  1. A brave statement indeed that "blacks don't play rugby" - although ingnorant is probably closer to the truth. There are more black rugby players than white. In the Eastern Cape, rugby and boxing are more popular sports than football. In many areas of the country, clubs with predominantly (often entirely) non-white players are beginning to dominate the leagues. Having said all that, Super 14 and international teams should be selected on merit. There is ample evidence that the quota's in schooling and age group sport has been very successful in developing players of colour that will soon be in the national and super 14 teams on merit. It is necessary that, particularly at school level, quota's are continued and even increased. At school level, there would have been no change without quota's as the teams are generally selected by "interested" parents and lack any transparency.
  2. Raleigh is a Porbike owned brand in SA. They could have called their "elite" range any other brandname but took the risk and stuck with Raleigh as a known brand. Muddee - what's the difference. The supermarket bikes are also from Probike, whether the elite bikes carry that logo or any other shouldn't mean anything.
  3. I don't think the fact that the guy was a cyclist is relevant. If bad behaviour of a person of a class of vehicle driver gives the rest a bad name then all motorists should be blamed for the behaviour of taxis. I would hope that educated people are a little more sensible. It does sound like the letter writer had cause for complaint and he/she does not seem to lay the blame on cyclists in general. The appeal is for the cycling community to assist in finding this particular person - although black bike, black clothes could be one of 50,000 people.
  4. For the MTB a pump is fine. Tubeless is going to take a while to sort anyway, so you may as well pump the tyre once tube is inserted. On the road bike, I get a punture every 18 months or so, so I don't bother with a handpump. At R15 a pop, a bomb for any puncture is the easiest option.
  5. I have been using Vredestein Fortezza Tricomps for racing, training and commuting for about 4 years now. Durability, feel and puncture resistance per experience is the best I have had. Never ridden a good Conti tyre, but have ridden a few bad ones - enough to put me off the brand forever.
  6. I'll swap it for a 2002 Centuar groupset and a Italian thread BB. linnega2007-10-10 15:00:14
  7. Paris-Tours is the next Protour event - one day classic on Sunday: 15:20 - 17:00SS5http://img.ssz.co.za/aa_liveontv_070814.gif Aso Cycling Paris-ToursWhat you saw tonight was probably some highlights from the Tour of Britain. linnega2007-10-10 14:46:44
  8. More importantly Paris-Tours is on Supersport live - especially since cycling.tv aren't carrying it.
  9. Cooke is not exactly your man for a leadout train and Hunter is not really that type of sprinter. Actually neither is Cooke. I imagine the reasons for signing Cooke is that he is a really good man for the flatter classics. He will be a good addition to the team - two sprinters in the same team moving around the front end can be difficult to mark.
  10. Amazing that the combination of a South African company and French company can result in such a happy customer. The French are better known for poor service than South Africans.
  11. Yes - get a few tools and do it yourself.
  12. So much for the all southern hemisphere semi's?!
  13. Campag, SRAM mostly, but have run others from KNC, Connex.
  14. Personally I have never heard anyone directly complain about Powerlinks or Connex links on a chain. I have been running chain links ever since I bought my MTB's and on the road bike for the past 7 years. Never had a problem - but haven't run a Shimano chain for a very long time! Perhaps the problem is with the chain rather than the links?
  15. That's not an excuse anymore as all the local ref's are *** - especially when the World Cup is on.
  16. There may well be three duplicated gear ratios. The 12-25 cassette gets good spacing with little in the way of duplicated gears. A bit of a pointless argument though as most of us only really use 5 or 6 different gears regularly.
  17. Crap. All the riders are on drugs and they all have something to hide. He beat riders doing exactly the same as what he was doing. Stop living in a dream world. lance won 7 tours all with drugs and people still think he was good for the sport. Not sure who these people are that you mention. Certainly both Procycling and Cycle Sport commented last month about how little Discovery and Lance had done for the sport. In any case, it is not relevant to the point being made. The other riders signed the declaration - Bettini did not. As for Mcquaid, seems he is trying to avoid a lawsuit. Shows the weakness of the UCI and their inability to manage the sport with the vigour required.
  18. Not sure that Bettini winning is good for cycling. As much as the riders whine and complain about their rights being violated, they are primarily responsible for the state of the sport, and need to take responsibility to bring back cycling credibility. If Bettini has nothing to hide or fear then he has no reason not to sign the "declaration for a new cycling". The press in Germany and France are going to crucify him and rightly so.
  19. I've got the 50mm 1.8 which is, as everyone says, a great lense. Most of the time use the Tamron 18-250 which gives me a pretty good range of options. Lense is good - not L glass quality, but good - AF speed is generally very fast, but sometimes misfires. Really cool lense when you just want to carry one. I've also got a Canon 70-300mm "old" lense in my bag but haven't used it much recently. Will probably settle for the 70-200 F4 L when I have some cash to blow.
  20. Not smoking definitely helps. Less than 1 week after stopping I rode my usual 4km 5% climb nearly 90s faster than the previous time with similar wind conditions. Cadence is personal and can largely be ignored once you have found what suits you (except for cadence specific workouts intended to enable faster cadence or require more strength).
  21. Does look like a lot of Shimano-inspired design. Why another company would choose to route their cables externally is beyond me. Systems is 2:1 actuation to make it all Shimano compatible, and my understanding is the spacing is all the same as Shimano. So you could use any Shimano compatible cassette and mix and match your Sampson components with Shimano. Gives the option of carbon levers and Shimano rest.

    Entry fees

The truth is that we the cyclists have no idea what fair value is for an entry fee. We have been treated with cheap rides for years (especially the Capies) and now that the events firstly cost more and provide more, we complain about the rise in fees. Tour Durban last year ran at a loss, which meant the organisers (who organise events for a living) were not able to take their full share. Rather think about entry fees as a purchase. Think what you would be willing to spend on your favourite race as a maximum. That is the fair value to you. For most I imagine races are still cheap relative to amount you would be willing to pay before you chose not to enter.
  23. You can try any of the B&B's in Scottsville, Hayfields or Central PMB as well.
