  1. Create a Garmin Connect account and use https://tapiriik.com/ to sync from Strava back to Garmin. Where there is a will there is always a way.
  2. I've noticed that Strava only uploads are not reflecting, even with cadence and heart rate, until they are loaded on Garmin Connect.
  3. But you hung up before I heard your dulcet tones. Easier than dialling a number me thinks.
  4. Live a little. It will only bring up my phone number.,,,,
  5. They don't. The 70% number came in years ago when polar was the only way of uploading workouts and we got 100 or 150 points (depending on how many we'd done that month) for >30 minutes PLUS 50 bonus points for >45 minutes if over 70% of max. I was worried about this on my trainer when doing intervals so did some testing. My actual max was 209 so achieving 70.1% of this average for every spin was impossible so I set an age based max of 172 on both the watch and polartraining to get the bonus points. When I set my watch back to actual and then when I used a hack to load Garmin files from rides my Max went back to actual but it made no difference to the bonus points for >70% strenuous activity. Plenty times an average for a session was mid 60 due to interval and recovery. Now that we can upload activity on virtually any platform and the points system has moved from 50 bonus points to a free hot chocolate or smoothie the >70% has not changed. It is a stated requirement but they have no way of managing it across all the platforms out so it's just time based. I guess if you're a fat and slothful person anyone who can do over an hour exercise MUST be over 70%.
  6. If you have a power number steer clear of zones which are really only useful for heart rate based training. This morning I completed a HiiT session and felt completely shot but my heart never got going. If I was using zones I would have been slacking but I did my intervals at PPO for 60% of TMax so it was a good workout. We don't know what the pros base their training on, JVR would be silly to disclose his FTP or Max and remain competitive in the pro peloton so publishing a "350/290 for 5 mins repeat" type workout is more wow than helpful to us as hacks. Rather than guessing what power you should do for over/under training, I'd suggest rather do HiiT training - here is a very good article I found years ago on the subject: http://www.bicycling.com/training/fitness/ultimate-interval Do this for a few months and it's guaranteed you'll either become religious or improve your FTP. Or both if done right. You'll need a power meter to do it, heart rate won't help.
  7. DSTV streaming is behind a login that is meant to be for customers only but systems don't always work... Best suggestion is find someone with DSTV like an elderly parent and use their account to register. Then use that username and password to watch your sport streamed in low quality. Also works on ipads etc for anything on catchup. You just need a paid up account.
  8. There have been many topics on cycling streams. Every European and most other races are available on the pirate streaming sites, have been for years. Picture quality has improved in past year or so but still not HD but at most races you have a choice of the commentators you want to listen to, and languages. Eurosport player is fee based and will give you every race they cover. There are a few youtube channels that have the last hour or two, ad free, of the major races in HD a few hours after completion of the race so PVR/recording becomes irrelevant. I have watched every classic, GT and most other races in this way for a few years. Only ballache has been syncing the picture on the stream to HD picture on the DSTV feed. But even that has become easy.
  9. Biggest con ever. Get 50% of your fuel spend back*. Simple Google search: Bollocks. I was conned by this. Guess what. Your DQ points are used. Not your fuel spend. So 50% of fuel spend is rubbish. But I guess you have to read the very small print....which I did after I got R30 back a month on spend of about R2,500 a month.... * After a zillion years if you do a thousand things you would never normally do we will refund you your DQ-Track points multiplied by your fuel spend subject to a maximum of R800 I think for a fee of R40 odd a month.
  10. As only 30,000 points are available per annum does it really matter? And as coffee rewards capped at 1,200 per week does it really matter?
  11. And I don't drink coffee...but vida have a great hot chocolate. Kids are loving the rewards programme.
  12. Only issue I've found now that Netflix is herein SA is that the Netflix icon is not on my Samsung Smart TV but all the DSTV rubbish is there. Will it come from Samsung as an update?
  13. Treated myself so some Schwalbe One Tubeless tyres on new carbon 35/45 rims laced to Project 321 disc hubs with ceramic bearings on my new BOOTH road bike with Red22 Hydro disc brakes.
  14. I tested this system for 4 months, it was very interesting at first seeing cars approaching from behind move up the display unit but found its usefulness was very limited. The real value proposition came when I returned the unit, would I miss it enough to splash R3k to have? Pros: improved u-turn and right turn planning as could see if cars nearby on screen rather than having to look behind a number of times.Instant red indicator on the display for speeding cars usefulVariable light intensity was great for those riding with me as they could see when cars were close by.Cons: battery life - I never go more than 3 hours from the rear unit if smart light on. This made unit useless on longer rides and meant I had to have an additional rear light.2 additional items to charge after every ride.cars got "lost" on the display if they travelled at your speed when following to suddenly be next to you without indication on the display.Verdict: On my first ride without it I was happy to have the R3k and not have the distraction on my bars. 2,000 km later I feel the same.
  15. Cycliq Fly6 does exactly that.
  16. You do not understand the law. Nowhere in the Traffic Act is inconsideration taken into consideration. A slower moving vehicle cannot be considered illegal because it is obstructing the freeflow of traffic. Unfortunately a big part of the problem cyclists face on the roads is that motorists have no idea that cyclists have as much right to be on all roads as motor vehicles do. Except freeways. And that cyclists do not have to ride in the gutter. But they do seem to be aware that cyclists must not ride two abreast. Which happens to apply to cars too: You may not overtake a vehicle that is overtalkng another vehicle.
  17. Incorrect. There is nothing in the act about slow moving traffic, or any vehicle, keeping "as far left as possible". There is also no reference at all to obstruction of the free flow of traffic. It is courteous not to obstruct traffic, not a legal requirement. Edit: incorrect is one word.
  18. Specifically a pedal cycle is a vehicle as defined in Act (NATIONAL ROAD TRAFFIC ACT 93 OF 1996) and as such is allowed to ride on the road. Other vehicles may only overtake where it is safe to do so, at a safe distance. Accordingly you don't need case law, every vehicle is entitled to a lane. There is no mention in the national act of keeping far left or riding in the gutter, common sense dictates that it is sometimes safer to do so. In the Western Cape the regulations were amended for cyclists to keep as far left as is safe to do at the same time the 1 metre passing law was introduced. However after a couple of years not a single driver has been charged with contravening this regulation, never mind prosecuted and found guilty.
  19. "of these incidents around 40% occur when a cyclist is hit from behind." In SA over 80% of cycle fatalities are when a cyclist is hit from behind. I think Garmin are wrong on this number they use. I used one of these units for a few months. The rear light that gets lights up when cars approcah is a great feature but I found the bar mounted dispaly unit no so useful. At first it was nice to see a warning for cars behibd you but the more I used it the more I saw faults in the warning system, cars would "get lost" and I found it better not to have it at all than have it and not rely on it. Only gripe about the rear light is the battery length, I never got more than 140 minutes out of a full charge which makes it unsuitable for long rides. Also, the cost quite high, A Fly6 HD camera with lights is less than the rear light of this unit. Admitidly without radar.
  20. Gee, I'm disappointed me and my mates aren't listed in the press release. After all it is titled South African presence at Tour de France. I guess we'll have to try harder. Watch out for us on some arb hill.
  21. Discussed this with Brett Herron of City. Unfortunately removing vehicles was challenged in courts by a selfish parker whose car was towed and found to be illegal. Solution is clamping but resources are limited, ie, law enforcement is busy removing excrement tossing tyre burning mobs or dodging gangland bullets, parked car crime is not seen as crime. I'm told this issue will be addressed in the renewal of the parking management tender later this year.
  22. Go to http://www.steephill.tv/and watch every cycle race live. In English. World wide. For free. Or take a subscription to http://cyclingtv.neulion.com/cycling/
  23. Ok, try 40 plus minutes at 6.7w/kg and times faster than known dopers up some iconic climbs....the repeated TUEs for cortisone give me a pretty good idea of why this is. Unfortunately you'll never see the rest of the stats as Sky doesn't like to share. Ever wonder why that is?
  24. And you reckon it's impressive to deliver 4.7 w/kg for 6 hours 38 minutes without at least raising an eyebrow and thinking whether its even physiologically possible to do that without help?
