Its obviously specific to where you ride, but I don't like to mess with air pressures once they are right. In general though, I think we typically run forks to hard. Listen to the Pinkbike Podcast with Jesse Melamed... Comfort comes first, even for those strong guys. I typically air up my fork to much after a service(cause I often cant remember the exact pressure it was on) slightly to firm feels about right in the garage.. but after riding something like  Armageddon (top to bottom)the first time after the service I go down a couple of PSI for best result. It actually feels a bit to soft in the parking lot test, but experience have taught me to leave it alone.

I don't necessarily think the fork should bottom on each ride, unless you hit big g-outs every ride, one wants to reserve some travel for special occasions :)

I need my fork to have "support" in the middle-ish part of it's travel, so that it's not blowing through a lot of travel just by my weight moving forward. So need a bit more psi to stop this from happening. The fancier forks can pump full of psi and still have the top travel plush, to help with the claw.

    Thanks for all the advice.
Will probably be going with Armor ride in the future or perhaps the Bike Shield mentioned above.
Unfortunately none are an option right now, bike is being collected Friday and shredding commences Saturday so I'm going to go with a quick temporary/ish solution just to ensure my heart doesn't break on day one.

I'm going to be picking up a clear "stone chip resistant" vinyl from Maizeys which is 250 microns thick (0.25mm) which comes in a big sheet for only 380 odd rand.

Is there a specific reason people don't go this route of just cutting their own vinyl ? is it just the ease of an already cut kit? Just curious as a single sheet of the vinyl would be able to accommodate a few bikes at the cost of less than half the kit for one bike.

I just did my 4th frame with the maizey's stuff. Made a rudimentary template from paper and then traced it onto the vinyl. For funny angles like thin seatstays/chainstays use a hairdryer to apply. Took a couple of hours and had to recut a few pieces, but came out alright.

    Hi

    Reviving an old topic.

I recently managed to get a pair of 5 Ten  Freerider Pro (previously riding  with Leatt 3.0 Flats). I have Shimano PD-GR500 flat pedals. I noticed that after one ride that the soles of the 5 Tens are slightly damaged by the pins. Is this normal?

That also got me googling regarding pin length. There seems to be a lot of different views regarding this topic and I was wondering what other Hubbers think regarding maybe installing the washers to the pins to shorten them a bit (to save the shoes)? Will this have a marked impact on the grippiness of the shoes on pedals.

I was also wondering if the shorter pins may allow slightly more manoevarability of the shoe on the pedals, without necessarily causing the foot to slide off. I sometime feel that my foot is in the wrong place and the only way I can move it is to lift it and put it back down again. Could shorter pins benefit here or will it be too much of a grip compromise?

Googling pedals also led me to best flat pedals and the Shimano's simply don't feature in any of the top ten reviews. Should I be looking at something else like Hope or Nukeproof (that is if I could get)?

Apologies for the disjointed post and questions that this venture to new shoes has opened.

DMR vaults get my vote for best pedals, pin length full size, and don't worry about the wear on the sole. I commuted about 2 years on pair of 5.10 contact's before I had to throw them in the bin. They'll have some scarring from the pins but shouldn't fall apart.

  5. I went and tried on all the 'top' shoes, did some treadmill testing and came home with 2 different variants of the ASICS range.

After growing up with ASICS tigers and other variants, they felt like home. Ugly as sin, but comfortable and feel like they will do the business.

Looking forward to testing them out over the coming months.

It feels liberating having shed the brand shackles

I swap between 0 and 10/12mm drop without even noticing, but a narrow toe box or rigid heel cup is my achilles heel.

  6. Hey guys looking to do a 10k sub 40min in Aug / Sep (training to start in June). I see Garmin has some good progarmmes otherwise I might buy one of Ben Parkes websites. You guys have any recommendations ?

I recently completed one of the garmin 10k plans, was intermediate, can't remember which coach I chose. It was a bit light on the easy running, but the workouts were spot on. There was often 1 rest day separating hard workouts, and even a hard workout with a long run the next day.

Syncing the calendar to the watch and the guided workouts were a plus, and it's free.

  7. HELP .... Morning Gang

Struggling with a Ryzen 5600 build that wont post ,

    Asus 570 prime mobo , Ballistics Ram (2 x 16)

fans spin up ... no onboard speaker to listen to beeps.

Tried obvious ram slot swopping, single , dual etc . tried other graphics card , no post at all.

sent CPU Back , confirmrmed working with a report. Sent Mobo Back, manufacturer said faulty... supplied a brand new one .

same outcome, no post( No display outputting).

dont have another cpu (3600 or 2700 to see if it at least boots up as it may need a bios update) .

Everything ordered online ... anyone in gauteng that has parts to swop and test so i know what the hell to replace for him. might even just be simple like a psu with 1 mad pin ...

    Suggestions groot ASSEBLIEF

I think you might be on the money with the BIOS update, check if your motherboard has bios flashback (it should). There'll be a detailed guide from asus, but it's pretty much just connect the motherboard to the power supply (doesnt need cpu/graphics/memory installed) with the bios on a flash drive, press the bios flashback and wait 5-10 minutes.

I had to do this with an msi b550, was easy apart from the formatting the usb needed (had to format it as non-bootable).

  8. I've got a massage tip/head that goes on a jigsaw, and does pretty much the same thing. So there is that option, if you want to tim-the-toolman-taylor it. I already had a cordless jigsaw, the attachment was R250 off amazon.

It works really well when the DOMS makes my muscles ache, provides immediate relief and can target some areas better than foam rolling/lacrosse ball, where it's difficult or awkward to position the muscle.

  9. Left pedal loosens clockwise? Also, more leverage and a way to keep the cranks in place helps. I put the pedal on the other crank arm facing inwards, so that it braced against the frame (with some cushioning).

  10. Oh how times have changed though ;)

Many of the new ones have excellent compression circuits. That coupled with the suspension kinematics can make the climbing on the coil actually better, albeit subjectively and negating the +-300g mass penalty.

For 2 examples, when I went from air (Monarch Plus) to coil (CC DB Coil IL) on my 2016 Banshee Spitfire (140mm rear KS link), I did notice marginally more pedal bob on the coil, but with the LSC lever that is mostly negated.

Now I have a 2018 Transition Patrol (160mm rear 4 bar?) I also went from air (Fox DPX2) to coil (Super Deluxe Coil) and OMG...honestly, it pedals better than the air (yes I feel it was setup well, just not entirely suited to the biek and my preference). The LCS lever is also not just on/off and traction, especially on tech, on the climbs is incredible.

100% would not go back to the DPX2, but would like to try a Float X2 sometime for comparison.

Anyway, it's kinda *** because unless you know someone to loan a shock from to test, it's potentially a big $$$ risk. But once you've had the feeling of it setup well..and it suits your bike kinematics, it can't be beat for feel

I have a patrol and you're making my kop jik, luckily very few international etailers are shipping to za. I can't fault the dpx2, and have always wanted a coil for the looks.

  11. Have to carry some spares and im old fashioned :whistling:

When you get a dropper you'll have to get rid of the ol' bag. There are plenty of bottle cage or other area tool storage options, just saying. I've gone overboard and now have a tool under my bottle cage and one in the tube roll, can never be too prepared.

When you get a dropper you'll have to get rid of the saddle bag!

  12. Thanks for the input guys.

Going to start shopping for the switch

This topic has divided our family (the extended crowd). Some are all for the idea, while others are still old school and think kids should not have access to electronic games.

If you're quick you can get a switch at incredible for R2199.
  13. Any advice for calf cramps please?

Of late I started to feel my calves during and after my runs and during last years Comrades I struggled with it and also this past weekends marathon. I am able to walk it off and go on, but it is on the limit the whole time then, biting the whole time. My calves are always tight and sore as well.

I have never struggled with cramps before and always run the long stuff with Hammer endurolytes fizz and extreme tablets and I lean towards over hydrate, not dehydrate

I did run this marathon harder than normally, so I do keep that in mind, but the weather was cold and perfect.

Is there perhaps something that I might be missing to add to my diet, exercise or running nutrition? It is not a train smash, but I just want to make sure I'm not missing something small perhaps.

Do you do strength training /lift weights?
  14. Thanks Morne. I have it set up according to the recommendations from GG for my riding style. On the site you’ll find this at size configurator. I’ll play around and see what fit I like best. Same story with the hight of the bars.

Get a Lekker riser bar and slamthatstem.com
  15. Yep I'm on a rim a year, and actually accept it. There's foam inserts there's dh skin tyres there's rattle my spine pressures and then there's trail stoke and bad luck. The last is me

.... At least that's what o tell myself

Aren't you already on one taco for the year, and it's only Januworry...?

  16. I've also started to dabble with a bit of running.

Lungs are fine. Heart rate is fine. Legs not so much. My fiance is going through the same thing. Her pain sounds much like yours. Mine is a pain in my lower calf and my ankles. We're limiting ourselves to a once a week park run for now and we'll reassess as we go.

I've been told the key is to slowly ease into this new thing and not go too hard from the start coz your lungs will write cheques your legs can't cash. 6-8 weeks is the time frame I'm told.

I think as a cyclist. Especially a roadie. Your stabilization muscles become weak because the bike is supporting you.

Apart from going slow, you need to strengthen by doing exercises that those stabilizing muscles. There's a 50% reduction in overuse injuries just by targeted strengthening. I could have saved myself lots of pain just by following this advice. Check out running rewired by Jay Dicharry.
  17. I am so flippen bleak right now. I don’t know if a different stem will even help. I have like 1. Something of steerer sticking out there.

And then alles together for playing arounds sake.

http://www.robbiesbicycleconcept.co.za can replace the steerer, I think. About 1.8k or thereabouts.
