  1. which is why it is always advisable to obey the laws of the road. there are defensive techniques that may appear to violate the above e.g. where the road is too narrow for a motor vehicle to pass you safely, ride more toward the middle of the road to discourage an overtake, but these should alwaysbe followed by courtesy and a "thanks". Mobbing other road users serves no ones interest.
  2. actually I think he will rather fit in quite well in Scotland. the saying "nothing tighter than a highander" does not refer to anything to do with kilts or whats under them. I suspect he will find mor people receptive to his "i can fix it attitude"
  3. Nice article. He could over coem the weight in the swin arm components through using sheet materials and form it either via Hydro forming or HERF. Cost goes up of course, massively but its a design vs cost challenge, nothing more.
  4. the most mature post i've read to date on the matter of biking vs playing chicken with vehicle heavier than you. You sir, deserve a Bells
  5. All the engine manufacturers are using interestng engine maps to maximise the potential for each cars unique exhaust blown diffuser. where Red Bull have a huge lead on everyone else is in the engine and ancillary equipment packaging. Renault provides a neat install that is more customisable than the Meredes engine and its one of the main reasons the Red BUll designe team has never chased Mercedes engine very hard. It also has benefits in heat rejection that can be exploited for aerodynamic gain and Red BUll does a very good job off managing the air flow to exploit this. Other team shave more resourses but Red Bull and Renault always just seem to have more clever ideas
  6. these days if you want a full 953 or OX, or even 753 or whatever you will have to go the custom route. Even with carbon bikes, the manufacturer will seldom use the T1000 Toray Carbon fibre in the whole frame. Its used mainly in high load areas where wall thickness needs to be kept low. then even will carbon there is even less guarantee that what they said is in the frame is actually there... Despite Carbon's great properties the failure rate on frames is still too high with cracks being common and this is partly due to the unforgiving nature of carbon to structural damage. Aluminium. yeah easier to form than steel but requires mor eenergy to manufacture and process. Sureits light but the grades used for bicycle manufacture have poor fatigue resistance and the designer compensates by making it lighter and stiffer. they then resort to fancy tube shapes to change the vibration pathways tp get some level of comfort back but by and large they fail miserably. So I'll go outon a limb and say that I disagree tht steel has no place in the toplevel racing. I beleive that it does have a place especially for races like Paris Roubaix and other classics. Perhaps the extra half kilo in weight is not ideal for long days in the mountains, but the ride quality and forgiving nature of a steel frame is ideally suited to longer flatter stages. I also don't believe the weight give away is a significant part of the total mass to be propelled. Steel frames have competed favouraly against carbon frame in past TDF e.g. 1990 where Miguel Indurain rode a Steel Pinarello Prince againsts LeMond on a TechnoVitesseTubi TVT (Now Time). The frame material is not the most important aspect of a race frame design.
  7. This is not a new practice and harks but to the days when "steel was real". Many 853 bikes had 501 or 531 rear triangles and many True Temper and Columbus frmaes used straight gauge rear stays (Chain and seat)
  8. How are aluminium and carbon fibre "better"? is this the lighter stiffer arguement again?
  9. what that video shows is a group of thugs on motorbike intimidating a driver and his family. The driver reacts in a manner to defend himself and his family. In no contest, in a angry hord of 100 aggressors in the right when the fight is against a woman, her child and her husband. No matter which way to the bikers want to spin this one, its an uneven contest and paints motorcyclists with the "thug" stereotype. Twirst and twirl all you want, the video shows exactly that. All it will do is provoke more anti biker sentiment.
  10. Critising bikers behaving badly does not = anti bike/biker. YOu may want to reconsider your position since it does not do wonders for perception of your maturity level. PS: you may want to read the above a few times to fully grasp whats being said
  11. I don't think he's leaving the hub rather he's leaving Yellow Saddles and SA. Good Luck in Scotland Johan. Its a beautiful place. If you can settle on the Isle of SKye you won't be sorry. And for this tip all'i'll ask for is a bottle of Talisker every year on my birthday
  12. I've seen this many times with bikers. They do it to intimidate you to slow down and give them the road. Somehow they feel its their god given right to take over the tarma c they are on when they are having a "run". Normally sensible people turn into brainless thugs once they have an engine between their legs.
  13. work of art! give this man all the support you can. He's earning it. Love the product. wonder if I can get an old Argon 18 refurbished and modernised?
  14. when people hide behind masks/helmet visors then their true nature emerges.
  15. You really have to start realising that no one is perfect and mistakes creep in no matter how professional an outfit.

There is a lot of speculation that the foils were automated but it cannot be proven because the measurements committee passed the system. ETNZ trusted that ruling but I suspect that was more do to with not wanting to damage the reputation of the event further.
  17. The Lotus chassis is not a bad package. Its proven itself to be excellent in fact, hence it is often carrying the Renault right there with the Red Bull. Where Lotus struggle is mid season development. They don't have the cash flow to keep up with Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes and McLaren. They need a backer willing to pay the big bucks needed. AS for Newey designed cars being so great: it true to a limited context in that Mr Newey does a great job of working with his engineers to have the most integrated package on the grid. But it is also worth noting that never in his history in F1 has he had the level of domination that he has enjoyed with Sebastian Vettel. In 1988 through 90 he designed really slippery cars for Leyton House March. Then he moved to Williams Renault and gave Mansell a fantastic car in 91 92, prost in 93 and the 94 car was a bit of a disaster initially but he sorted it out. His worst period while winning was in 1995 to1997 with Hill, Villeneuve and Coulthard. None of those drivers really could get the Newey cars to be dominant, but they still took the champs in those years. In 98 with Hakkinen at McLaren he was back on top, dominantly and a repeat in 99 after Schumacher sat out most of the season. But in 2000 through to 2008 He did not have a team or driver capable of delivering. Its only after the rule change end of 2008 that he got back on top and mostly again with Master Vettel behind the wheel. Save for the year when Hill, Villeneuve and Coulthard drove and the 92 to 93 perios with active suspension automatic cars, His cars were only dominant in the hands of drivers who have been recognised as being exceptional talents. So its not just Newey that should be given credit, its also the driver. F1 is ultimately a team sport. Fans like to break things down to the "Magic bullet" which is generally disingenuous to the way F1 works ultimately. SO as for the Lotus, its probably as very good package overall in comparison to the Red Bull and has the same engine and therefore the same power available. Its proven to be better on the tyres than the other cars which says it better balanced overall. But in the Red Bull, you have a youngster who has proven himself to be the measure of his rivals. Much is made of Alonso but he won both his championship at Renault (formerly Benetton, Then Renault, now Lotus) who have a history of designing brilliant F1 cars using Michelin tyres which were the rubber to have in the mid 2000's. He's a great driver, one of the best but to write off Vettel's achievement to simply "Newey" is not fully understanding the whole picture
  18. I have had some K#k even when collecting online purchases from the Durbanville store. I ordered some Michelin Pro Race tyres and went to collect only to be told I can't collect because it was an online purchase. If I wanted to collect from th store I would have to pay the full retail not the discounted price. I think the look on my face must have made Willemse snr step in and remedy the situation because I got my tyres (already paid for online) and was offered what ever else I wanted at a discount (10% IIRC) I walkd out with a pair of Sidi Mtb shoes too. The Willemse's themselves are focussed on helping their customers but some of their staff treat their role in the store as just a job. Thats where the k#k starts. I have no dog in this fight but the online purchase can be inproved. A stock item is a stock item so if an online purchase needs to be moved to another store it can be done virtually. All depends on how the "Shop" and warehouse stock are managed in the database / ERP system

During the Youtube commentary of one of the races a viewer posted that the Oracle boat appeared so stable it looked as if it was controlled by computer. The next race commentary was disabled.....

I ts much more sad than that. The winning boat was built in New Zealand by an Oracle owned, New Zealand created and based company. Th winning teams CEO is the most successful sailor in the history of the AC, Sir Russell Coutts, A New Zealander. The Mircale turn around came after the New Zealand based designed team flew out a couple of engineering guru's to tweak the automatic foiling system. The wing was repositioned and the foils given forward rake to increase the boats stability. Those were the silver bullets. Money and technology won the day.Only twice in the history of the America's cup has a lesser funded team won it; in 1995 when Sir Peter Blakes Team NewZealands Black Magic trounced Dennis Conner's One America 5-0 and then again in 2000 when New Zealand successfully defend against Italy's Prada Challenge.
  21. Eer the Lotus has the same in the boot as the Red Bull......

yeah and Shosholoza were undone by a few things after 2007. Rand dollar exchange rate, and cost once the 2010 Oracle challenge won and annouced the AC72. Those AC72 are roughly twice the cost of the IACC90. and that excludes the higher maintenance on the wing sail. As foir the 34thAC, its a caseof money wins. I also smell a rat in that that Oracle boat gained over 90 sec on the course in under a week. I suspect there was a 12th crewman called Mr Data
  23. I know of a bloke in Fish Hoek. PM for his details
  24. blind people cant see anything no matter how bright
  25. actually stunning lap times from lap 1. He pulled a second a lap in his first stint, then after teh safety car he pulled on average 2.2 seconds per lap to gain an advantage over Alonso who only stopped once
