  1. Charm an old lady, thats how I got mine Its very hard to source them but keep your eye open for second hand stores. I was lucky mine is in mint condition and was hardly used.
  2. My coffee machine is a plunger, kettle and one of those old english cast iron nr 3 coffee grinders. Made the best cup of Kenyan coffee this morning from beans my mom bought on the plantation a few weeks back for me.
  3. Did not take photos but I was on Route 62 into Barrydale two days ago. Best ride I've had in years and cannot wait to go back for some more.
  4. Another 35 owner who agrees. @OP if your getting the Bryton at a bargain then its a great device.
  5. A good public school in my area is R1K per child per month. We are lucky not to need private schools where I live (they are more for bragging rights and kids that cannot get admitted to public school). But then again a good nanny to look after the kids is R4K pm else after care is about R3K for two kids. Then we need to factor in extra lessons or speech therapy for my son which ads another R1K to the budget. Just providing a good education and a child minder is costing us at least R7K per month. Without considering inflation, this figure will shoot up to R10K in the next few years as we start factoring in sport and extra tutoring like Master Maths / Master Science.
  6. I'm currently being head-hunted and the first thing I tell everybody is that there are 2 requirements: * The company must be on the public transport route I use * I must be allowed to work 3 days a week from home. More and more people are now telecommuting and its the practical solution.
  7. In reality your talking more like R40K after tax as they are assuming the family only eats pap all day long. Wife and I got a shock to see how much money we actually earned while working out our budget (she is self employed and salary depends on business). This was during the time that I started that thread about my frustrations of not being able to buy a house even though we could afford it. I have a lot of empathy for lower income earners as life is about to get a whole lot tougher for them as I've never forgotten what its like to be really poor.
  8. Every time I see that picture I wonder: What does Wolverine do when he has an itch down below?
  9. I know manufacturers downplayed the cause instead of accepting blame for a bad design. Did a lot of research when I bought my lock a few years back.
  10. Learn how to loop the cable through your bike, very important. Especially to secure the wheel. Lots of youtube videos.
  11. Doubt a bad batch, it was a lock design that has since been replaced on all quality locks. Its those stupid cylinder keys. Even our cheap safe at home can be opened with a ball pen.
  12. I use Kryptonite u-lock and cable with no fear. Even lock up my bike at the lock post office (which has a taxi round surrounding it). My broker will never believe me if my bike every gets stolen with that lock. Also do ignore the stories about opening these locks with bic pens, that was an issue with old designs and has been resolved. http://www.kryptonitelock.com
  13. I've been a victim of crime so many times in the last decade I've lost count but I've learn't to never let it ruin my life. If I allowed the actions of others to change who I am, then I would not be the person I am today, instead I would be a very sad man living locked away in an underground bunker.
  14. True Our nanny is more a victim of crime than what we are. Difference is I can afford to secure my property and pay for armed response.
  15. My magistrate buddy always tells me: "Dead men cannot testify"
  16. Another story for another thread. And yes, I got the house for so cheap its criminal. Ironic that there where not even a total of 22 break ins since 2001 when most of the current neighbours bought their houses (old Somchem / Denel manager houses). One neighbour (34yrs old) grew up here and had his first break in two weeks ago (I only moved in last week Tuesday). Heck, this guy does not even have spikes or electric fencing and his yard borders a rather dodgy walk way. Seller was also renting out the house and tenant was evicted last week Sunday.
  17. The biggest mistake a lot of us make is not to report even the most mundane criminal event. While it might seem that police do not do enough, reporting crimes might make the difference when they need to allocate their limited resources. It also helps armed response to strategically place their guys in these hot spots.
  18. Not my wall, need to take photos but its sad we need to start looking like Jozie. I'm now in corner of Bonaero & Voortrekker in Bridgewater (can see the station platform from my kitchen). Funny that the criminals where not the usual suspects from the station. Would rather tell you offline who they where as there are still criminal investigations. Lets just say me moving in resulted in the problem being one step closer to resolved.
  19. In the mid 80's we had a kid from Jozie in our class and his dad started a local security firm. First time ever we saw automatic firearms. Considering that this was Gordons Bay that has the Navy College. Heck, I did not even see automatic firearms in the Naval College when we use to go there. I now live in Somerset West and we have lots of armed response but its very seldom you will see any of them with automatic weapons. Its Slaapstad.
  20. I fitted these rolling spikes to my perimeter wall this last week as my new house had 22 break-ins in the last 6 months before I moved in last week. Just the day before my move they stole two outside brass taps and a basin from the maids toilet. Only had the house for a week but no more incidents. Now my neighbours also want to fit them. They cost R100 pm (ex VAT, delivery is R250 per order). Very easy DIY project and can be fitted on flat surfaces and precast walls. This should never be your only defence but it works very well as a deterrent. Nothing will stop a criminal who has targeted your house but it will stop crimes of opportunity. http://www.starwalls.co.za http://www.starwalls.co.za/resources/graphics/jpeg/photo/DSC01417.jpg
  21. +1 Responsible firearm ownership. Reason why we handed in our firearm as neither my wife or I would be able to use it in a situation.
  22. Thanks, don't want to derail this thread so I will keep my comments for another thread.
  23. I get rather irritated when people feel they need to use pseudo names when describing criminals. So are they implying it was coloured kids or was it black kids (from Bravo Charlie)? Or where the caucasian? Its not illegal to use a persons physical characteristics to describe them and its especially important when its criminals.
  24. What is the art form called? I love it and have never viewed it as vandalism but as art (the same as artistic graffiti). I would love to get this done on my precast wall one-day.
  25. Sounds like the start of a bad Blou Bille joke
