  1. I trashed my drivetrain during three mudfests and in hindsight they were not fun, enjoyable days out on my bike. As I am meant to be a "fun" rider I now avoid races that have a history of being mud wrestling events.
  2. We have had 2 Superlights since 2007. Very happy with them. Done everything from XCO to stage races
  3. I can't remember the exact details of the story of a man who tried to rob a gunshop in American. The autopsy medics extracted bullets from more than 16 differents guns from the man's body.
  4. It's also clear to me now that I don't make the decisions at home. While I have the prescribed minimum of 3 bikes , my wife has 5 bikes.
  5. We have converted a momsen LA329 into a SS but the tensioner that we have does not have enough movement to hold the tension on the chain. ie we can't move it down enough so chain runs under guide nor will it go up enough so chain runs over guide. Am I missing something obvious or will another (which one?) tensioner solve my problem?
  6. I have had my Vida 1 (in a SS conversion) for two months. It was a good value for money buy, handles well and I like the polished finish. I often ride it in preference to my SC Superlight or SC Tallboy.
  7. Agree but they wear out very quickly in a road riding application
  8. After months of contemplation I have decided on my gear for the race. My grandfather fought in the 2nd boer war - although not at Spionkop - so I thought I would try and wear something that resembles the uniform he would have worn.
  9. Pressure was below 2 bar - I weigh about 76kgs - but grip in corners was never their strong point anyway.
  10. Bought 2 x titanium road bikes 1 x single speed bike 2 x mtb frames 4 x bike lights Total of seven different sellers. No problems
  11. They are fantastic tyres for dry hardpack. But I have also used them on the old style epic and a wet Sabie Experience without killing myself The grip is not bad under the right conditions but they wear out quite fast. I dont use them anymore as I now prefer having extra grip during cornering. Maybe that is my age showing.
  12. He was in my start chute. It looked like a Merida 29er hardtail
  13. Started when I was 40. 1st bike was a Giant hybrid. 14 years and 11 bikes later I am still enjoying my choice of sport.
  14. My beer drinking capacity ( mostly lack thereof) had me struggling to maintain forward momentum on that long climb after the 1st beer stop. I had to engage the walk-with-head-on-handlebars gear to get up it. It was my 1st time at Thaba and it was as challenging as I thought it would be.
  15. Not strictly accurate. I did West Rand/Sandton bike commute during rush hour for nearly 18 months without mishap caused by motorists. I did , however, unseat myself a few times through lack of talent.
  16. I have ridden mine (in SS setup) three times - 65km rolling gravel roads ( with 6km 5% climb), 32 km twisty single track with some steep, loose surface climbs and 70kms at Cullinan race. I have no criticisms of the ride or the handling. Although the true test of handling will come on Saturday after a few of Wendall's beer shortcuts Good value for money package.
  17. I have 33/18 and will engage the "walk" ratio whenever necessary. BTW : Wendall had an off at Mankele on Saturday and dislocated his good shoulder. He seemed to be in good spirits when I spoke to him afterwards
  18. You can collect your number in the morning at race venue
  19. Currently 1,73cm and 76kgs - medium build. Used to be 85kgs ( 6 % body fat) when I was still playing softball but I stopped all the weight training as those muscles were useless for cycling.
  20. My 1st race on my new 29er ss. I did the 70km but rode without any watch/gps so think my time was about 4hours. A change in mindset is required for the flat sections as I can't stay with the geared bikes.
  21. 70 km - start group C - Silver Silverback SS with white chain - White/green/black top with red "Ride"
  22. Nothing can make me slower than I already am
  23. As a non beer drinker any route is tough for me after the 1st beer shortcut. Although they then get very easy after the 4th beer.
  24. Burry has the South African agency for Rotor Rings
  25. My 29erSS has 33-18. Done 2 rides on it so far. Seems a decent ratio for normal climbs. Previous 26er SS had 32-16. I could get up most of Breedts Nek on it.
