  1. bring it on just moved to behind Virgin. For those that ride regularly in the Highway area, how about posting some maps for us, sought of turn this thread into an "official" route guide to Highway and surrounding?
  2. go hydraulic, the clarks were pretty good value for money from crc
  3. you going to go fixie or singlespeed? i would start with singlespeed first. Keep everything so later when old age creeps up and the knees start taking strain you can go back to gears. I want that copper color on my bikes!
  4. Another thing I noticed is quite a few of the singlespeed hubs (and some a lot of std ones) are coming without quick releases and with nuts instead; is this better for ss? my old ss had quick release and didn't seem to have a problem but the "safety" word is thrown around a lot so any difference?
  5. can't find them on crc, are they the trials ones?
  6. I was initially going to go with a 9-speed hub with the gearclamp from singlespeed.co.za 'coz they offered me a really nice deal, but then I got sidetracked by pics of some nice phil woods ss hubs, though totally out of my price range, the idea of a non-dished ss specific hub is kinda nice.
  7. I'm about to place an order with CRC but am not sure what hubs to use on my ss. I can either go for a ss hub like the Fire Eye Excelerant RS 1214 or get a 8/9/10 speed hub and use a spacer kit. Anyone used this hubs or come accross anything about them? What hubs (not phil wood or chris king, they not in my budget) are a good ss idea? Also ordering rims and spokes.
  8. is it environmentally friendly?
  9. where does he drive from? spare a though from anyone in the midlands or further who want to race lol seems this is a marketing opportunity for gateway as well

  11. I love my fixie, honestly it feels more like riding than my ss and even more than more my originally geared bike. I only get to ride it over the weekend on a Sunday morning to breakfast since it's pretty hilly around me and I haven't quite got the hang of skidding to slow down. As soon as the legs are strong enough and I've mastered that skidding stop, I'll commute with it when I can.
  12. i decided to try the early morning ride, didn't hear any of the alarms (3 set) and finally rolled out of bed a cup of coffee ago. i'll be sticking to afternoons as well.
  13. i'm going to try some early morning rides and see how it goes, have no idea how the hell i'm going to get up that early though, maybe i'll start by aiming for say 6am and see how that goes. i'm done for the day, so i'm off for a 20kay ride now, enjoy y'all!
  14. does everyone eat in the mornings before starting out? and what? also what length of rides are you doing?
  15. A jogger told me yesterday that when she runs early morning she sees plenty of cyclists out on the roads, whereas when I go for my afternoon ride/commute I only see one or two. Do most people cycle early morning? Is it better to train at certain times of the day rather than other times? I would go in the mornings but I can't get out of bed until about 7:30, though if it's better to train early morning I'll make the effort. What time do you guys normally train at, and for how long (week-days)?

    Winter commuting

Visibility and weather are my winter commuting bugbears. On Thursday last week I started off with just my baggies and a loose Mr.Price sports shirt, the sun was out early and it was nice and warm and looked to be a perfect day. About 30 min before knocking off for home, the weather looked ok'ish, the sun was still out but their were a few dark looking clouds hanging about. 8km Into a 18km commute, the clouds took over and the heavens opened up, within 2 min I was drenched. The rain then stopped, but temperatures had plummeted, which meant I rode the last 10km's home wet and against an arctic headwind. So aside from just lighting, you got to think about clothing as well. My cycling bag now houses laptop, two A4 notebooks, change of clothes (including shoes), a towel, full emergency repair kit, a few odds and ends and now, wet weather gear. Starting to think panniers might be the way to go.
  20. I saw the paper this morning and was horrified myself. Having been a former policeman, I know how difficult it can be to investigate something like the above, there certainly is no csi like on tv. A big part of the problem is the workload detectives have to carry around, a mate of mine carries 40+ active dockets at any one time. Unfortunately because of this, some cases receive priority and some fall to the way side. The only time this is ever going to change is if the law changes in order to allow civil action against individual police members; you'll see a major change of attitude then I reckon. On the other side of the coin, are we as cyclists doing enough for the local law enforcement to take serious? I think very often we all have something to say on the forums and then forget about it the second we log off. I have suggested it before, and I'll do it again, mass actions do work so perhaps a critical mass in Durban and other centers should be considered?
  21. this is insane! there seems to be a desperation out there where these thugs literally have nothing to loose and are happy to kill over a bicycle! hope he recovers soon!
  22. Am I the only one who thinks this story sounds a little suspect? The guy's riding his bike and two guys in an Audi A3 try to run him over, twice? Sounds like there's a little more to this story if you ask me.
  23. will do, thanks guys
  24. Chumba just launched their new hard tails in both 26 and 29'er version, look so sweet! Anyone know of local stockists/agents of Chumba, interested in pricing. http://www.singletrackworld.com/wp-content/blogs.dir/1/files/2011/03/hx1-2011.jpg
