  1. Who is riding what this weekend and does anyone need a partner?
  2. I started a 30 day quest that is now turned into a 40 day quest to go from 92 to 85 kg so fat loss is why I am doing it. I lost 2 kg I hope cos it is an up and down scale reading thus far in 14 days and the first week was more like Oktoberfest for me. Also LCHF is supposed to enhance your capability to render energy from fat. My mother runs comrades and this year she did not do any carb intake compared to the previous 9 years and she said that it was her best ever in the way she felt. If there are carbs let it be natural raw carbs rather than refined processed carbs
  3. Stats say this year top nine finishers were Soft tail and 10th was the first hard tail in the Epic. 27.5 was not first but had very good representation in the top 10. I have a hard tail 29r and for a fatty like me I wont say it is not doable but I think there must be something better out there. Also long distance corrugated roads leaves the whole upper body tensed up after 80 km. However I rode behind a guy on a duel suspension this morning. I wander if his shock was flat or not locked out or is this how these bikes behave (on flat tar), the guy looked like he was riding waves on a dingy. Will have to borrow a duel suss before I buy one. I am currently looking at a Cube
  4. It can be argued that it can act as a counter weight for sideways motion. Just joking Anyway this thread topic ends with MTB we rarely sprint down mountains. For those of us not chasing the podium we also do not have sprint finishes.
  5. Now how is this better than a saddle bag???? looks like a patch job. I had one and it did and looked worse.
  6. Ok back from the german Butcher. I got some dry Landjagers for lunch and some wet ones for my long distance ride. While browsing the shelves I came across --Griebenschmalz-- which I can only describe as looking exactly like boere kaiings as I know it. I bought it as it is pure fat and could make a good snack. I have made kaiings before so here is how to do it yourself. 1. Go look for the white soft fat of the sheep or lamb. The tail of a fat Karakul sheep works beutifully. 2. Cut the sheeps tail into tiny little pieces evenly sized less than halg a cm by half a cm. If thre are meaty pieces its OK it adds some taste 3. Place the fat in a pot and from low to higher heat start melting the fat. Eventually you will see some solit pieces swimming in transparent liquid. This process takes long so be patient. Wait for the solids to go brown. 4. Be careful and do not use glass at this stage as it will crack. Separate the solids from the liquid using a metal sieve. 5. Add salt to the solids to taste and maybe have a quick fry in a pan if you want them more crispy. The liquid after cooling a bit you can put in glass jars. If you sieved properly you will have a bright white solid. Both products can be kept in the fridge for a very long time. Before LCHF I used the fat in the jar to fry potatoes. My wife and her Namakwaland family used it as butter on bread with syrup on top... ewwww. It is also not too hard and I am sure will make a good substitution for butter in many recipies. The Kaiings are good as is, in a salad or mixed in green vegies like leeks, green beans or asparagus.
  7. Lost the lid in the first 500m gravel road. I'll rather convert a water bottle than ever trying that junk.
  8. They keep their wifes happy for emergencies or borrow tools from a riding buddy or maybe they keep to the soft tracks. I have not been cycling that long but know that chains, tyres other moving parts do break.
  9. Cool what I realized from my own research is to get in the basics as long as there is heaps of fat and then wing the rest to your taste. Must we use Gerigold or can we use Springbok or Mooiriver butter (unsalted). Is Kerrigold really grass fed. Or are we just being specially nice to the Irish because they helped us in the boer war..lol That stuff is expensive. I am going on a long out ride tomorrow on almost no carbs. I see some okes mentioned this in previous posts. Will buy some mini-salami and or fatty jagwurst from the german butchery. Will try a BP Coffee at the start and some dried berries and almonds that I crushed myself as a snak. What else can anyone recommend.
  10. They refered to them as Queens
  11. Sho had my first fatchake this morning in the cold. Afterwards I could swallow dry cotton without it touching sides or do the sward trick. Maybe because I used a stick blender the butter did not fully dissolve. Maybe I should try the hot version but that would delay me getting on the bike just that much earlier in the morning. I suppose because I had coffee before I had the shake I could rather try the bullet proof coffee and combine my fat and caffeine intake. I have only heard you guys speak of it. Please post the link to the recipe. Will try the search but in this thread that may also take some time.
  12. I do a lot of trail riding and do some Marathon participation for my own pleasure. My hard tail aint cutting it anymore. Except keeping my hard tail for training on the city curbs and the occasional not to technical race I am not a guy that can afford a stable of bicycles. I am gatfol of breaking stuff in marathon rides but enjoy my bike during climbs and flats. What is the solution here. Is enduro bikes really more suited for flattish landscape and gravity riding or can it compete on some hills. Should I buy an XC bike and get it over with.
  13. I am up for suggestions. But I am in for a long ride rather than too much single track. I need to stretch the legs a bit. The pic is a basic route to the west of PTA from my home. It can be chopped and changed but I have heard of some none safe zones in that area and that this basic route is safe. The distance displayed is one way. If you feel up to a 2 km ride up and 2 km back on the R511 we can also ride some dirt roads on the other side. I have done some riding on the east side op PTA as well and we can also plan a ride out that side. It is maybe much more simpler going that side and a greater chance of meating other MTB'rs
  14. I was the same in Metric at 180 cm I hit the scale at 65 kg and I ate abot 12 to 16 slices of bread a day. I sometimes microwaved about two or thee spoons of margarine or even raw shugar on 4 slices white bread at a time. I know LCHF will work for me and that I will have great results in a short space of time. But I wont be piling on the fat in my diet forever but wont cut it back ieither when it presents itself. I have made a permanent carb and sugar adjustment in my life but won't extreme it and will indulge from time to time. I also know that carbs alone are not the enemy. I am not willing to do that experiment but I know from past experience that a combination of carbs sugar and fat builds fat just as fast as an extreme LCHF diet can lose you weight and that carbs alone although not good for one at all does not have the same effect. Obsessive dieting really effects ones social behavior.
  15. Your words can not be more true. I am struggling. Got family over to visit and had to visit little Germany aka Namibia. Try telling those okes no starch. Got rice instead of potatoes, but I just skipped it instead. I feel like I am rather on a high protein diet at the moment with the occasional over starching. I started a blog on blogspot but after 2 days could not keep up. So my 30 day quest is now stretched to 40 days. I must say till now I think I have managed to make a few gains. No cerial or bread for breakfast nor any oats. My staple was easy oats or wheat bix. I have also acquired xyletol and cut the occasional potato to nothing. I will sumarise my past 7 days on my blog and share it soon. My weight this morning is at 90 that is 2 kg down in a week BUT mondays are always a bad scale day as sometimes this normally are due to water loss than anything else. If it is maintained till tomorrow then floook I might start looking for missing limbs. I did rent a bike in Windhoek (expensivish) from DAS bike shop. Verry very interesting shop and vibe. Worth a visit.
  16. Anyone up for a long ride this weekend? By that I mean about 80 to 100 km.
  17. What happens if you just take real fatty biltong and repeat the process. This is the first time I hear of this type of snack. Sometimes you get that biltong piece that has more fat than meat. It seems that someone has to invent a tiny double walled cooler bag/box to use in your pocket. Maybe experiment using tinfoil plastic, tinfoil and another plastic bag as an insulator against body heat. I cant remember if the shiny side goes inside or outside.
  18. I am experimenting with dried berries, nuts, banana and droewors. The gels and sugary sweet stuff gives me stomach cramps on long rides (4 to 5 hours) BTW I am staring a month of extreme low carb-ing and no boozing from tonight onward (Had to finish some perishable fruits for lunch). I have been lesser carb diet for a while and managed to lose 12kg in 3 months. Its now another 3 months down the line and I have stagnated at 92kg / 93kg. My aim is to go from 92kg to 85kg in this month. I will start a full log of activity and food consumed(with recipe) and daily weight results. If it worked I'll share if it does not I'll ask your advice.
  19. Ok, then I'm out. Don't even have a comment on the bike. Can do much more with that kind of cash.
  20. Jip I did Wolwespruit this morning and I liked it. Not just a trail in a mountain but a mountain bike trail. Sections to get the back wheel out, sections to pump the legs and sections to hold onto the handlebar. And what a friendly bunch at the start finish too. So much potential here this will definitely be one of the big ones in the future.
  21. My daughter was born at the Medi Clinic 3 weeks ago and I eyed that area for a few months now. It just seems that where the area use to be open now it is fenced off. I hope they made this a super cool experience as the retain has the potential for one of the best spectator short circuits there is. I might even skip Skanskop. Thank you for the info.
  22. Up and down Fort Skanskop at the Voortrekker Monument. This Saturday Morning. This is quite some climbing, probably the the most for the PTA region. IM me
  23. I investigated this for Android and found that there were one key area to investigate first. That is what kind of connectivity does the device provide for and what kind of sensors do you have. For instance there are normal Bluetooth for which there are not any sensors available, then there are the latest version of Bluetooth (Bluetooth mobile or bluetooth 2.0 or something) which has seen growth in the number of sensors available and is also supported by the latest Android OS and most newer Samsung devices, be carefull bothe the OS and device must support this connectivity. Lastley there is Ant+ which was is still the most widely supported connectivity sensors and iPhone provides for this type of connectivity and also most GPS devices. Choose an app that works from your handset GPS for outside riding and a none app specific sensors. Go see the local hobby shop they know more than most cycle shops about the gadgets. The cycle shops struggle sometimes to differentiate between these things beyond what one can read on the box and price category.
  24. Can meet you at echo park for some MTB
