You could do it on a road bike with wide tires, or Gravel or MTB or Eversions of them; each have their benefits and drawbacks. All depends on what you feel like riding. There are no challenges on the course any more excepts some corrugations and some loose stones.

That is going to be such a memorable trip. Damn, if I could I would have loved to join you for a bit. But I am a bit of a blob at the moment and these days are a bit of work. Note: Botrivier - Napier is a biiiig one. Expect to be fighting the South Easter headwind all the way. Typically it is less windy in the AM and tends to blow a gail in the afternoon. But if it is not blowing, it will be awesome. Napier - Breede - Witsand and Witsand - Stilbaai - Mossel Bay is also into a headwind most of the afternoon, but it gets better the further SW you go and the winds tend to be more from the SW. Thereafter you are running with the wind at your back.................... well so they say. I always think there is a headwind haha. Have a blast and keep us posted.

But this year is social for Chris. He rode up to the start from Cape Town with 2 mates in 4 days. So the legs should be warm now.... Not.

I see there are a few people riding to the start these days from Cape Town and the number seems to be growing. I think one or two contenders are also riding the up leg again this year.

Never seen the need for more than 2 x 750ml for most events. 2 x 750ml should do 100km with no issues even in 30+deg. But to each their own. When I did Looong unsupported rides I just added a 3rd bottle cage and that did the job through the karoo in summer.

Strange, I think this is a bit of a strange way to look at a bike. What the hell does the year matter? I did the 361 this year and got 830km out of a brand new drive train, What good is the year model now? You are talking about the frame year model. Erm this is the thing that gets the least wear and tear. I would be more interested in the state of the drive train and the fork and shock. To be honest a bike is the sum of its parts. The age of the frame is of no consequence at all. Donder the mind boggels....

Donder...... at R 220k I am way out of ever getting a new bike. Would anyone ever ride that offroad or in the mud as they were originally meant to be ridden.? I think not so much....

I beg to differ. I was 85kg and now I am 115kg. Mu stock standard Momsen with ZTR Crest is still doing excellent service. However the rear rim is taking a bit of strain. They do have and 85kg weight limit you know. So all said and done an entry level bike with standard components will be just fine for the OP's intended application. The entry level bikes have more robust components in any case. Well that is just my 10Cents.

Do you really need that much water on a 50km/1000m ride? Yes it is hot and humid, but still. If you really need more water attach a bottle cage to the underside of the downtube with tape or tie downs. That will give you the amount of water you need. Put insulation tape on the frame where you are going to be attaching the bottle cage and then lock it in with your choice of fastening material. I have used insulation tape to good effect on multi day rides. You don't need to spend big ZARS unless you are one of the image brigades.

Rear brakes should not be use so hard. Lay off the power and you don't have to do anything. Use the front brakes as you are supposed to.

Rgwn you go ride in the Taankwa in summer and you get a porridge wheel.
