycling lane in Bree street have made them WORSE! I go down Bree street a couple of times a week at all times of the day and I don't think I have EVER successfully cycled the lane from start to end without having to go around an illegally parked car, even before 6am. The kerbs they have put in now make it even worse, because cars now back up to right where they end, so now you are stuck in the lane and have to bunny hop the yellow kerb to get around the illegally parked car... not ideal on a road bike. Warning hoots should not be a thing! You are approaching from behind and can see when its safe to pass, so just do that! If they are riding like a chop and unnecessarily taking up too much space, then by all means blast a hoot (not referring to owning the lane when there isn't actually enough space/blind corners to pass safely, guess thats a different debate rider will never win). Lastly... I would not object to riding with a Garmin Varia being a law, just like wearing a helmet. I can't ride without mine, it adds so much value to the experience on the road!
  10. Got threatened by a driver wielding a baseball bat on Beach Road in Sea Point yesterday afternoon. No other cars around, two lanes, just riding along.... honestly still can't work out what I possibly could have done to trigger him, so just going to assume it was jealousy over my well defined calves 🤷‍♂️
  11. By "we" you mean people right? People are c@#*$... some ride bikes, some drive cars.
  12. If the car door being opened is what caused this accident, the way it was reported on SmileFM news at 6pm last night is really disingenuous and infuriating as a cyclist. I quote the news reader: "... another cyclist was killed when he fell off his bike and was struck by a car". People opening car doors without checking that it is safe to do so is clearly a serious problem, why omit the cause of the accident from the news report? A perfect opportunity to remind people to check before opening their door so they don't kill someone. Instead the story just widens the divide between cyclists and car drivers, because going on the information provided on a national news broadcast implies that the accident was in fact caused by the cyclist falling off his bike. Makes me f*#!%&@ angry! 😔
  13. That's an odd size. Do you mean 31.6mm or 30.9mm... https://www.on-lynecomponents.com/collections/dropper-posts/products/lyne-contour-v2-0-external-dropper-post?variant=49868425134362
  14. We were a group of 11, so chose places that could accommodate us all, but most of them have options for fewer people too. I would stay at all of these places again, they were all great Start (Keurboomstrand) Airbnb Night 1: Garden route trail park (trail house and backpacker dorm) https://www.gardenroutetrailpark.com/ Night 2: Oudtshoorn https://www.riversideguestlodge.co.za/ Night 3: Van Wyksdorp https://www.rooiberglodge.co.za/ Night 4: Grootvadersbosch/Heidelberg https://www.strawberryhillfarm.co.za/ Night 5: Greyton Airbnb
  15. To back this up with data...taking Strava local legend stats for a run and a ride segment on the Glen (this is conservative as it excludes walkers, ebikes and non-strava people) in the last 90 days: Running: 2387 segment efforts by 1262 athletes Riding: 3365 segment efforts by 1038 athletes That's roughly 64 people per day in the last 3 months using the Glen, which I think makes it one of the busier areas?
  16. This is the biggest misconception!!! that road is busy with walkers, runners, riders and the staff walking to work at The Lawns. I use it multiple times a week at all times of the day and have never ever NOT seen a couple of other people. Don't desert it now.. go enjoy it. Hopefully the "security" patrol wake TF up and do a better job, I see them on that stretch sometimes, but as an entry/exit point for Lions head it should be focussed on by them.
  17. Selfishly I hope it never gets fixed. It’s a great NMT link between town and Clifton. It’s perfect for doing climbing intervals on the bike. I’ll take that over the extra 5min it takes me to get to the beach by car😆 I believe the repairs are rather complicated because they essentially have to build a bridge on the side of the mountain and it’s part of Sanparks land, so environmental impact assessments will cause even further delays.
  18. People are so *** (not the land owners!)🤬
  19. Here is a GPX of the Kleinmond Black route (official route starts at Middelvlei Rd, look for the signs, its at 13.1km on this gpx). It's a nice ride. https://www.strava.com/activities/8739232385
  20. What are the thoughts on being able to report drivers yourself? I believe you can do this in the UK and recently saw that the Overstrand municipality have implemented an online reporting system I think. Case in point… this morning a polo went through a red light on Beach Road when two cars (seen entering from the right) were already pretty much through the intersection, that’s how red the light was. Nevermind that they were cruising over 70km/h in a 50 zone🤷🏼‍♂️ varia 0204.mov
  21. Did he drop a chain in the sprint at the finish? On the coverage it looked like he was putting the chain back on after crossing the line.
  22. Again this weekend… probability of it being the same guy? 🤬
  23. Sorry to her this. What time did it happen?
  24. I really miss the Totalsports Challenge duathlon from Gordons bay to Kleinmond! With a road ride, road run, mountain bike and finishing with a beach run, it was such a cool race and offered something unique. Also the Piketboberg race and when the Trailseeker was a 5 race series in the WC (but appreciate the quality offered by the two we still have on the calendar) would be great to have back!
  25. You take POPI quite seriously 😂
