  1. Why so touchy Saffa, beetroot for dinner again? It was just an observation, kind of thinking out loud., and I did say "NICE TO DREAM".
  2. Hmm, yes its been seen here before, rather obviously photoshopped I would say, but nice to dream. porky2008-04-03 12:39:30
  3. It seems Pound was defeated. PRESS RELEASE I NTERNATIONAL COUNCIL OF ARBITRATION FOR SPORT ( ICAS) C OURT OF ARBITRATION FOR SPORT (CAS) E LECTION OF THE ICAS/CAS PRESIDENT Monaco, 4 April 2007 ? On the occasion of its 27th Meeting, held in Monaco, the International Council of Arbitration for Sport (ICAS) elected Mr Mino Auletta (Italy) as President of ICAS/CAS. Mr Auletta performed the function of President ad interim of ICAS/CAS as from January 2007, further to the death of Judge K?ba Mbaye, President and founder of ICAS/CAS. Mr Mino Auletta is Attorney-at-law at the Milan High Court and at the Court of Appeal. He is also legal counsel of the International Athletic Foundation in Monaco and was member of the legal commission of the International University Sports Federation (FISU). although Pound says he will still stay on the board. Mr Auletta seems to have a fine Pedigree though, I am sure he will be fine.
  4. By that same logic shops could slag off another shop on here then. It's interesting how theres this assumption that shops are making money' date=' as if the guys are millionaires. Shall look for the Porche in the parking lot next time.[/quote'] By the same logic then are we assuming that because they dont make "millions" its "okay" to give poor service.? Very few small busineses make their owners millions (irrespective of what field they are involved in) and as most cycle shops can be classes as "small busineses" it would follow that the owners knew this full well before they got involved. Service and profitability certainly have a connection, but its not the only reason busineses succeed or fail, ESKOM has a disgracefull level of service as do most of our mobile telecommunication operators, yet as we all know , they DO make Billions. The best service I recieve is from my local newspaper vendor on the street corner, whenever he sees my car he makes a point of running over risking life and limb to get my paper to me - he is always smiling and dos his job to the best of his ability and respects me as a client, yet I dont think he even owns a "dik wiel" bicycle let alone an expensive german car. Service is a clients "right" - it is a sign of a customers trust in the business he frequents and a corresponding sign of that businessmans respect for the customer, it has nothing to do with how much money the business makes or looses, what car the owner drives or where he lives. Lets not equate money and respect, the two are not interlinked. porky2008-03-31 13:45:26
  5. What sort of fee do they charge the average Joe to use a downhill run? To have a professional run with a cable lift etc is bordering on the infrastructure used on the snow ski runs. This aint cheap, as a civil engineer I did a quick mental (thumb suck) calculation, and I would say to set up a cable lift alone (similar to the one at Hartebeesfontein) would cost at todays building rates approx R8-10 mill. and I think thats been very conservative and very basic. You would need a lot of cyclists coming through there at say R50 / R60 bucks a pop to be profitable.
  6. against Wada and Dick Pound for the way in which they percieve he has been prejudicial against their efforts to stop doping in cycling. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has hit back at the International Cycling Union (UCI) after cycling's governing body announced in a press release that it and former president Hein Verbruggen had filed a law suit against WADA's former president Dick Pound. Of course WADA has hit back and said they are appointing council to defend and to recover funds which they were forced to cover for the tests used in the case against Floyd Landis - the tests were done according to the UCI rules but the UCI said they had no budget to cover the costs and could not pay. WADA it seems was forced to intercede and remit the costs for the tests. Seems strange the UCI has no funds to pay for tests done on its behalf and I assume instructions, but has funds to take legal action against WADA.?? Seems ASO and WADA both have had enough of the UCI who are certainly not endearing themselves to many are they.? porky2008-03-26 07:57:21
  7. Yup, I would never have considered Cancellara for a win either, I looked at the route and thought Naaaaaa, too many hills - ha just shows hey, although I saw Stegemans dropping off the back like a bubble, did he finish, looked shattered when I saw him? Anyway, great ride by Cancellera, all the others were still looking around to see who was going to chase and when they looked again the gap was 300metres and opening, nobody was going to catch him then. porky2008-03-25 10:04:51
  8. If you go to Starbucks for the coffee, you probably also go to Mc Donalds for the burgers. Its not about the coffee or the burgers, its about a culture and an experience, theres hardly a kid in the world who dont want to go to Mc Donald and hardly an adult who wouldnt want to try a "double pumpkin latte" or a "skinny regular" from Starbucks - unfortunately I refer to the American version here - the local Starbucks outlets are a poor example of the original American brand. ...............and I actually like (American) Starbucks coffee, its probably the freshest coffee you will get as the brew is constant, theres a massive variety of flavours, the staff are an institution to themselves (especially in New York) and they are constantly re-inventing new ways to enjoy coffee. ..............Okay Hi-jack over. As for LA s store, my prediction is it will be the most popular, most overpriced, most hyped, most profitable cycle store in the world. My further prediction is he will sell a lots of bikes but millions of LA tee shirts, baseball caps, cycling outfits, coffee cups, key rings etc all promoting "LA" - (who else)??. Good luck to the man, it beats flipping burgers at the local Mac.! porky2008-03-21 05:15:44
  9. Why dont you just join a Virgin Active club, you can spin or ride a stationary bike, or run on the treadmill, or swim,or......................!! I get bored after 10 minutes riding at home, whereas at the gym you are amongst people, theres an atmosphere and you dont need to maintain anything or change tyres. .............plus of course the pretty woman make it a lot more interesting than staring at that print of your grandmother on the wall for 40 minutes.

  11. I had to go to the site in Meyersdal this morningat about 7.30am, I only saw two cyclists splashing around in the rain, when usually there are dozens. ..................and they didnt look as if they were enjoying themselves. ...............and No, it wasnt the Benekes either, who train a lot in this area, although I could understand if they were out. Now I have to ask, unless you are a pro and put food on the table with your cycling, why ride in atrocious conditions, is one or two days of loafing really going to change anything?, and even if it did, (which I doubt) are you going to be winning any races in the near future? If its no fun, (and I really cant see how it can be) why the hell do it? I am sorry, it just makes no sense to me.

Yeah, I like Jans attitude to his professional life, he never took it all too seriously, generally he enjoyed a few pork pies, drank a bit of beer, enjoyed a party or two and didnt worry too much. Some might say those were his failings, but I disagree, intense people just wear you out, Jan took it all in his stride and still found time for some fun.

    BMI tables

Bah,........what a load of nonsense, BMI is for sedentary couch potatoes, not one runner that I train with is at his "ideal" BMI index, we are all overweight according to the scale. I want to see the person who devised this crap run the Comrades in under 7 hours like some of my (overweight ???) training buds.
  14. I just love Schwinn, a real icon in bike manufacturing and years of history to the name. Millions and millions of American kids grew up on Schwinn and Pepsi. Sure they went through a few bad patches (who hasnt?) and got sold off, but their Fastback design has been very successfull and the compact frame is much more comfortable and easy to ride. I also had a Trek 1000 (an awefull old yellow one) at one stage and I agree with Linnega it was easily the most awefull bike I have ever had. Couldnt wait to dump it.
  15. A common thread I have noticed in all the posted pics is how all the riders are taking in and throughly enjoying all the wonderfull scenary.!
  16. Shucks, I forgot about it. I will be setting the PVR for todays stage now before I head out to work. Interesting to see that all the teams still took part even though the UCI has been threatening them with a ban etc. Professional sport is all about commercial sponsorships, and financial requirements, pro athletes are highly paid, its costs a small fortune to organise and run a race of this calibre, sponsors dont do it for fun, they want their pound of flesh and the sooner the UCI and other dinosaur organisations realize this, the sooner we can all move forward together. Commercial sponsors will work with any organising body who works with them, but the UCI has its own agenda and now the companies who provide the finances (and lets be realistic, without the cash their is no race) are flexing their muscles, which, in my opinion is great. porky2008-03-09 23:49:21
  17. Ummm, back to the topic........! Yes, its common WW, I get it as well. When it first happened I got all worried and took myself off to the doc, but he said its probably a slight deficiency which will correct itself over the short term or sometimes a nerve gets a bit tweaked which causes the resulting twitch. I just leave it and after a few days it stops, I guess you could try some vitamin and minerals suppliments, it cant do any harm, but I think you will find it gos away on its own.
  18. Some people "just dont care" you will never change that.!
  19. Huh............whats up here.!! Nobody seems to be taking what is effectively a criminal act (damage to private property) too seriously. Satan / Grey Owl, open a case at the police, (you will probably need it for any insurance claim anyway) then ask the club concerned to identify the youngsters, now take their names and address and hand it to the police - say you will drop the case if they pay for the repair, otherwise...............that big "sersant" is gonna come pay them a visit at home. !!
  20. I wasnt going to post on this because there are two distinct groups of folk on this board, I have read posts where members say, "I WILL go through a red light / stop street - and then try and justify it by saying "when its safe" and others who are obviously in the "obey the law" camp. Personally, I have seldom had an issue with motorists, perhaps its an "attitude" thing, but like Ianj said, I too raise a hand to thank motorists at intersections, if a truck is coming up behind me, I try and ride as close as safely possible to the edge of the road, I raise my hand and acknowledge I know he is there, at lights and stop streets I try and make eye contact with motorists when I feel I dont know where they are going, we are all humans, they understand just by my look or appearance I am in question and they either wave me on or take action which I can anticipate, I make myself visible with bright lighting, even in the midday, its just a habit and if it makes one motorist happier because I was more visible, I consider it a good thing. However, and I am not been critical, many cyclists have the attitude of, :I deserve to / have a right to be here" or "I have right of way so you better wait" or constantly ride around with a "#$%^& you" look on their face. Believe it or not, I firmly believe you WILL be treated as you treat others. There may be a few odd exceptions, but I dont concern myself with them, I concentrate on smiling, thanking, and generally putting out good vibes towards motorists - and as I say, for me it works and I am usually well accepted as part of the moving traffic. Try it, what have you got to loose.
