  1. Completely agree with this. Also worth mentioning the insane work done on 12 Waffles last year too. One of these days we can ride around the mountain with little or no tar ????
  2. Before comparing the added components, the guts of the bike needs to be compared. Ive heard bad news around the Brose motors being fitted to the Levo's, specifically the belts breaking. That said Spez have added an extra 2yrs to the motor warranty on all 2.1 fitted Levo's. It might make sense to first ascertain design and warranty for the bones of the bike before considering brand until e-bikes are more main stream (although some might argue they are already). So do you ride a Bosch, Yamaha or Brose? Your choice, but these these are the most expensive components of an e-bike and really should be at the centre of your selection.
  3. I agree with this, mostly. Suspension servicing and brake bleeding I leave to the pros. These are service items that are really only needed annually and deserve to be done by experienced individuals. There are heaps of diy videos on YouTube that cover basic bike servicing, and are hugely rewarding to undertake if not just to be a little self dependant while out with the bike. GMBN tech is probably the best I could recommend. https://youtube.com/c/gmbntech Back to the OP, I think the topic of bike service quality could expand to almost the entire service industry, it’s just that there is nothing as central as bikehub for any of those other industries. If there was a carhub for Land Rover owners, dininghub for Cape Town restaurant service and even coffeehub for poor coffee we would have as much a centrally based opinion on how bad or inefficient those industries are run too.
  4. Just to qualify, by eco system I include the Kickr and all the IDT products they make.
  5. Apparently SRAM and Thule are collabing to make the first wireless AXS standalone tail light bike rack product, the tail light cluster connects to an OBD-II dongle. ???? Jokes aside the way in which you connect your bike rack light cluster to a car is so primitive, honestly can’t believe the hastle I had to go through to get it working.
  6. Got stung in the right ear too, luckily a Marshall standing nearby had a pocket knife on hand to do open ear-canal stinger surgery, he managed to get most of the sack removed, but the little bit that got in hurt like a mother-trucker ????
  7. I thought the braai pack was quite redeeming though? They literally packed a kitchen and meet for the tram in a box, really well thought out from Food lovers. The bottomless Named Sport HydraFit did wanders, must have smashed 6l of the stuff yesterday. Don’t forget to use the promo code DC2020 for 15% discount off your named sport product purchase. ????
  8. 10hrs in the saddle today, mechanicals, bee stings aside, the 40km headwind from ODT to Montagu felt like 100km, no words to express discomfort i this section. Even the neutral zone was terrible! Turning at the circle at Robertson totally uplifted team spirits, managed to get 8 over the line. Brutal day out!
  9. For cyclists already in the wahoo eco system, this watch will make sense, for the 80% of the community that grew up with garmin, it will still be the defacto.
  10. This saved me after arriving in Bonnievale for DC last night realizing I had pulled all the lugs off the connector while loading the bikes, this worked like a charm to figure out where all 7 inners needed to go ????
  11. This is where im at now too - vehicle upgrade time and looking at the Caravelle or the MB V250. No doubt keeping the bikes in the van, with ample seats and packing is the most "contained" way to go. Ive also seen some really neat conversions inside the van to lock the bikes in place with cannibalised Thule grips.
  12. I still think platform / towbar solutions are the best, something like this with the 4th rail is a really good solution, probably the best IMO: https://bikehub.co.za/classifieds/item/bike-racks/439724/thule-velocompact-4-bike Too many meme's to consider roof racks.
  13. My son and I rode from Melkbos to the Yzerfontein intersection, then to Darling, and onto gravel back linking us to Grotto Bay. I was super anxious about riding this route, but honestly found it to be quite safe, there was a decent shoulder, cars in the area were quite well behaved. I think the situation where a drunk driver is involved could literally mean anything can happen, and certainly anywhere on any road. The backdrop of opening alcohol sales over the weekend, and a shocking statistics of alcohol abuse in South Africa, it makes one really wander why they opened up sales at all.
  14. Nothing says you’re appreciated like kit made by ciovita. My enjoy made kit tends to hang at the back of the cupboard after DC.
  15. I’ve been riding fox shocks for a number of years, specifically the brain variant, and am quite used to seeing oil on the shaft when it’s recently been serviced and up to the time it needs it’s next service in 50/150hr intervals. This particular model also has had auto sag since the 2012 Epic and what’s even more alarming is how much oil rejects at 300psi when you set the sag. In my opinion from that picture the OP has nothing to worry about as long as performance of the shock is acceptable which as pointed out, he doesn’t seem to have set the shock up for travel yet (if that’s the usage of the shock after a ride).
  16. I prefer the route tool on strava (to Garmin Connect) as well as having segments sync to my wahoo. I use elevate too, but chrome plugins mean you need to use your desktop to analyse your fitness, strava makes it easy on mobile. Then there is the training calendar etc if strava could make workouts from their plans syncable with wahoo (like with training peaks), strava would be a total one stop shop in the wahoo-verse. I think R599 a year is quite reasonable for what the product does. Flybys as a feature was cool for 5min when it launched 7yrs ago, I really didn’t see its value myself.
  17. I recently fitted a 42-11t sunrace 11 speed cassette to my 2018 Diverge (Axis 4.0 wheel set). In less than 100km the cassette developed a seriously frustrating rattle. The top three big cogs fused together seem to have way too much tolerance for a Shimano freewheel hub. The rattle didn’t come from lateral but vertical play, so a spacer did not help fix the situation. Ended up using plumbing tape to solve the problem. Works perfectly!
  18. In my experience outsourcing leads to more loss of time to enjoy the sport, learn the skills, do a course, build the toolset, and enjoy the ride 20% more knowing you did it yourself.
  19. Yoh dude it’s Sunday, no waging keyboard wars like that allowed! Anyway it’s not like the exotics are dominating the Tour, o wait ...
  20. I dont even know where to start with my criticisms of this ... Setting aside that the pricing will probably be astronomical and that the proprietary nature of campy in general will make this a really exclusive product. These are givens so ill try be realistic with my mockery: 1 - Honestly, a non direct mount crankset? The integrated spider looks horrible! (and probably a 91.2bcd to ensure no existing chainrings fit, and ill bet they reverse thread it or something silly to make it non-economical for 3rd parties to support it) 2 - 13 chainrings - wow! they got here first but, only a 44t big chain ring? Who needs 13 ratios to gravel grind, this is not road racing. 3 - The Cassette is Built on two blocks - SRAM mastered eagle with a single block cassette, meaning a far more solid construction (literally) no creeks. There is no doubt that this launch is targeted at the gravel crowd who are emerging from the exotic road crowd who want their exotic frames to be donned with exotic jewellery - i totally get it, for them SRAM or Shimano is just a non starter.
  21. Make sure you keep your eyes on the trail ahead and not the over stated jump stat gimmick garmin have invented
  22. I smile when I see ads like this one https://bikehub.co.za/classifieds/item/computers-and-gps/428616/garmin-edge-510 Selling a 510 for an “upgrade” to a 530 is seriously the wrong way around. I think the 510 is thee 5 series to own.
  23. I think the fenix 3 is too much tech for most, even 5 yrs after its launch. We will hear stories of grandparents handing them down for generations to come. I’ve heard of a number of issues the the 5 and 6 series, I think Garmin had their ducks in a row properly with the 3.
