  1. I see their stuff is specced on a few Signal bikes but Id be curious to know if spares are available in SA.
  2. When I was a teenager one of my buddies bought an Okuma with full STX groupset. I think even the headset which is a place most bike companies skimp. That bike was pretty sweet and definitely not a Game/Makro bike. Think this was around 1996.
  3. Based on how much seat post you have exposed I would say the bike is too big for you and you sell to me. Seriously though unless you find a collector or person who will appreciate it for what it is you are not gonna get much. If you dont need the money I would definitely keep it. 90's Konas will always be timeless classics.
  4. Haha to be honest there was. I have done this to 2 bikes in the past and it wasn't a problem but they had round tubes. The Roscoe is very flat on the top tube and was a bit of a issue.
  5. First ride on the trail. Looks so good with a bit of sunlight on it.
  6. Its called Duram Durastrip. I got it at builders. I have also used one from Alcolin in the past. Both worked well. You have to be very careful with this stuff. A tiny spot on your skin burns like crazy.
  7. Thanks for the kind words guys. In total it was about 16 hours. This included 2 hours messing around with the internal routing for the gear cable. I hope there is a special place reserved in hell for the Trek engineer who designed this system. No plans to clear coat. I have done this to 2 bikes in the past and it needs less maintenance than you would think. Maybe half and hour to polish it every 6 months or so. I have done some reading and it seems there are 2 problems with clear coating: 1 - Because you cant use a primer and the surface is so smooth it difficult to get it to stick properly without it flaking off at a later stage. 2 - If you chip the clear coat you get oxidation starting at that point which can then spread underneath the clear coat. It starts spreading in thin vein like "worms". If there happens there is nothing you can do besides stripping it and starting again.
  8. I've had my Trek for a little over 3 years now and the paint has stated to look very grubby. Lots of scrapes through to the metal and in general it was just looking very tired. I have always loved polished aluminium bikes and thought now was the time to give my Roscoe this treatment. Below is a overview of the process from start to finish. Obligatory before picture: Because I wanted to polish the frame I didnt want to sand the paint off or have it sand blasted. Instead I opted to use a chemical paint stripper with brass pot scourer and brush to remove the paint. I did a small test on the bottom of the BB to check that the stripper would do its job. Next I had to disassemble the bike and start stripping the paint. After a few hours I was left with this: Unfortunately I didnt get any pics of the next few steps. After removing the paint I started wet sanding with 800 grit sand paper and finished off with 1200 grit. Then came polishing with a product called Autosol and finally I applied some fresh decals. And finally some pics of the complete bike:
  9. You need a new headset, or at least the lower parts. All Roscoe's use the same frame as far as I am aware and all use tapered forks other than the 6.
  10. Some sent this ad to me the other day. Probably a autocorrect error but still damn funny.
  11. I can concur. I have a mule that is 13 years old. Its still perfect with the original bladder. Just had to replace the bite valve a few times.
  12. I would too if we could get it easily. We need more affordable options.
  13. I used to use a reflector bracket. Came on the bike so the cost was free
  14. Depends how much you wanna spend. I have recently had a few mates ask me about getting into the sport. They don't wanna spend alot incase they don't enjoy it. In theses cases a 10 year old 26er for R3k will be way better than a brand new 29er BSO from makro for R3k. You would probably also get most of your money back when you wanna upgrade to a more expensive bike. Regarding the spares issue. The only big one to me is suspension forks. Most older 26ers had straight steerers. You could get away with a 27.5 fork but the straight steerer tubes are harder to get. 26in rims and tyres will be around for a long time still. You might not get the same selection but you will get something.

    Fork socks

Seems like good protection while transporting the bike but as others have said, not ideal due to dust getting trapped inside. This was tried in the 90s.
  16. Give me a pm and I'll give you my number. I ride most weekends, either Saturday or Sunday morning. 15km to 30km but at a super chilled pace.
  17. Will a 29in wheel fit in your current fork? You say you are running 27.5 wheels so I am assuming you have a 27.5 fork. I could be wrong though. There are a few exceptions where guys run 29in forks with 27.5in wheels. If you can fit the bigger wheel in then I dont see a problem.
  18. Anyone got any long term feedback on this groupset.
  19. Anyone have any idea when this will be available in sa? My 10 speed deore chain and cassette are due for replacement and I managed to destroy my rear derailleur this morning. Seems like the perfect time to move to 12spd.
