  1. I'm always a bit more wary after having work done at my house or even in the complex. I suspect that more than a few workers (particularly casual labourers) suss out their surroundings for robbery potential while they are meant to be working. This could include the ADT manne.
  2. RIP to the cyclist. Some good suggestions here but what can each of us actually do? I have nagged, threatened, assisted (lifts, taxi fare etc) etc my kids about driving after drinking. I am way more careful than I was in my stupid youth (well, stupider than I am now if that's possible). CSA should certainly lend a hand to monitor the prosecution and support the family. As an aside I believe Glen Haw has personally been incredibly supportive, involved and helpful to the widow of the Sani2c competitor who was killed returning to Jhb. Nedbank coughed up the insurance money in a flash too. Otherwise its more breathalysers near well known all night drinking spots (casino in Durban), some sort of threat to those serving alcohol to drunks and making alternatives known. But I wouldn't know how to start doing any of the above. CSA should apply what pressure they can.
  3. @TNT! (Troll ne troll) and the biggest disgrace of wit ou's are the cyclists. Absolutely terrible. lol. Somehow I don't think they'll notice if you don't support them.
  4. My estates manager deserves a mention on this topic. You should see what that oke can do with old bicycle tubes (I know Johan, I should mend them). From lopped over the saddle to hang the bicycles from the roof, mending the garden hose/sewer pipe to making a monkey proof dust bin lid. The man is brilliant.
  5. @petatodd; I second TNT1; there are always choices and consequences as well as simple luck, good and bad. A scary tale is the one where young athletes were asked if they would take a drug that would guarantee them World Championship status or similar but would kill them at 35. The majority answered in the affirmative. I don't remember if the drug was illegal or not. The possibly scarier part is that I asked my son the same question when he was a teenager, very, very focussed (read stubborn/pigheaded) and in the top handful in his sport (non mainstream) in SA. He didn't turn it down. Again, illegality didn't come into it. If you are prepared to pay that price?
  6. SA is pretty much an unpoliced, survival of the fittest, devil take the hindmost, I'll choose what laws apply to me type of society. In this situation I think the common sense approach is best. Riding a bicycle on the road makes you the lowest form of life to many drivers; not just taxis. Riding abreast etc is Darwinian; it's not if, it's when you will be crushed by some mechanical beast that is higher up the weight chain that your (or someone else's) behaviour has irritated. That's ignoring the 9am gym/school moms applying make up, adjusting the radio, drinking coffee latte and gabbing on the cell phone, late for pedi/mani whatever fills their day. I've nearly been nailed by such a stereotype so excuse my irritation. I won't start on the blueheads and drivers wearing hats. I also waste time on 4x4 and offroad mbike forums and am surprised and disappointed at the amount of aggro directed at cyclists. Be careful (sensible?) out there.
  7. @Dirt Eater - chew that stuff propery otherwise your 1kg offload will carve splines in your ring piece. As my old boss used to say: "Gaining weght is due to fanta. Fanta te veel eet en te min ***, ja!"
  8. I'm with @Dale; Proteas took foot off pedal with Pakis at 75-7 odd and Kallis and the Morkels persisted in bowling long hops to the "nothing to lose" Gal . Kallis a "slower ball" ffs. Where's the Wasim Akram toe crusher I say? Persist like this and enjoy the "chokers" tag.
  9. Agree with stroke correction - best money you can spend. Better even than bike fitting.
  10. The OP haters and three a breast supporters reminds me of that old saying: "I'll defend my right of way to the death" or something similar.
  11. I'm more worried about the gyroscopic effect of those big wheels that will de-stabilise the earth, causing it to veer off into the universe, closer or further from the sun depending on which side of the earth there are more 29'ers. Then we'll either freeze or cook. The problem with Corioli's is that if you aim for a certain point with your 29'er you'll drift off to one side. Opposite side in the northern hemisphere. That's why you keep crashing in that loose sand on the side of the district road.
  12. I suspect that riding or running on the road is so *** that they wouldn't mind being run over to put them out of their misery. lol. Or it's Darwin in action. Pity about the wife and kids but Darwin can be cruel. Ask the dodo. It's not so much about the laws as about common sense. One of those little sayings "I'll defend my right of way to the death".
  13. Agree 100% with the fitting. Also try relax your hands, shoulders and neck when riding. Try softer or shaped grips (the Spez ones work well for me) and better gloves, maybe long fingered gloves (Spec. gloves helped a friend of mine). Last thing to fiddle with is the shock.
  14. Waaah, my logic tells me that the second half are more sandy soils which get wet and soft but aren't that muddy and slippery . Big pluses - no dust, no dehydration (yeah right!). The first half is the despicable Midlands and Hilton slippery snot infested with horrible round boulders. Causes you to fall off then stays stuck on the bike wheels. You wuss, you. Ahem, I'm not riding and bleddy glad too.
  15. Not if you are a surfer! I'm guessing there was a bit of chumming involved. I think that the organisers and team that produce these programmes should be in the water while filming to prove their "theory" that chumming does not cause sharkes to attack humans. With the cameras on them for proof of course.
  16. Don't boycott them. Fill a trolley with perishables and leave it at the till.
  17. Amusing about Gwin's brakes - maybe Greg just used his less, a lot less!!
  18. 100% on getting off the track if you dismount in a rideable section; particularly on a downhill! I'm no Greg Minnaar but also come from off road motorcycle background and have a reasonable feeling for what is quite fast (for me anyway) on downhills. A recent race was quite funny as near the start a youth whistled past and I thought "whew, he's smoken; I'm getting slooow". Seconds later, said youth is cutting a furrow in the pine needles with his face. A little later some big lad out braked me to a turn from jeep track to single track. Again I thought that there were some sick skills in the back of the pack with me. Well the lad out braked himself and went whistling into the timber at a cracking pace to overtake later and inevitably on an uphill with camouflaging grass and a shrubbery still being shed from his helmet. Another back of pack gent with a GoPro attached also obligingly ploughed the single track just ahead of me. I hope he got the footage. Morale of the storey - please crash where other riders can see you - it's a welcome distraction from their suffering.
  19. Good one! The wheelie will continue to claim victims as long as there are bicycles and motorcycles. Been there, grazed and hurt that, on both. As regards the back brake, note that he said that the back wheel was in the air! You've got to be quick with that thing. Dylan Victor is bleddy good (imho); who remembers Ian Soames in Durbs (now in NZ).
  20. Can't agree Nishiki. As to the repair schedule, you live in a dream world methinks (bit like Eccy). Maybe google for the cyclists who successfully sued the eThekwini Mun. and KZN DoT for compensation after being injured by falling due to a pothole. As for the costing more; you are trolling surely.
  21. Too many years on dirt motor bikes - have to have front brake on the right.
  22. Maybe not much different to that saying (from racing MX etc in the US, I think); "win on Sunday; sell on Monday". Thinking about what they buy and their abilities as hardly being related to the full race article and operator doesn't enter the heads.
  23. Loctite is your friend
  24. Yep, saw that and she put up a spirited fight after that for bronze but against the world No. 1 it was a losing battle. Tough for sure.
  25. TNT1 - I think that is a very clever split - no Martin in TdF TT and Rogers on the Sky Team so couldn't hammer in TdF? Is Vroom in if Wiggo took in too much champers? Outside bet on Phinney or Sparticus? Cuddles too tired I see.
