  1. I would say try to get in contact with either the DVCC or CMC clubs. They recently started their Around the Pot training and are doing group gravel rides on Saturday mornings in the area. This is the best way to play it safe and also not worry too much about route planning or trying to search for those 'hidden' gravel roads. Both usually start from Durbanville. Routes vary each weekend - can be anything between 60km and 120km, depending on the route. PM me if you need contact details.
  2. Ooooff. You're going to get so many varying opinions in this one. And yes I'm going to give you mine as well of course - I believe it's something each person has to 'work out' for him or herself. What works for one person will not necessarily work for another. We're all built different (i.e. metabolisms). Some of my mates get by on a single fast bar on a long ride, whereas I've gone as far as occasionally stuffing a PB sandwich in my back pocket.... That said - keep on experimenting and remember: 'eat now for later'. In other words when you eat only by the time you get hungry on a ride, it's a bit too late. Also agree with @Super Sywurm. Ditch the future life as a pre-ride breakfast and go for a proper meusli / oats with bananas and some honey. One of my favourites.

  4. So according to @ChrisF 's latest post, I got the 'smart rack', in other words the bars with detachable 'feet' (footpack). My car has rails and I got the Thule bars as a gift a while ago. So then I just got the Thule 757 footpack separately. After that I got two Thule proride bike racks. If you know exactly what you need and look around on the hub and even FB you might pick up good 2nd hand deals on these, still in excellent condition. I saved a lot taking this route.
  5. I used to have one of those hanging clip on racks and I despised it. Sure it worked well hauling the bike around town for whatever the reason is, but I had constant issues with it driving on the highway going on holidays (usually a 5hr trip on the N2). And this was only one mtb on a 'three' bike carrier. No matter how many additional straps I used (through the wheels, frame and rack) the bike just wouldn't stay completely put. Die fiets wapper nogsteeds in die wind op 120km/hr man. One time the rubber holding strap tore and the bike came loose as well. Yes I fixed it properly each time. Yes I still had anxiety looking in the rear view seeing the bike dangling somewhat when riding on the highway. Pulled the trigger and got a roofrack setup - definitely worth the money, no issues anymore. Blood pressure down to normal.

  7. Taking a chance here... Anyone in the Grootbrak / Kleinbrak / Glentana area I can borrow a shock pump from? It's the one thing I didn't pack.....and now I need it lol.
  8. +1 for My Wellness. I use their Vegan Protein just because I struggle with a sensitive gut and this is a very clean product. Instead of sugar they use a bit of stevia leaf extract. Nutritech also has a few options with stevia leaf extract instead of sugar, although I still found them to be a bit too sweet. Taste is of course very subjective though...
  9. Yeah although I understand the point of this thread, it's getting depressing very quickly...but a great excuse to go for a ride tomorrow morning for some much needed serotonin!
  10. Did an early morning gravel loop before hitting the trails at 70km. Needless to say...the trails were all of a sudden bit harder than usual... Top of the Hillcrest climb with a view of our majestic mountain in the distance.
  11. I did exactly that on an old(ish) Ryder Force saddle. It did the job perfectly. Had to do it every 6 months or so then it would shut up again.

  13. I'm in the same boat (buying my first GPS cycling computer), but leaning towards garmin. Mainly because I had excellent after sales experience with them before. My forerunner GPS watch was unable to pick up GPS signal any longer, this was just after the warranty expired. I still sent it to them to have a look at - they just sent me a brand new watch, free of charge. Only paid courier fees. They certainly won my loyalty.

    Is the route for the half attakwas open in general at any time of the year, or does it go through any private land that's only open for the race?

Hi Folks So we're staying over in the area (Glentana) for some holidays and my initial plan was to shoot through from here to do Swartberg pass, but unfortunately it's closed for the time being. I'm rather considering Montagu pass instead as I've never done it before. Plan is to drop the family at Red Berry Strawberry farm while I shoot up to do Montagu Pass to Herold and back (solo). I understand that, in essence, it's not safe in anywhere anymore in ZA to ride alone. But in an effort to minimise the risk - what would be the safest route to get onto Montagu Pass from the strawberry farm?
  22. I recently bought two GU gels at a well known bike shop. Shortly afterwards, on the day of using them, I realised they have expired about 5 months ago. Still used them. Was the same as always for me.
  23. 2020 was an interesting year... Purchased a MTB again in May after not cycling for three years. However I wasn't sure I got the right bike for my riding style. Just like dating in high school, I worked through x4 bikes until I found the one I'm happy with! Then I also dived head first into the world of IDT and got a smart trainer & Zwift. 184 hours 2608km for the year 39 982m elevation Started to progressively build up my fitness and increased my riding to x5days per week, then I crashed and broke my fibula three weeks ago. Suddenly I was also saying 'Tsek 2020'. Looking forward to starting over again in 2021 and crush those goals.
  24. Funny you say this. One of my best mates used to work for a luxury car brand as a Salesman. He said the moment a guy walks into the dealership with a kortbroek and plakkies, they know he's the real deal. Most guys walking in with suits and fancy clothes just wasted their time.
  25. Jeez..sorry for your loss. So many bikes being stolen from garages lately, whether by forcing open the doors, locks or finding another way in. My bike is sleeping inside the house from now on.
