  1. I saw one guy running up the DH trails on Sunday afternoon. Guy basically followed the trail up Vasbyt, up the DH trail above Vasbyt all the way to the top of Boulders. Crazy. He was seriously lucky that it was a quiet Sunday afternoon, I know the DH guys are normally about on Sundays.
  2. Big up to Bennet and the crew doing the maintenance. The section from the new divert down to the long bridge is SUPERFAST. Rode it for the first time in two weeks, and the change is amazing. Super smooth, super fast, beautifully bermed where required. It's just begging you to carry top speed through that section. Keep it up guys.
  3. I did the climb from the Glen (Camps Bay) up to Roundhouse on Sunday, and I noticed that that Strava segment is also dominated by mountain bikers. Top 4 positions all held by local pros. I suspect that MTBers are just generally better climbers (flame suit on) especially for longish climbs, but lack the speed on the long flat sections and rolling hills which dominate road races.
  4. Schweeeeeet BogusOne!!!! Either one would work if it saves me from sitting on the seat post. Had a hard 4km slog down from the Snake Trails to the parking lot at Tokai with no saddle. I'll send you pm re collection. I work in Bellville, so I'm sure we can arrange to meet somewhere.
  5. Anybody got a spare saddle for me? Look what I managed to do to my SS up at Tokai on Sunday. Luckily I landed on the back edge of the saddle and not in the middle, could have been a serious injury in a very sensitive spot
  6. I also came a bit unstuck on those farm roads. Don't know why the rolling hills kill me every time. The corrugations were also a bit hectic, so I ended up weaving to stay on smooth sections of the road.
  7. 32T with 11-36 definitely better than my 42 with 11-32 cassette which I was stuck with for half of the race  .
  8. After my mechanicals today, I'm definitely changing to 1 x 10. 2nd wet race spoilt by mechanicals.
  9. My 3 year old takes one look at my rear end and holds his nose. Then runs off to Mom to ask why Dad pooed in his pants. My clothes are in their second round of rinsing in the bath. Mud and fine sand still coming out of my socks.
  10. Had a great ride in the mud. Bit disappointed by the long section on corrugated roads towards the end. Would have preferred a bit more of the Welvenpas ST. Still enjoyed the race though. Also had gear issues, got stuck in my big ring (42 tooth) on the front, so was forced to walk the steeper hills.
  11. With the current exchange rate I suspect closer to R130k - R140k.
  12. I'm doing the same. Wife has another appointment, so I'm a but worried about how long the 65km is going to take in the mud / rain. Already been confirmed that I can change the distance at registration tomorrow morning.
  13. Early doesn't work, unless its like 5:00am. Best time to ride for me is 14:00. I leave home at 13:30, when my boy has his afternoon nap, and arrive at Tokai just before 14:00 normally. Normally just me and a couple of crazy DH guys there on a quiet day. On a busy day you might see about 10 people, mostly regulars. On hot days it's a bit rough cos of the heat, but it makes the cool rides much easier.
  14. Gas braais only allowed if you're in a different country. As it is I get skewe looks when I use charcoal.
  15. 99% chance of rain in Wellington on Friday. 30mm forecast according to Accuweather. Less on Saturday, but the trails are going to be soaking folks. Looking forward to it!!!
  16. I had Onza tires for a while. Superb tires in terms of grip and on trail performance, but tread wore very quickly. Not good if you do a mix of road and off-road.
  17. Newlands not ideal for the Argus, but if you're staying longer in Cape Town its a great area to stay. I stay in that direction, and have no trouble getting to the start every year. Assuming you hire a car, you can book parking at the finish for the day (I think it's about R25). Get there early, park the car and ride the +- 3km to the start as a nice leg stretch before the race.
  18. Totally agree with the sentiment above. Definitely a must do if you're in SA that time of the year. Well organised, great vibe, ride at your own pace. I've done 3: 2012: 7 hr + (+- 17.31km/h) 2013: 5:30 ish (+- 22.0km/h 2014: 4:45 ish (+- 23.2km/h) Enjoyed every one of them. The hills late in the race might be your biggest worry, as stated before. But in reality they're not hectic hills.
  19. I built my SS for abt R500 using my old frame and parts when I upgraded. Best R500 ever spent. It's become my go to bike in winter due to simplicity and low maintenance. I can ride every day in heavy rain and mud without a problem. Just hose it down and lube her up and she's ready to go again. I fully expect to give her away when I upgrade again, as I'll convert my current bike to SS. Don't bring the "market" into something as beautiful as single speeding. Just build it, ride it, and forget about the " market".
  20. Good to hear a happy ending to this story. Part of me is sad that I missed out on the deal of the century though . R8000 for an R80k bike!?!?!? Well spotted whoever saw that ad!!!
  21. If they're issuing the fines in terms of NEMA, there could be a criminal record, as NEMA requirements are punishable with prison time and record. I suspect that they're using the wrong legislation, hence the reluctance of the courts to prosecute.
  22. Beautiful bike!!!! Really sorry about the loss. Anything I own above a value of R2500 goes on the insurance as a specified item, but I also learnt this the hard way. Not R80k hard fortunately.
  23. DAMN!!! Ordered rotor and adaptor from Buycycle. Rotor was delivered today, adaptor to follow. Thanks for the offer.
  24. Cool. Just give me a shout when you're keen. Brakes should be sorted by next week.
  25. If you're looking to try out single speed, you can borrow my SS once the brakes are sorted. Medium. I'm 1.76m, so it might be a bit small, but the seat can be raised.
