  1. Fact is Jack Daniels Old No 7 is a long established trademark. People have often tried to associate themselves with it through use of the font, Lets take one of their brands as an example i.e. Tennesse Honey. Its a registered trade mark but does that prevent anyone else selling Tennessee Honey corn pudding? Clarly not since there are plenty of Tennessee Honey corn pudding recipes on the web and one can buy it at any supermarket in Tenessee... I could understand if Specialised took exception to someone naming their shop Specialized Bike Shop with a logo that has similar SS styled esses (funny how the big S litigation behaviour is akin to the behaviour of a certain WWII Nazi Germany specialist group.....) but taking on a small single bike shop for the use of the name "Roubaix" is absurd for all the reasons given in the "ridingagainstthegrain blogspot article. I hope the bike shop owner goes to court and wins.
  2. I'm not buying into that at all. As has been shown in other posts the "Roubaix" name is widely used in the cycling industry. No other manufacturer has taken on a competitor or other industry player in the same manner because they have applied reasonable or justifiable cause. Specialised appears to just be targeting someone without doing that. Claiming that they need to protect the trademark is rubbish since it has been in widespread use long before they adopted it for a bike
  3. LBS has the option to stop selling the their product. You either stand up to a tyrant or you live with it and don't complain
  4. I believe Specialised lost their case
  5. That should not stand up in a court of law. The name Roubaix is not a proprietary name since it existed long before the bike company came into being. This is Specialised after something else. Like maybe the property the Cafe Roubaix is situated in so they can open one of those gharstly concept stores
  6. They stole it. They were given the design to use in a frame design and then patented it. They sued former employees for starting a bike company. They have sued any company for coming up with designs that even remotely resembles a horse link (name intentionally change to avoid patent infringement)
  7. How can Roubaix be a trademark? Perhaps only in North America. The name Rouboaix has existed long before Specialised started selling bikes through Target and Walmart
  8. They also stole the Horst link then patented it and now defend it for all they're worth.
  9. Thanks to SH*t like this I will NEVER buy any Specialized products. I guess Epic Bike Shop would be their next target. Heaven help anyone who can spell Specialised correctly.. **** bike anyway Over hyped corporate trinket
  10. The only issue with your thinking is that the motorist will likely have witnesses that state he/she was driving like a saint. Taxi passengers will lie for fear of intimidation by the drivers and their fare collectors. Don't get me started on those arseholes who drive Fortuners and can't seem, to see anything darn that thing must have the worst visbility through the glass....
  11. SO you mean "Hold your stripe" and "Slower riders keep left" have no effect??? Who would have thunk it
  12. I had a VanNicolas planned that was very similar. But the factory wasvery hesitant to build it and I eventually dropped the order and bought a LOOK 585 Optimum instead. Nice to see that Mercer bikes is a little more flexible in what they are willing to try
  13. y...a......w......n........
  14. Hmmmm Japanese surgical instruments
  15. Lol there was a stop in Diep River, Cape Town jsut outside the Steurhof train station. General Grocer K.Aklekker and son
  16. of course they won't raise awareness around poor driving. they need to sell petrol after all
  17. better where your helmut for this one
  18. Motorcycle brakes and motor vehicle brakes generate a lot more heat so the water will typically evaporate off before it is absorbed into the fluid. With MTB's there is more opportunity for water ingress and the sealing of MTB brakes pistons is not as good as on cars and Mbikes. V12, perhaps in JHB the water absorption through atmosphere is not an issue but tests I conducted while Alrode lab was still open proved otherwise. Once opened, even with the seal in place the container breathes sufficiently to reduce the reflex boiling point, especially in the coastal areas. Buy small containers, use what you needs and dispose of via the appropriate channel. Take it to Rose Foundation.
  19. Dot Systems typically use silicon seals. Silicon seals are not compatible with Mineral oil. Mineral oil systems typically use urethane, butyl rubber, nitryl rubber or flouronated rubber (VITON ) seals. These are quite hard wearing and typically are compatible with a broad range of materials but the composition porosity or the seals is important to understand. Generally VITON is compatible with both alkylated, alcohol or ether based materials as well as conventional hydrocarbon materials. But again you need to know whats in the brake system from the factory. Follow the manufacturers recommendation and you'll be fine. Theres good reasons why they recommend what they do. If you have a DOT based brake system, after you have opened the container with Dot Brake fluid, use it and dispose of the remaining fluid. It is highly hygroscopic (that means absorbs water) and will degrade in weeks. DoT3, DoT4 and DoT5.1 are compatible. DoT5 is silicon based and is NOT COMPATIBLE with any of the others nor with mineral oil based systems
  20. many many many negative stories about that store. But they have their clientele. Personally I prefer to do my mechanical work myself or take it too Epic Bike SHop or WIlliam's in Somerset west,(55km out of my way) or have Mellie at Bridge do the work. Bowmans would also get my vote The Cloetes down the road would get my money too.
  21. ah but which tyre is that? Try that with a Kenda or Spech and it will rip itself to pieces as the nails tries to destroy your seat stays and the tyre.
  22. I've done a few trips in the Alps and the brakes thatneeded bleeding the most were Hopes. Shimanos only needed a pad change. Push the pistons back, pop in new pads, squeeze squeeze ahhh brakes and go ride. I have a set of Mono Mini Pro on my Xc bike, damn they're crap. I really miss my XTR brakes. Hope has certainly improved their products especially the gravity brakes but Saint seems to be the standard
  23. How do you know someones done the ACE? Ans: they tell you over and over
  24. some people like shiny and others like things that work and work well. The latter chooses Formula or Shimano or Magura. the others like Hope ......cos they gonna need it Hope that is. "I Hope these are going to sto..........crash
  25. I didn't get any sale stuff because anything in mysize was sold already but there' s slotsof nice kit for the ladies, Craft shorts and baggies. Most of the sale struff is on racks on the wall so only the real elcheapo'skates need to sift through the bins on the floor. Picked up a couple of pairs of Louis Garneau roadie gloves for less than the price of a single pair of specialized gloves and they're more comfy. Re the size of the shop., oh well can't please everyone I guess. Bridge has been going long before thehub existed and many of its "intelligencia" knew how to ride a bike. they didn't survive this long in a hostile retail environment because they indiscriminately threw money at expanding the shop when their clientele have been loyal for more than 25years. Cycleflab has come and almost gone, other shops have closed and reappeared under new ownership others have stayed closed, the Bridge has weathered the storms. Ultimately thats far more important.
