  1. True story. |Happy ending are becoming rarer by the week
  2. I hope the old faht managed to fix his nose and get his spectacle prescription strengthened after walking into a glass door at the geriatric centre clearly visible to everyone else. Then he wanted to sue them for his stupidity. haha, Classic BigH.

    Epic 2015 entry

Ok, from a rider's perspective you would recommend the program. It appears as if Vermaak and Co have successfully contrived to butter their bread on both sides. They tap into the psyche of eager would-be riders (like Gluvs) to fork out a "volunteer fee" and other incidentals in return for a guaranteed place. Maximum profit, minimal costs. No disrespect to Gluvs, but your sister epitomises the true spirit of a volunteer.

Gluvs, did the end (guaranteed entry) justify the means (>4k costs and rider crap) for you? Do you think the Epic volunteer programme is worthwhile and would you recommend it to those who don't intend to ride it? Did you use make use of the guaranteed entry to participate in 2009?

No offence taken .... I just copied and pasted the Epic schmaltz directly from their website. Agreed, it's bollocks.
  6. Precisely, the handicap remains the same. Took me 94 seconds from mid-batch in D to cross the start on Saturday.

I'm just copying and pasting the answers to your questions from the info on the Epic website Bud. I won't be volunteering either

http://www.cape-epic...s/volunteer-faq 5) Why do you charge volunteers to join your Volunteer Programme? We charge first time volunteers with whom we have never worked before as a measure of their commitment to the Absa Cape Epic and volunteer programme. Many of our volunteers are invited to return year after year because each year is an experience of a lifetime. In these instances their volunteer fee is subsidised and they pay a reduced fee which covers their stay in the race village (i.e. the same catering and tented accommodation which is the same as the riders receive). 7) What can I expect as a volunteer? As a volunteer, you are part of an enthusiastic team delivering an international event which will be seen by hundreds of thousands of people from around the world — you’ll make new friends, gain new skills, hone existing skills and support both world class and amateur athletes. Don’t miss the experience of a lifetime! 8) What responsibilities would I have as a volunteer? As a volunteer your responsibility would be to assist the organisers/team leaders with the smooth running and execution of various volunteer roles. Often volunteers wake early in the morning, work during the day and would then have the evenings free to relax and enjoy the race village lifestyle (exact times are role dependent). Whilst the hours may be long, the satisfaction and reward of seeing the riders make it to the finish line each day is tremendous. 9) What volunteer role might I be assigned? Volunteer roles vary and are generally allocated based on where a need exists. Typically, roles are filled in the areas listed below; however, should you feel you have specific skills or experience in other areas please feel free to contact our volunteer coordinator. Water points Race nutrition service Woolworths Recovery Zone Race timing assistance (in the field) Pro Tech Support Zone

Seems legit. Easy enough to verify. http://www.cape-epic...s/why-volunteer Want a Guaranteed Entry? Successfully completing the volunteer programme guarantees each volunteer an entry into the following year’s race. Volunteers do not have to use this entry for themselves, and may pass the entry onto whomever they choose, as long as the nomination is done before the closing date of the lottery. This is a reserved entry not a free entry, and must be used for the following year's race.
  10. No luck whatsoever, especially with lightweight carbon fibre 8kg machines unfortunately. I unashamedly roll over these lights, irrespective of time of day, when there are no vehicles behind me to activate them.
  11. Yes, no "pressure", but still a device unable to be activated by a cyclist. Take a ride down Helgarda Avenue in Hout Bay sometime.
  12. Gun to mat, always. No different to a PPA ride or any other timed event. Fixed There's always a debate about this, unfathomably. The first mat merely registers your participation and seeding group.
  13. No worries Rats, you haven't tagged us on FB yet though
  14. Fixed
  15. A cynic and a realist. In a few sentences you've captured the essence of life in South Africa. Sad really.
  16. Reminds of of the old Jummy Buffet Song: 'If you like Pina-RELLOS, and getting caught in the rain If you're not into yoga, if you have half a brain If you like making love at midnight in the dunes on the Cape I'm the love that you've looked for, RIDE to me and escape'
  17. Keep left Pass right Hold your line Stay safe Enjoy the race.
  18. Tell me you wouldn't go out of your way to fix her puncture and see her.......... SMILE
  19. I have a puncture and I don't want to ruin my nails.
  20. I use a cellphone for that purpose, and the camera helps for post-puncture selfies
  21. I hear you Rouxtjie, no good deed goes unpunished. Rather a hundred rondelas out of your pocket than the possibility of hearing on the news that a noob cyclist was robbed, raped and even murdered whilst waiting for someone to assist her with a puncture. You're paying it forward, 100 bucks well spent. A good night's rest and a clear conscience is priceless.
  22. I'd rather chew broken glass. I choose to continue rolling through red lights when it's safe to do, despite (and perhaps even because of) the sanctimonious hypocritical gits here that walk on water, and then, somehow, miraculously even turn it into wine for good measure. I'm a badass like that bud.
  23. Locals and foreigners alike all pay their pound of flesh toward Zumpty Dumty's cattle kraal, he doesn't discriminate. A good friend recently sent me the new Galaxy S5, from Italy, as a gift. She paid ALL the taxes, duties and fees, amounting to a whopping R3200. No good deed goes unpunished.
  24. So many Mother Theresa's in this world thread. Forgive me folks, I have sinned, and I don't intend to change my errant ways.
  25. Most do Milky, it's the "reasonable" approach. They just don't admit to it in order to remain virtually pure. Utter drivel, they're the first to roll through the very robots they swear blindly they stop and wait at (whilst a mugger bears down at them at 4am in the morning).
