  1. OMTOM extended Qualifier window to 25 March 2019:
  2. It was a great day out, the weather could not have been better. I didn't run a great time but I felt comfortable until the finish. First 21km since Kaapse Hoop for me and my nausea was under control. I really like the new route. If they keep it the same I would do the marathon next year. Lots of trees, zig-zags and not as flat as previous years. I hosted the club gazebo and from our 20 marathon runners, 17 qualified. Nice bumping into you Andrew! Only thought about it afterward, I should have offered you a beer PS. I don't know if it is logistically possible, but I think if there are more than 10 000+ runners doing the 21 and 42, they should let the marathon runners (or half marathon runners) start 15/30 minutes earlier. The first couple of kilometers felt like an obstacle course.
  3. I will forward your comment to the race organizer. I am good friends with him. I agree that the public should get a notification that there will be a race in the area long before the race. There were a couple of very unhappy motorists yesterday and the marshals had their hands full. I even saw a security company at some of the intersections.
  4. Good luck to all running Akasia & Johnson Crane this weekend! Looks like it is going to be colder weather on Sunday. I am doing the 21 at JC to start off my races for the year. Looking forward to it, it has been a while since I have done a race. This is a training run for me, so no real time expectations. We have 17 runners from our club doing the marathon, holding thumbs for all of them! PS. If you are doing JC for the first time, do not take Tom Jones... traffic is a mess. Rather take the Snake Road off-ramp.
  5. I had a motivational lunch time moment:
  6. I watched a couple of youtube videos regarding breathing while running and I am definitely doing it wrong (just breathing through my mouth) I now try and concentrate on breathing through my nose, even if it is for two or three poles. I am still struggling to do it for long periods of time. I can definitely see a drop in heart rate as well. It also helps me to think of something else while suffering on a hill.
  7. I need to work on this. My mental "fitness" is even worse than my physical fitness at the moment.
  8. + 1!! I am seriously struggling. It feels like I can't breathe and I am not getting used to this heat. It affects my sleeping so I am struggling to get up in the mornings, I run at night but it is pure torture. When will this heatwave be over? It is been going on forever now.
  9. Has anyone done Surrender Hill marathon to qualify? Any comments? The profile looks brutal. I haven't done the marathon before and this year most of my club mates are doing it. I am feeling the peer pressure now...
  10. Congrats on finishing your first 21km! 2:15 is not bad at all, especially for the weather conditions and the Dischem Route. The second half is very tough. I hate walking... The reason is that I get exponentially slower when I start walking. Like Andrew says, some people struggle to get going again. I am one of them. It is even worse when it is hot. I try to stick to a water point 30-second walking regime... but that easily goes out the window when it is hot and there are climbs. You should be proud of yourself, you finished a half marathon. Welcome to the club! We all have bad days, embrace them. Learn from your experience. You now know how to pace yourself better on your second 21. You will also be better prepared in terms of nutrition and hydration. Another lesson is to stick to your plan, do not try and change the plan on the day by joining a bus (unless you feel comfortable with the bus pace). I know it is difficult in the first half when the route is flat and your legs are still fresh. I made the same mistake a couple of years ago at Tough One... I joined the sub 3 bus and the bus driver was very inexperienced (I only realized this when I passed him a couple of kilometers from the finish, he was walking to the finish with his bus sign in his hand without the rest of the bus) I hope you are not discouraged by this. Enter another 21...
  11. I see Gerda came 4th in her first triathlon... I am sure if her swim was stronger she would have won.
  12. We have lots of underprivileged runners in our club. I donate my shoes to one runner that wears the same size. He manages to run another 1000km in my retired Asics Nimbus. I guess we have lots to be thankful for being able to afford new running shoes when they go on special or when we can feel it is time for a new pair. If you have running shoes, drop them off at your club or if you don't belong to a club DM me if you are in Gauteng, I am sure someone at our club will appreciate it.
  13. This is quite doable. I went from zero to Two Oceans in 1 year. I would suggest you start with a 10km training program. Frosty has a good one to follow.
  14. I hope this inspires someone else: https://youtu.be/mNDA-o9yJNw
  15. I bought this soft bottle in December, works great for me. I paid R165 for the 300ml, I see there is a 500ml option for R189: https://www.sportsmanswarehouse.co.za/product/first-ascent-300ml-soft-bottle
  16. I finally got my tax refund from SARS. (There is a major storm coming after 3 months of waiting!) I am now officially looking to buy a Kickr 4. It seems all bike shops are asking the same price. Any LBS/ online recommendations in the Gauteng area?
  17. I agree with the previous comments about Om die Dam. They need to sort out the traffic issues on the Pelindaba road. I have never felt so unsafe as I did at ODD this year. There were no marshals on the long stretch of roads... We were running in the middle of the road with cars and trucks on both sides of the runners. It seems like they are addressing the parking issues for next year. If you have never done an ultra before I won't recommend ODD. Loskop is an excellent ultra, water points are great and there is full road closure.
  18. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/windscribe-free-vpn-and-a/hnmpcagpplmpfojmgmnngilcnanddlhb?hl=en This might help...
  19. With my lack of running since Comrades, I will be supporting at around the 14-15km mark. We will have food and beer, you are more than welcome to stop by.
  20. Good luck to all doing Skyrun and to all the runners dusting off their bikes for the 94.7 scorcher on Sunday! Going for my 11th one (and this time definitely my last one)
  21. I don't understand why it is so cumbersome... you have to click 10 times just to complete your entry and they already have all my details. It is basically confirming your info and paying?? But no there are all sorts of required questions all over the page that you can easily miss and popups... Clearly, they need to spend more of their profit on a proper IT company and web development team. I truly hope and pray number pickup is not going to be the same as this year.
  22. Got mine also done after two hours. This is really unacceptable, I feel bad for the people that will be entering the 21km.
  23. Got my application submitted, it was painfully slow... and now the payments only open at 12... wtf
  24. and the Two Oceans server has crashed...
