  1. Mid January . . . . the sun is shning and the trails are dry.... It's not what you would call "warm" here yet, but dress properly and after the first climb you'll be fine :-) Did a ride today up to the village of Sieste, which is just outside Boltaña and then came back down on Zona Zero route ZZ-18. It's a nice little loop with some beautiful views of the mountains to the north and of Morcat to the south. Parts of the trail that don't get any sun at this time of year were frozen, but not dangerously so. Was nice to get out there and stretch my legs and my lungs - I have some guiding work this week so I need to be up to scratch!
  2. I often have a look on this website to see what's happening with BA equipment around the world. Several flights were diverted around Iranian airspace when this all kicked off. http://thebasource.com/ Is there a similar website for SAA?
  3. Correct. With each potential re-investment, the lump-sum required will be less, the business will have a longer "provable" working history and therefore the overall risk should be less. I don't think things necessarily have to keep getting better though. As long as they tick along at a level that covers the bills plus a bit, then the outstanding loan comes down slowly and, with time, our position gets stronger just by "standing still" (so to speak). The last thing we would want, as you mentioned above, is to get ourselves into a position where we have to borrow expensive money to pay back cheaper money. We've been exceedingly careful with everything we've done so far and we will continue to be so. Selling a kidney or asking the russian mafia for a loan are not on our "to do" lists yet!
  4. In fact, for that very reason, going to the banks to replace an initial "private investment" loan with a more traditional bankers business loan would not be something we would be in a hurry to do unless we had to. If we can find an initial investor(s) who is happy with onging "capital+interest" monthly repayments and does not need their capital lump-sum back in a hurry, we would treat the investment like a medium-term bank loan and keep it going for as long as the investor is happy to do so. Equally, if we find an initial investor who then wants/needs their capital investment back after say 2 years, we would look at re-financing the project with a second private investor to repay the balance of the original investment (which would have decreased thanks to the monthly repayments made in the meantime). In theory, provided we can keep finding private investors, we could do this as many times as necessary to avoid going to the banks - and each time, the amount needed to pay off one investor with another would decrease as the loan capital slowly gets paid off. Lot's of options . . . .
  5. Melted alloy rims. That's some heat.
  6. I'm friends with the daughter of an old school teacher of mine. The teacher, who was recently widowed, is moving into a retirment village in Witbank. She's been told she has to install a prepaid electricity meter in she want's to have electricity connected. If she doesn't go prepaid she can't have electricity - simple as that.

    Who remembers?

We're just back from a trip over to the UK. I have some stuff over there in a friends garage that I stored back in 2008 when I sold up in the UK and moved back to SA . . . . Luckily she doesn't use the garage! Every trip since 2008 - so every few years - I go and sort out a few more bits. This trip I finally threw out around 100 odd brand new (well, used once) VHS video tapes of stages of the Tour de France from 2003, 4, 5, 6, and 7. Never going to watch them (although we do have a video player) and worth nothing at all.
  8. We popped in and spoke to one of the banks before we left Spain on our 10 day trip to the UK. They confirmed what I'd pretty much already guessed - if we can get our business built using private investment, run it succesfully for between 18 months and 2 years and produce a set of accounts showing that everything is going ok - then in principal they should not have a problem re-financing us if we wanted (or needed) to pay back our investors. :-)
  9. We've had a number of MTB Guiding enquiries over Christmas. Visitors that I'll be helping in the New Year. It won't be long before the days start to lengthen noticably and the sun warms up. January and February are normally pretty dry months and most of the trails around Zona Zero are good all year round anyway. I'm looking forward to getting back out there!
  10. We're on the last day of a 10 day trip to the UK. Going to miss my son and our grand daughter when we leave tonight. It has been lovely. Andrea came down with flu between Boxing day and us leaving Spain on the 28th, and I got it the day we arrived here. Thankfully my sons house is warmer than our flat back in Boltana and we managed to keep warm, take meds and get rid of it before it could turn into anything worse. Reading on-line it seems the usual waves of winter Flu are sweeping across Northern Europe. Let's hope that's it now. Our first proper illness in nearly two years. Today we will do some last minute shopping before packing our bags and heading to Gatwick for a 2 hr flight home. Tomorrow is a public holiday in Spain - "Kings Day". The day the three kings arrived with gifts to visit the baby . . . . We will have the day to ourselves, washing clothes and cleaning the flat no doubt, before getting back into normal life - whatever that may be - on Tuesday. We're hoping for good things this year - nothng extravagent, we dont need to win the Lotto, we just want to set up our business, become self sufficient financially and do the stuff we love - hosting and guiding visitors. Fingers crossed! Happy New Year to everyone.......
  11. BOAC stood for "Baggage On Another Continent" at on point . . .
  12. Aircraft damage "minor"
  13. I think the latest is ETOPS 370 now?
  14. No.
  15. Apparently when the Concorde stopped flying, some of its pilots went into depression because flying it was such a buzz.
  16. I guess once you understand the format of the instruction it is easier. Height, speed, direction.
  17. Holy cow we're both sick! We both have flu. Andrea came down with it on Boxing day afternoon and seems to be coming out of it now. Yesterday I was good for nothing. Now at 3am I've just woken with a pumping headache so taken a couple of Anadin Extras. Let's hope today is better. Long time since my body ached this much. The consensus is Andrea picked this up volunteering at the school in Ainsa. No good deed shall go unpunished and all that.
  18. Oh dear. He is in trouble.
  19. Christmas is nearly here again. We do like Christmas! The shortest day of the year has just passed - things can only get better now... I've been helping Ramon the Freindly Farmer to cut and chop firewood for next year (we did this years wood last year) and I've done a few days of winter maintenance work at the campsite while it's closed. It's funny - last year in Spring I worked at the campsite for the first time. I managed about three months before Juan, the Boss (owner) finally drove me nuts and we parted company. I left on "ok'ish" terms but man I was happy to be going. Then last Christmas - about this time of year and having not seen or spoken to him for many months, I dropped him a "Happy Christmas" text. He replied in kind and then in February he asked me if I was available to work there again this year. I popped in to see him and we had a chat - he seemed genuinely pleased to see me and I started back there first week of March to do prep work as the season approached. I worked straight through until mid October, two weeks after the end of season, shutting down and closing up everything. Since then I've been back half a dozen times to do bits and pieces. I was there on Saturday for the day and before I left his daughter - the manager - gave Andrea and I a big hamper full of Wine, Champagne, Baileys, Spicy Sausage, Cheese, Chocolate, Biscuits . . . . So I must be doing something right! Juan and I both wound in our necks a bit, he realised that I don't need to be micro-managed and I realised that he's a bit of a perfectionist... Adapt or die - as the saying goes. Happy Christmas everyone! Bonus.
  20. The Trail Team have built a Jump in the Badlands at the bottom of Zona Zero Route 7.... They share the same approach but the original trail passes just to the left of the jump.
  21. Over the last couple of weeks we've been contacted by a couple of people who want to take a look at our business plan - which is a nice step in the right direction for us! I've updated it, double and triple checked it to make sure that a) it makes sense when you read it, and b) the numbers add up. It's easy when preparing a document like this, because you yourself know the Project and our Story inside out, to take certain things for granted and assume that everyone knows what you're talking about. So proof-reading it is crucial. I'm sure that the finished document is good. Almost time for Christmas now. We didn't win the Spanish National Lottery - it was always going to be a long shot because we didn't buy a ticket - so we're going to push on with making our own way through this...... :-)
  22. And......?
