  1. Your costs will go up because of a stupid CSA organisation that bit off more than it could chew.
  2. in effect, yes. CSA has no jurisdiction over an event that does not wanted to be sanctioned by them. That is PPA's point and a good one. Private event owners do not require CSA for anything. If CSA bans it memebers from participatng in PPA events then thats going to be fun. Good Luck to CSA
  3. 12 years ago I live in Den Haag. There is an indoor skating rink at De Uithof (incuding go-kart track and other activities) where i tried my hand at speed skating. What I remeber most was how much stronger my core was after an skating every other day for 2 months. My cycling improved but I also got heavier from muscle. I used it a lot in the winter months as cross training. And yes those skates are very hard to use! The sport is really big over there. Every cyclist I knew was cross training on the skate rinks
  4. trees are trees and even they run at a loss at Tokai they are likely in the black overall of else they would not be pushing to exit early. Pretty sure Pine can be treated and stored and sold later at a better price. The logging business is all long term. What you lose today you more than make up for in 5 years time
  5. pretty hot and some really interesting creatures. watch out for dengi, nasty illness you get from mosquitoe bites. My colleague in Manilla son had it last year just after the the big storm. Was in hospital for two weeks
  6. Thanks, the first part I knew, the person I did not
  7. Flowta, That information is sort of SANParks confidential. They're not sure when it will happen but 2014 seems to be the year. The challenge is how fast the tree felling can occur + the botanists are timing something. On the AGM and moving forward, it might be pertinent that everyone on the committee reads Edward Di Bono's "6 Thinking hats". If they really want the process to work the tools described in the book will be heavily utilised
  8. Who is Kandui?
  9. +1 Kandui
  10. The top pic is a Coupe, the bottom pic is more like "Yo mothersticker this is a ****up!!"
  11. D, you've been doing an outstanding job. You will have my vote. I've seen the undercurrent brewing for some time. Cobus and I spoke about this all time and he had his hands full keeping the other camp on the same side. The way I see it is there are two options. Let the "new commmittee" stand and I have no doubt that all the posturing of " I have no intention to stand" is just smoke and mirrors to win disciples. See this type of campaign everyday at a very high level of public participation forums that are of national interest. The littlegame at play here is as transparent and insidious as air. We can lt them stand and loose and we will loose because theres has been no display of maturity for over 5years now. What I don't understand is why has none of these individuals volunteered to work for the present committee to get things done? Sounds very much like a if you're not with me you're against me group.
  12. Just reading Omega Man's post quoted by Deon, I get the feeling that some are stary eyed about what it is they think they are going to achieve. I guess the elephant in the room has not been spotted yet. Its a nice to have the NPO Its a nice to have "proper accounting" for donated funds. This is really so the people doing the donating can get their tax exemption letters. its nice to have rule by the people for the people in the interests of the people... BUT all of those nice to haves means diddley squat if the relationship between user group and land manager sours. What is a world class MTB trail and what does it mean to SANParks? Answer truthfully.... - more maintenance - more injuries recorded - higher potential damage to the terrain with no offset (horses take a dump on the trail...) What does the mtb community offer SANParks? Money, revenue from tickets and numbers through the gates. The higher the visitor rate the more they are compensated. SANParks view is more mtbers riding less extreme is a win win. a small faction of MTBers thik Tokai can be a Whistler.... Sadly they're mistaken. Tokai is Tokai. It offers what it has for the last 30 years to mountain bikers - a ride up the mountain and a ride down the mountain. To have a "World Class Mtb Venue" in the middle of a sensitive eco system is already a really big win. To be able to ride it after hours is an extension of privilege that is not allowed anywhere else in the country nor in other parts of the world - the Welsh trails are built on forestry land not inside national parks. Some trails are in municipal woodland areas. I feel very strongly that people need a reality check here before being sold a dummy. We all want a "world class mtb venue in Cape Town but the reality is that we also have the privilege of living a city where you are literally surrounded by National Park. That we have access to these parks is already a massive privilege. Thats not to say we should be complacent about what we have. We just need to recognise where our demands are in the bigger picture. Are we demanding for more when there is nothing more to give? Is our timing smart? Is the infighting showing up the general weakness in the community when we really need to showing that we're strong and tightly bound. Are we sure we want to be led down an unknown path by certain individuals who have in the past willfully built unsanctioned trails and have showed a lack of discipline when that trait above all is needed to keep our relationship with SANParks fruitful..? hmmmmm much to think about we have
  13. PM? They have aired their views behind a nom de plume and expect a PM to get their real names? Wow politics in SA just gets more amusing by the day.
  14. Sorry but that is not in the public interest. Personalities have been shown and this is important in deciding who should form part of a committee representing mountainbikers in Tokai.
  15. cant run a trail from a blog..
  16. I'd like to know who the nom de plumes are in real life if they are being nominated. in the interests of the openess, transparency and general hippiniss of it all
  17. the big issue with the Peninsula funride season is that there is a ride everyweekend over very similar routes. this annoys residents who are inconvenienced every Sunday morning for three months. Personally I can't see that there would be a big objection to one funride every month. One in January, One in February and the ACT. give and take
  18. If the new camera was used then the prosecution range is further away. I'mnot sure what the distance is. I beliee it varies depending on where the camera is set up as the longer range camera's use radar or laser or IR to track. If the area is heavly wooded and its a radar camera then you can contest the fine. the old camera's was 150m those static camera's on poles is 50m IIRC
  19. You seem so sure of yourself. the camera's demonstrated to me at a transport EXpo in 2011 showed camera's for the E-tolling as well as the latest speed camera's. Using filters and some zooty software they can clean up the images just fine to read your license disc quite clearly from over a 1000m away with glare on the windscreen. The e-tolling camera's are quite adequate to take pics of your license disc too. the speed camera are pretty expensive so theres only three of them in the great Johannesburg area, 1in Pretoria, A couple in KZn and the Western CApe.. Believe what you like. I have seen the camera's in action. they exist and the e-toll camera's appear to do what they say it can. the challenge they have is managing all the data they are collecting.
  20. Seen the camera do its job. It can definately read your license disc! Some of the spped camera's in use can read your license disc at over a Km while you're moving toward it. Law says they can only prosecute if you are still exceeding the limit when you are within 150m of the camera. But they have you license number from the disc or plates loooooong before then. AS for focusing you heard of laser range finding and auto focus right? You heard of fixed focus high resolution cameras?
  21. DID I MISS SOMETHING?
  22. can't do that till the police post their pics.
  23. Its not de ja vu.... what makes that very narrow description of a race worthy of being suitable for a carbon frame?
  24. can you provide technical reasoning to your arguement "Steel simply cannot match carbon as a race oriented frame material".
  25. I think you need to go and do the calculations of the variable shape tubes vs round tubes. The major dimension that impacts the structure is the distance from the neutral axis the material is placed. Funny shapes only try to optimise very slightly what is already an impressively stiff and compliant structure that is the bicycle frame. The same can be achieved through round tubes. The Zivko Edge 540 uses round steel tubes, similar to Reynolds 531 for its structure. Yes it was chosen for repairability and longevity of the airframe but it is more than stiff enough to achieve a excess of 12 G LOADING POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE, A 420 degree per second roll rate without the wings falling off of the fuselage falling apart. If steel is good enough for this competition airframe through which massive forces are placed, I think its more than strong enough for a bicycle frame and can be built light enough. Yes Boeing and Lockheed Martin use carbon composites in the airframes, sometimes to reduce weight but mostly in military applications to reduce the radar cross section of an airplane. Weight is also a consideration ie. carbon fibre body panels are lighter than steel body panels since the steel has to be a minimum thickness to ensure the panels does not distort when fasteners are applied. A lot of composites are use in non essential or non structural elements to reduce weight since Carbon main spars are expensive and offer very little weight saving. The F22 uses a carbon main spar but mostly because the design has too allow for internal weapons bays which makes the main spar a complex shape. Producing this in aluminium would be have too time consuming and hence expensive wheres moulding from carbon achieved the weight and strength targets. The humble bicycle has more in common with the smaller aerobatic airplanes. Bicycles are not complex. We're just told they are so we can be suckered into paying more for less The only reason we don't see steel in the pro peleton is because it does not sell bikes. Carbon fibre is "Space age" .
