I have been shopping around for deep section wheels myself and I would opt for the Mavic's in this case. Darkhorse looks good but the hubs don't quite make the grade. The Shimano's seem to be technically good, but I haven't seen them in the flesh so I don't know.

Go for it... Most important would be to ride 2/3 of the distance a week or 2 before race day to know what you are in for and to do some riding in a bunch just to lessen the nerves of riding with tons of people around you.

With the bearings you might as well replace the axle and the seals plus labour..... Prepare for R1800 per wheel.
