  1. I am still amazed you all survived the weekend
  2. At least I won't be opposite you "guys" in the dorm this time.
  3. Down the road from me:)
  4. GPS navigation is not hard at all. My wife and I did Joberg2C without any issues.
  5. Be friendly to your neighbours. They have horns and are faster than my SS bike Spotted 100m from my house on my commute home yesterday. I live in a golf/nature reserve estate.
  6. I went straight to swim in the sea. Ex - Durbanite needs his taste of salt water to recharge the batteries.
  7. When I did the bike commuting/gautrain trip vs drive my car to work sums its was cheaper to leave my car at home and go by bike. My car costs only got re-imbursed at about 50% of actual plus the R30 etolls was for my account. I was fitter, saved money and delayed the replacement of my car by 6 months for each year of bike commuting.

I had small branches getting stuck through those cut outs in the jockey wheel during a race in Botswana and jamming the jockey wheel. Net result was the rear derailer was ripped off and into my spokes. My chainstay was gouged as well. It was a long way home - 80kms singlespeed with a warped rear wheel.
  9. We had not being home for more than 5 minutes before my daughter's boyfriend laid claim to my branded carbon.
  10. We have now done 2 joberg2C races. Both have been near perfect from weather, health, mechanicals and no crashes point of view. The attention to detail throughout the event , the local community involvement, the intimate involvement of the organisers and their spouses, the attitude of our fellow riders and the "Route is King" approach make this one of the highlight events in our cycling experiences. I am really happy/proud that there are more overseas riders taking part and experiencing some of the lesser travelled parts of our country.
  11. Similar traiining effort and matches when I played baseball and softball. This training regime was part of my life for over 20 years. So now even training for stage races is a third of that time and effort. Army basics in the 70's was an absolute breeze for me. It was like a holiday camp.
  12. I have ridden with him on many occasions. He is a real live monster on the bike.
  13. When we first arrived here in witbank 29ers were a rarity . Then one guy bought one and as it happens with a new bike he was suddenly beating everyone. So over a year everyone bought 29ers and had their turn of being the fastest. Recently someone bought a carbon 29er and so the upgrade war continues. Interestingly enough the strava king of this area was until recently riding a 26er SS with v -brakes
  14. I am not doing Sani2C but have not been near my bike since Saturday. We will start riding again this coming weekend. My next race is the Kalchal in Botswana in mid June.
  15. We had some really cold starts at Joberg2C. I only added a windjammer to my normal clothing of short finger gloves, uv sleeves , cycling shirt and lycra shorts. Within an hour the windjammewr was in my back pocket although there was always an option to leave it at 1st watering point for collection at next race village. My fingers did get very cold and maybe I should have worn long finger gloves at the start as well. One can buy those cotton gloves that the runners wear for about R10/pair.
  16. I am a mixed breed as well. Scottish, Afrikaner, French and Lebanese grandparents. Brought up in english speaking home in Durban.
  17. I am a mixed breed as well. Scottish, Afrikaner, French and Lebanese grandparents. Brought up in english speakibg home in Durban.
  18. All packed. Leaving for Johannesburg at lunchtime
  19. I don't have a domestic so to make my life easy I have ten pairs of plain black socks. Easy to match and no orphans.
  20. Same experiences as you but I would not go back to do Epic again whereas I am going to do Jhb2C in a few weeks time. Reason for giving Epic a miss is twofold. 1. Many other stage races to do - last time I counted over 60 on our calender. 2. Epic route/organisation is not aimed at making an enjoyable experience but rather a very tough one. I am past the point in my life where I need to pay excessive cash to "prove" my mettle.
  21. I knew that the Hubber sleuths would be able to help
  22. Yes. 6 bikes in a double garage with camping equipment , washing machine, two cars and other stuff:)
  23. I remember seeing somewhere that there was a lifting system that was mounted on wall. Then thule bike rack was connected so that bike rack could be used as a bike storage But I cannot find it on Google or Hub.
  24. The demin bag rolled up to size of a lightweight sleeping bag and weighed about 2,5kgs. It fitted easily into a backpack. Eventually I bought a 2nd cheap SS and two D locks from Chain Reaction Cycles. Then I had a bike at either end of my commute and no hassle with bags and carrying bike on the train. It did take a little extra effort at the work end of my train journey to ensure that bike never spent the weekend locked up at the station. I did the locking of bikes at the stations for over 6 months without any hassles
