  1. Don't know why they called it "flat and fast", I completely missed that. Total elevation of 385m (130m less than ODD and 2kms shorter) If you like rolling hills, then you will enjoy Irene. I think like ODD, the heat gets to you. Will be much more enjoyable if it was later in the year. Pretoria's heat is different to Johannesburg's.
  2. O, no Andrew, I hope it is nothing serious like my "brick episode". Try and keep off your foot and rest for a couple of days.
  3. So how was everyone's Irene Race Yesterday? My plan was to just use this as a training run and to take it easy before OMTOM. It was seriously hot once again and it didn't help that the race started almost 20 minutes late. I thoroughly enjoyed the route, even though I started suffering from 30km onwards. I ran with the Asics Nimbus 19's.... HUGE mistake. I had all sorts of problems with the shoes. My feet felt very hot, my shins were sore (which I never experienced before) and after I finished, my feet was in pain (Also not something I am used to). I feel like throwing them away! Generally, I enjoyed the race.I made some friends on the route and I soon realized I just have to keep going no matter my time. I helped a guy to hold on and qualify and he stuck with me to the end. I really enjoy it if you can partner up with a stranger and you can help each other. I told him we don't walk in the last kilometer, and just before the last turn to the finish, he started walking. I shouted at him "No Walking", he just laughed and started running with me again. There are a couple of issues Irene can sort out: 1. NEVER start a race late. It seems there was bad planning with cars coming in on the route where we were supposed to run 2. There were lots of warm water at the water tables. I know you couldn't keep up with demand, but surely more hands on deck can help. 3. The medals were nothing special, it seems the exact same medal was given to the 21km and 48km (Not that medals matter to me, but for an ultra, I expect some sort of "special" medal) I will have to order Nimbus 18's today from Poobies before OMTOM.
  4. April Fools... Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk
  5. Ugh, I bought a pair of Nimbus 19's two weeks ago. It feels very tight even running with it for two weeks now. I see some bad comments about it on the Comrades FB page as well. What type of problems do you experience with the shoes? Should I rather go back to 18?
  6. Thanks for your post, Beesrib. We need to be reminded sometimes that the amount of training we do is a lot and that it is not normal My advice to you is to keep going. Concentrate on running a good 10km, gradually increasing to 12km and then 15km. If you can run a comfortable 15km you will be able to run a 21km. The important part is "gradually" - try not to do too much too soon. Running is tough on the body.
  7. I think you must go to the doc asap to get antibiotics. See how you feel a week before OMTOM. Most importantly listen to your body... We all struggle with that. It is so dangerous running an ultra while being sick/ on antibiotics, it is really not worth it. I agree with Andrew, at the end of the day it is just a race.
  8. I agree with Stretch, ask the doctor about running and the antibiotics. My training partner was on antibiotics and missed ODD. Two days after he finished his antibiotics he ran a 30km without any problems. He did ask his GP how long he should wait.
  9. My colleagues know that if they make me sick they have to go train for me (I work with youngsters that drink a Monster / Red Bull for breakfast and can't climb a flight of stairs) My family also knows no hugs or kisses from March onwards to Comrades. They have made peace with that. I am very cautious, to be honest, I am even scared of going to the gym.
  10. Thanks for the reminder!!! So much running still to do, so little time (especially if you start subtracting the tapering weeks )
  11. No offense taken. I am ok-ish on the bike. I need to ride more. On Saturday in the Cradle, I missed my bike. So much easier cycling there than running there.
  12. So my cycling plans for after Comrades: (Just to proof I don't just run ) I am doing my 10th (consecutive) 94.7 this year. My plan is a double lapper... The first lap I will have to hold on for dear life to stay with the bunch and the second lap to stop at every single water point and alcohol point. I will have to spend some serious time on the bike from June onwards - I am thinking of a couple of 200km training rides... just thinking about it makes my bum hurt. In 2016 I ran more kilometers for the year than what I cycled for the year. So I have my work cut out for me.
  13. Couldn't agree more!! I bought a new bike and I still haven't taken it for a ride.
  14. I have done the marathon before, I enjoyed it. As far as I can remember it has one tough climb and then some rolling hills. Hope she is going to be ok. That is an excellent marathon time! This reminds me of Charne Bosman last year who broke her pinkie toe 7 weeks before WINNING Comrades...
  15. 67km is not bad at all. I normally average 65 to 70km for Comrades, with one or two weeks where it will go over 100kms. I had a terrible week last week. The plan was 30km on Saturday and a 10 -12 km on Sunday. On Saturday my legs were dead tired after ODD... I struggled so the 30 became a 20km. Saturday night a brick fell on my foot (I am dead serious and there was no alcohol involved) Luckily it seems to be ok, and that nothing is broken, just a bit bruised. So yesterday I slept most of the day and felt sorry for myself and angry at myself about the injury. I ran 20km less than my planned week. This week it is Irene 48km... I hope the weather is going to be like yesterday and not ODD. I will test the foot tonight on a 10km - hoping it is going to be ok.
  16. All our club runs start at 6. I must say even on Tuesday morning, on the public holiday I only bumped into 2 runners... where normally it will be at least 10. Maybe it was due to ODD.
  17. My club is doing a 32km long run... which include parts of the Pirates route. I decided to rather not do it the weekend before Irene. I am going for a nice LSD in the Cradle. (Some rolling hills but mostly flat parts between Lion Park and Makiti) Hopefully, fewer cyclists in the Cradle after Argus, I guess it will be the Ironman guys and girls and the odd cyclist training for Emperors.
  18. Here is the Colgate 32km profile. Only 210m of climbing. It is a double lapper. https://www.strava.com/activities/297297415
  19. I ran my PB at the Cradle 21 (Haven't done the 32km as yet) - I like rolling hills. Colgate is very very flat... So it depends on which type of route you prefer. I also prefer the Cradle scenery... at Colgate, you run thru industrial areas.
  20. Maybe ask on the Comrades Facebook page. I think you might get lucky in the next week or so.
  21. Thank you, Cobus, after ODD I am convinced I can survive in heat... Looking forward to the race!
  22. Thank you Cobus, the strava profile does not look "flat and fast". I am running the 48km but will be taking it easy before OMTOM. The route looks like an out and back. Is that correct?
  23. Has anyone done the Irene 48km? What is the route like? This is my next race in less than 2 weeks.
  24. Sorry to hear that Lexx, that sucks. Try and rest, even for only one or two days and try to get more sleep. I usually drink a mixture of Corenza C, Airmune and Linctagon and then I get into bed.
