  1. Theo Lane stated in the interview that an aerial inspection revealed that the catchment nets were damaged. Edit: syntax
  2. I heard the same interview. What surprised me was that Theo Lane said they had viewed Chapman's Peak from the helicopter. He stated that they could see that the catchment nets were damaged, but that a on the scene inspection was necessary to determine the degree. In the next breath he stated that Chappies was safe for use. I wondered at the contradiction.
  3. The support on the day has always been phenomenal: families braaing, music blasting, etc. Hopefully the same numbers of spectators will come out for the shortened route, Imagine the entire route with jam-packed, wall-to-wall support. I think that would be a brilliant experience that is unlikely to be repeated again. It would be a good day out irrespective of the distance.
  4. I think the greatest concern would be whether or not the fires are under control/extinguished by Sunday - its a question of smoke inhalation for cyclists and access to flash points by emergency services. The latest and greatest threat at the moment would probably be the Cape Point fire.
  5. I am really failing to see the disrespect. If the planned route is unsafe or would in any way hamper the emergency services, reroute the ride if possible. If its safe, keep the route as is - we need to acknowledge what has happened and what has been done by so many to protect life, limb and property. It will not be the expected beauty, but one might have a sense of being part of something bigger. It might just be the ride that stands out for many when they recall all the rides they have done.
  6. I like this idea. I would love to ride on Sunday in a jersey like this. Sell it at the Expo and I will buy a few.
  7. In previous years, the erection of scaffolding for television camera's, spectator stands, etc. started on the preceding Wednesday/Thursday. As Slowbee says, the fencing material were on site by Friday and erected late on Saturday, together with the placing of hay bales on dangerous corners such as in Sea Point. Toilets are on site on Friday.
  8. We didn't. All the way back to the foreshore on the M3.
  9. I recall that 3 cyclists died that year. One of them lay on the island between the M3 lanes just before UCT where SAPS had erected saw horses across the road to stop participants. The organisers had run out of water on Ou Kaapseweg as the earlier riders had used the water to cool themselves down.
  10. A heads up to cyclists using MAIN ROAD, HOUT BAY. I received a notification this morning from the Hout Bay Neighbourhood Watch. On Sunday 11 Jan at 11:00 a cyclist was robbed of his bike, cell phone and garmin by seven knife wielding youths (about 20 years old). The incident occurred near DARG opposite the informal settlement. The attackers tried to stab the cyclist as some of them were recognised. The notice said that the bike and garmin have been recovered, but nothing is said as to whether or not the perpetrators have been apprehended. There is a lot of traffic at that time of the day.
  11. RIP
  12. Yeah, when it's not wet it's windy and the mountain spoils the view.
  13. heard this on a bus while traveling down the Champs Élysées last week. Pretty cool.
  14. How can you tell?
  15. That is a very broad brush you are wielding there.
  16. Lets see what Darryl does now. I'm sure there will be a press release at least.
  17. There is a very large police station not 1km from this spot manned by the worst kind of retards who spend their time in the shebeens across the road. People in IY township are being gunned down not 500 metres from the front door of this glorious institution while the idiots we arm wolf down KFC steetwise 25s.
  18. There have also been two attacks on solo runners in the last week at the same spot. In the first instant the runner was attacked by 6 assailants at 15h30 in full view of road users. It appears that the purpose of the attack was assault, not theft. The idiots in blue could not give two flying f**ks. I am tempted to lay a criminal charge against the Hout Bay station commander for aiding and abetting criminal acts.

    Eina

He's one tough kid judging by the photos. I might not have been so calm about the situation as he appears.
  20. If you are after a French classic, have you considered Laguiole?
  21. I can't really comment on that, other than to say that I normally wear a size 44 and the 44 Suplest is a good fit for me. I also have larger size Shimanos (also carbon), but the fit is a bit too loose.
