  1. I am not sure i like the idea of short route merging, a bit like Mtb races where the young guns racing the short loop for school honours feed back into the mid field of the longer loop and doing stupid things to get past. That said the M1 is hardly single track and should be wide enough. and the serious guys would have passed by that time. Given my lack of road seeding and riding on MTB I guess i will find out how well this works on the day ;-) Fingers crossed

  3. So there is a lot that goes in to the back end , we recently did a multi day ride supported by Friends in a bakkies. It was not a lot cheaper than sani2cThere were no water points ( food or drink)No mechanical or medical supportSome frustrations when things don' t go according to planNo route marking / gps files ;-) A different experience , but all said having it all logistics laid on is pretty special
  4. All depends on your intent 1) Training/lsd mtb ride on roads you can not ride otherwise vs 2) Putting down a respectable time A road bike will get you a better time no doubt !
  5. I love these closed road rides ( note rides ) and treat it as a good day out. I use my commuter , a 1x10 hard tail mtb , carbon fork with same saddle and grips as my MTB and low rolling resistance tyres. A great day out and good time in saddle for stage races Awesome way to see the city , even if you just do it even as a base to buy a Road bike. I have done it on a road bike but mid field , it sat out 2 947's and arguses and was than sold Each to their own , Just Ride ;-)

  7. Do ghetto version , with Your garmin , garmin speed and cadence sensors Than step up and pair this to an ant dongle and a laptop / apple tv / pc to get your self into it
  8. The sponsor has got endless mileage out of it, so not all bad ;-)
  9. In the 2018 Sani Race, they took your bikes as we crossed the line and took them to bike wash and bike park once clean. Than only you can fetch your bike as it's number matches your armband. We had to fetch clean bike and take to mechanic , who was good but expensive insurance as nothing went wrong.
  10. In fairness, it looked like she took him out from behind !
  11. I was aware of the various cutoff at points and finish line at 17h00 as these were clearly published in the route description, the 7hr was in the fine print that I was only directed to when querying. ( anyone who read all the terms and conditions can throw the first stone ;-) ) I was aware of 17h00 as it was published clearly and we crawled home within that. Also the 94'7 , Sani2c , berg'nBish all have cutoffs and are in place as the course needs to close but do allow an earlier starter to have a bad day, mechanical and still get a finish with the tail of the field and come back the next day or keep his streak going. Yes, it is a fine print rule! but people who crossed the line after us got a finish so it really does leave a bad taste.
  12. So forgive a quick rant I have loved the Capecycle tour the last two years and did 2019 with my young son, seeing the guys with multiple tours on their backs get us motivated. We did it on hardtail mountain bikes with nobblies and had a hard ride with wind and rain but toughed it out to finish in 7:21 within the cutoff proper vasbyt stuff Now I am told that as we did not do it in 7 hrs it is a DNF. I have got around all the other moans and groans about the event, wind or no wind, water or no water, event prices, goodie bags, seeding , bike transport cost, flight costs etc all bla bla bla and taken in my stride but this I cant and doubt I will be spending money on this again.
  13. @ Craig To make some lemonade of your lemon A new 520 would have set you back around 6000 you are in for 4650 so a good discount and now have a new unit with a warranty. Not what you intended but look at the upside, its the only one you have :-)
  14. Correct the swat box in frame is raised and will not take this
  15. Hi Guys Looking at riding Breedts nek this coming weekend , and looking for info on condition particularly the far side down to the farm stall. BTW - The stall was closed on visit to mountain sanctuary on 13/01/2019 , Locked up and benches also gone so looks long term.
  16. Where are you hoping to ride from to ? my car commute is opposite ie : up the M1 , four ways to centurion
  17. Commute through Sylvia's pass ? NICE !!!
  18. Although i don't do it often as due to distance Twice as long as drive but half as stressful It gets some training in Puts me in a great mood
  19. My biggest fear when in traffic
  20. Update on commute Ok so leaving car at office was no problem I am not fit enough so did a work from home day and rode back a day later 2 x 32+ km rides by wednesday is a good feeling Somehow the commuting is harder mileage as is part of a bigger dayMondays are tough days in office to do a 32km ride afterwards is tough I cannot eat enough Running flashing lights front and back is a good idea its pretty cool overtaking traffic ;-) You develop a sixth sense as to which drivers will look you in the eye an pull out in front of you anyway
  21. I am keen for commuting as a way of getting some training in , on a bad day traffic is about an hour by car, so commuting will achieve that and improve mood compared to traffic However my commute is 36 km one way so 72 km per day , which I have done a few times kills me when you add a full days work in and is to much at current fitness levels. ( i have done little since trans eeek) There are lot's of pavement and Jeep track , even some technical single track , some pavement hopping and about 40% road but fairly quite or with decent yellow lines so not excuses. There is a gym at office , so shower facilities but you may not use lockers outside of workout similar to Vigin Active. Also there is no real safe bike storage, albeit parking is in a single tenant secured office park. So having followed and read this whole thread , I plan on driving to work , with bike on rack , leave car there with bag of clothes in and ride homethan ride back the next morning leaving bike locked to rack on car and take bag to gym and than office. Update: I did this on monday and road full on into a highveld thunderstorm. A head wind all the way home and got soaked through.Lots of fun in the puddlesSingle track in the gloom.Luckily i put lights on front and back for the gloomA few tweaks got the route down to 32km.Interesting how road works are in your favorA robot out is easier to cross than when it is working. You can strategically ride on either pavement depending on next turn. Jeep track on servitude has being created by taxi'sTaxi are more more courteous than othersSome cars simply do not see a 6'4" cyclist in neon windbreaker and a flashing light !!! to be repeated !!
  22. Bought some but under duress for first race etc , quality has go to worse and worse , less photos for same price , can bring my self to pay +/- R500 for one half decent pic of me Least they could do for that price is Photoshop beer boep out !!!
