  1. That is probably because Polar don't particularly weight intensity in the estimation of calories burnt. Largely it is a function of time riding, speed travelled and some adjustment for heart rate.
  2. They weren't successful, but if memory serves he may have been gunned down later on for being a total prick. His brother may have been involved.
  3. In some cases, it is better not to over-insure as this results in arguments between the emergency personnel doing the evac (which you really don't want as it could kill you) and secondly, arguments when you are trying to get your claims settled which you also don't want, although being broke is better than being dead. Either carry ID and medical aid details in armband, back pocket, saddlebag, hydration pack etc and rely on your medical aid. Or if you know your medical aid is crap, then have a look at these alternative options.
  4. The David Millar incident was a Vuelta stage where Millar protested the conditions of the race by climbing off his bike a metre before the finish line and never crossing it. He was disqualified and ejected from the race. Francesco Casagrande punched someone in the 1999 Giro to cap the ejection of Pantani (unfit to race) and Simoni (cocaine). Or maybe it was 2002, and Garzelli and Simoni got ejected? Anyway one time Casagrande puched a fellow cyclist and was ejected.linnega2007-05-29 04:42:29
  5. There has been plenty done in the past. There were all sorts of misdemeanours before TV watched every moment of the Grand Tours. Nails and glass on the road was common - even leading to disqualification of the TDF winner one year. More recently, Eddy Merckx was punched in the stomach by a spectator. An Ullrich fan pulled Mayo and Armstrong down in 2003 on Luz Ardiden (okay maybe that wasn't intentional). Every couple of years there used to be a Basque demonstration that brought the early part of a stage of the Tour or Vuelta to a standstill. Of course, there was the Alpe d'Huez incident where Guerrini was attacked by a gendarme with a camera.
  6. Great stage today. Ricco gets his first big victory, Simoni was in a great position but it seems he is past his best. With two teammates up the road he had a great opportunity to put big time into Di Luca, but Killer is looking like the Maglia Rosa. Fantastic effort by Eddy Mazzoleni, using Savoldelli's downhill skills to lauch him onto the attack. He put big time into Di Luca, and he may have another chance on Wednesday. Schleck faltered for the first time today. He held onto his white jersey, but that may be under threat on Wednesday. The final sprint was something to behold. I would liked to have seen Di Luca and Simoni trying to battle out a sprint at the top on the 15% gradient.
  7. tee-hee
  8. I have had no problems with the Saris Bones. Have regularly taken 3 bikes on trips up to 9 hours long (through the Transkei). Can fit my wife's Boulder, my Anthem and my TCR without any problems. Just check which model is best for you car. The Saris website has a model compatibility checker.
  9. It is sad that this attitude exists even in the cycling community. The fact that roads are not safe for cyclists should not be the responsibility of cyclists. A man (or woman) on a bike is a vehicle like any other and has the right to the lane - any part of it. Lead cars are used by groups to protect cyclists from impatient motorists that do not give sufficient space for cyclists. Cyclists are not allowed to ride inside the yellow line any more than cars are, but the safety benefits are obvious in a country where motorists do not understand basic road regulations. I wonder how many of you are bicycle commuters?
  10. So the legislation is new and as yet not in effect. So Octall you can wait until the legislation becomes effective. The second point to note is that the intention of the legislation is to protect the consumer. So provided the consumer is informed at the time of sale (in the terms and conditions or through a guarantee) that the goods are not being bought through the authorised distributor and that the distributor is therefore not compelled to provide any warranty on the product, there should be no issue. You will see it is the same with HiFi Corp. Their guarantee is internal and does not involve the local distributor. Seems J&J is simply trying to bully the little guy with inappropriate legal threats. If you get another threat Octall, perhaps you could open a case of harassment. Check the wording too, there may be an element of anti-competitive behaviour.
  11. Sounds like standard retail to me. Your LBS is not your local Pick 'n Pay and cannot afford to only add a few percent to the cost. Low stock turns mean that prices have to be higher for them to make a profit. They are not a charity and you may have noticed not many (if any) make bundles of money. For a shop like most local bike shops I would expect the retail price to be in the region of 100 to 150% higher than cost ie a margin of between 50 and 65%. Would it make you feel better if you knew that Edgars' average margin on their apparel is over 50% (ie selling price is at least double the cost price)? And their stock turn is close to 10 times per year. Your LBS will turn its stock at between 2 and 3 times unless they keep really low stock levels. The reason you can buy a complete bike with cheaper components is because manufacturers have an OEM cost price that is significantly lower than the retail cost. This has nothing to do with the our local wholesalers or the retailers as it is governed by the manufacturers.
  12. That looks like something I would write (I didn't by the way). Who published it as I have a few long letters that are similar but were not considered for publication because they were too long, so I have resorted to detailing specific incidents in the newspapers (both here in Durban and one in East London).
  13. Come on Popeye - speak the truth - Mr Price Sport sell the 725i for R2989.99!
  14. He hasn't actually said anything at his hearing yet, but I bet he's thinking that Lemond has hung him out to dry and is going to make sure his best mate goes to jail.
  15. Probike (Raleigh,Ritchey and others) and Dragons (Giant) seem to have gotten there business models right. From the outside they appear to be professional, well organised companies. Service levels are generally excellent and retailers (and hence consumers) get a benefit from dealing directly through them rather than through online companies. If they can get it right, then there is no reason why others (J&J is a great example) should be useless both in price and in terms of service. I agree with ChrisH though. The wholesalers really need to take more responsibility for their product. More innovative marketing (foreign ads stuck into local rags is not innovative), better support of the local expo's (which the closest we have to trade fairs) and improved timing on obtaining the latest products as they are released (Dragons is one that falls short in this area generally).
  16. Would definitely recommend the Anthem. I built mine up with X9,Raceface and Avid Juicy7. The only complaint I have is the clearance of the pedals. Compared to the GT I had before, I am about an inch closer to the ground. Makes it really tough to pedal through between rocky sections. I don't think it is as much of an issue on the smaller frame sizes (with the 172.5 cranks). As for shopping around there is not much point when it comes to Giant's. Most places will sell at more or less retail. Best bets in Durban are Greg's (Cyclesphere), Leigh's or BringItOn. All deal with Dragon's so the backup will be first class.
  17. Only one way out of that association. All cheating riders get caught, hung, dried and quartered. Only the riders can make amends.
  18. I am still wondering why Valverde has managed to get away with much the same level of circumstantial evidence? Is he above the scrutiny of the public and the UCI affiliates? Agree with most of you though. Basso's response to getting caught has been nothing short of a disgrace. Rather hide yourself away and make no comment than continue to lie about what cannot be proven conclusively, and admit to what has already been determined. One step better than LA who lies about the latter as well, but a cheat and a liar remains a cheat and a liar.
  19. Thats where I'll be watching it. Get a decent internet connection (unshaped) either ADSL, 3G or iBurst. Pay your 25 quid annual fee to cycling.tv and watch live streaming big-screen TV in the comfort of your study without disturbing the rest of the family. Commentary is also better on cyling.tv - Phil and Paul very seldom make the grade.
  20. Maybe in May you will see me a bit more. There are a few KZN hubbers but certainly far too many from Cape Town
