  1. I didn't know that they changed the route? Is it on the website? I am doing the 21km at Loskop... my first 21km Trail Run. Looking forward to it. After finishing the 21km I am getting on my road bike to support the ultra runners. I am so looking forward being on my bike!!
  2. Congratulations Stretch!! Awesome time, a sub 5 at OMTOM is just brilliant. I saw lots of people fall over the cat eyes, one lady was badly bruised. Congratulations on finishing your first OMTOM in an excellent time. Now 9 to go... Congrats Jackes, to you and your wife! The mental game starts in Hout Bay, but you just have to keep going up to 46km. The last 10km you can make up time if you feel strong.
  3. Hi guys, only got back to Gauteng last night. I am ok, thanks for the posts. My Two Oceans didn't go as planned. The plan was a sub 6, I finished in 6:23. Worst OMTOM time for me. I started cramping from 20km. I chased my mates away, drank a rehydrate but nothing seemed to help. I tried everything but I could not get rid of the tired feeling in my legs. I ran 6:30/km down Chappies I then realized this is going to be a long day. I like the OMTOM downhills and always try and make up time after Chappies and Constantia Nek. I caught another club mate and he gave me a crushed slow mag fizzy. I drank that and after a couple of kms it seemed to help. The last 10km was just pure torture. I am very happy that I did finish as bailing went thru my head at least 100 times. I am also thankful that the nausea is still gone. Overall a well-organised race (except for the unsalted potatoes...). The support also seemed to be less this a year, I think the cold windy weather played a role. Racetec and the OMTOM website said I didn't finish I have sent them a mail, hope they will sort this out. Will email them my GPX file. I have never cramped before at races. Not even Comrades... In hindsight, I think this was pure muscle fatigue after running Irene 2 weekends ago... Rookie mistake. Congratulations to all finishing OMTOM, it is a great accomplishment, and still my favorite ultra. I will go and redeem myself next year.
  4. Thanks for the update Andrew. I will buy another pair of 18's, they are becoming very scarce. See you tomorrow at the expo.
  5. Have you guys seen this: http://www.news24.com/SouthAfrica/News/save-sa-asks-two-oceans-runners-to-wear-black-armbands-in-support-of-anti-zuma-protest-20170411
  6. Don't overthink your strategy. Just enjoy your first Two Oceans. Take it easy the first 28km to save energy for the second half. Take the second half as it comes (especially the downhill after Constantia Nek). Luckily there are lots of support on the road to motivate you. I am hoping for cooler weather, but I have experienced all 4 seasons in one day at OMTOM. Just like Argus, you don't know what to expect. Getting very excited now!!
  7. Such a beautiful race. I love the supporters and all the bands. I would definitely recommend it to anyone that wants to run Comrades to first run Two Oceans.
  8. I wouldn't call myself an expert. I think I am far from it. Like you said your goal is to run OMTOM at your "Comrades" pace. What is your pace going to be? Out of personal experience I would rest/ take it easy this week. You could end up with tired legs at Two Oceans ( you only feel it from 40km onwards) and it will make you doubt yourself and that you will be able to run Comrades at any pace. If you do rest, and you run OMTOM at your goal pace it will boost your self-confidence and training for Comrades. Don't set yourself up for failure. 56km is far. Just my 2c...
  9. Feeling a bit nervous, felt a little niggle in my left calve yesterday while running. I agree with the more sleep this week. I decided not to run at all this week and will be resting until Friday morning, when we go for a short jog in Blouberg, looking at the mountain. I am not good at tapering... I am not a very friendly person to be around. My poor colleagues. I am looking forward to the trip down to Cape Town.... especially the traditional Tequila shot later Saturday evening So, in writing, my OMTOM 2017 plan is a sub 6, taking it easy, enjoying the Cape Town vibe, try to run parts of Constantia Nek, oh and sprinting over the finish line.
  10. That is amazing! Those pro's make it look so easy. Question, why don't we see more South African pro-athletes running the overseas marathons? I am sure we have lots of talent, and it seems some of the overseas marathons are quite flat.Paris Marathon yesterday was 251m elevation.Prague Marathon last year was 184m. (Johnson Crane is 188m of elevation for comparison) Is it a problem with sponsorship? PS. Paris Marathon is on my bucket list!! Can you imagine starting a marathon in one of the most beautiful cities with 50 000 other runners?
  11. As far as I can remember they only open the roads at 13:00. Pack a cooler box and swimming gear. Lekker kuier at the resort waiting for the runners to finish.
  12. Interesting article. http://www.runnersworld.com/psychology/how-to-break-a-running-plateau?utm_campaign=Runner%E2%80%99s%20World&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=t.co&utm_term=852598422 Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk
  13. That really sucks. It is also with the changing of the season... everyone around me is sick. Drink extra vitamins, a Neurobian injection will also help.
  14. I go to China Mall / one of these china shops and buy a cheap long sleeve shirt. I throw it away along the route.
  15. The only reason I went there is because they had stock of the Nimbus 18's. If you decide to go there speak to Lebo. He was very friendly and helpful. The guy behind the counter was very unfriendly and didn't seem interested in what I had to say.
  16. My 2c, first go for a massage. If it doesn't help then Chiro or Physio. I have been for needling twice, it is painful but so worth it. I had a calve injury 2 years ago after running on the beach. Went to a physio for a massage, didn't help. I went for needling and pain subsided within 3 days. Be warned it is not for sissies!
  17. Good grief! Apple, Pear and Cinnamon and Salted Apricot?? Sounds like Purity flavors.
  18. Couldn't agree more with this article: http://www.runnersworld.co.za/more-than-yourself/4-tips-to-survive-the-old-mutual-two-oceans-marathon/
  19. I ran with my new pair of 18's last night. They are definitely wider than the 19's. It just felt so much better than the 19's. At least I have a pair that will last me until Comrades. I will decide after Comrades if I want to give NB a try.
  20. Asics has become just too expensive. I paid R1800 today for the 18's.
  21. After my terrible run with the Nimbus 19's on Sunday, I started looking for 18's. I bought a pair today at The Sweatshop in Bedfordview. The guy was a bit upset/rude that I said the 19's were terrible. I struggled to find stock of the 18's. I am seriously considering changing to NB. I got the brand manager's number of Asics - will ask him what I can do with my 19's as I cannot run with it, paid R2800 for it and only did 100kms.
  22. I don't have any secret ingredients. I don't taper completely for OMTOM. I will probably still run 40km this week with the longest being a 15km run. I do take it easy and try to stay away from hilly routes. Next week I will run the 4km Club TT at an easy pace and then go for a 3km jog the Friday morning in Blouberg just to enjoy the view. I would also like to hear your comments about tapering. One of my Ironman friends don't taper at all.
  23. I am doing my 4th Two Oceans Ultra this year. The plan is a sub 6 as I am taking it easy, enjoying the view and not try to improve my times. I am not near my fitness level where I should be this time of year. Like a colleague of mine said, "Just wing it..."
  24. I am so against medication while running. One of my club mates landed in ICU with kidney failure because of Myprodol. She is 35 years old, has to go for dialysis twice a week and won't be able to run again. I don't think it is just Myprodol that caused it, but I am sure Myprodol made it so much worse. To confess I gave a Mypaid (200mg Ibuprofen & 250mg Paracetemol) to one of my club mates at last year's Comrades. He had terrible knee pain at 15km to go and he was thinking of stopping. He is also against pills. I asked him if he wants it and he said yes. We finished together, the medication helped him to finish. I truly believe that running with pills shouldn't become a habit, and you shouldn't take it unless there is absolutely no other way out (except to bail). Some runners look like pharmacies. It is very dangerous as not all runners react the same way to pills while your body is under so much pressure. I am sure if you ask the Comrades / Ultra running field of South Africa at least 70% will have some sort of tablet with them.
