  1. Best I can do is liquid LPG in gas cylinders; liquid oxygen and hydrogen to power rockets (the moon kind, not Guy Fawkes!). But solid? Glue: gas to sniff, liquid to pour and solid as glue. Hmmm, may not go down that well. Go sit in the corner.
  2. Aaag shampies. Jammer hoooor. Nou strip ek sommer.
  3. Well said Happy M! Barry did this inadvertently with no gain for cycling. He's prepared to take his punishment and I think it takes some guts to keep hitting the ball back on this forum. The Owen Hannie comment is valid. I hope Kranswurm and MooToo are as vocal in their criticism of him as he definitely did it to improve his cycling performance. Shouldn't he be banned for life by your "standards" (which are a bit flexible based on MooToo's attempted dodge above), Finally, and from this occurrence, it would be an interesting exercise to test everyone on say the Epic (bulk buy for Mr Noakes?). How many dopers would be found? 1%, 2%, 5%, 10% or more? .
  4. The squeaky (those that know him will understand) Carlos Esteves is really a disappointment. He's well qualified and should know better or at least offer some solutions. All I can think is that he is looking after his pension and blocking everything in the Mike Sutcliffe tradition. Intransigent, uncaring people like him are one of the many reasons why SA has such a high road death toll (particularly amongst pedestrians); let alone cyclists. I think he views taxis, buses, cars and trucks as his main responsibility in that order; cyclists and pedestrians don't even feature or get any real care. This is depsite eThekwini making a few promising steps earlier on the route from North Beach through Durban North. I measured by bike handlebars - 700mm for a bicycle and just under 1000mm for a motorcycle. My medium sized car is is under 2m wide. There should be enough space for this and a bicycle, even a motor bike, in a 3,5m wide lane.
  5. It's great idea and area with generally good people BUT guys, not something to do on your own or even in a small group. I understand that a guy on a motorbike on his own was shot dead a few days ago a bit east of this area when his bike broke down.
  6. By the way - Scottburgh / Rocky Bay trails closed indefinitely due to washaways. Understandable but pretty much wasted a morning yesterday.
  7. I suspect it's an age thing. In me 20's I rode a dirt bike in a leg cast from a smashed knee and a body cast from a few crushed vertebrae. Both doctors had said "you'll never ride again". I went on and competed in enduro's and the Roof without too much harm. I did do the prescribed exercises. Now I just tweak a finger, hand, foot, knee or back and I'm very cautious. Lives have been used up.
  8. @rudi-h; I think you have to be very, very bad as a lawyer, accountant etc to be stripped of your professional title. TWeed's dog or the proverbial goat comes to mind but even then you may escape with a slap on the whatsit. Normally it's a fine (R10k to R50k) and some sort of suspended sentence for two years say as a first offender. Maybe, but hopefully not, I can tell you more. PI may help pay for any damages caused. As for DG; let him serve his sentence and I cannot see him making a living from cycling again. He no spring chicken. A bit different to plenty other dopers who are (happily?) back in the peloton. But stranger things have happened.

    Rugby...

@Stretch & Flymango - I don't know but believe there was an explanation on Rugby365 as below: "It was a try. The referee awarded the try and the referee is 'the sole judge of fact and Law during a match'. But was his judgement right. He did take advice from the TMO whose scripted advice was: 'You may award the try.' But should it have been awarded? Was the judgement right? Was the Law correctly applied? It is an interesting situation. The Springboks have a five-metre line-out. They look to set a maul on Eben Etzebeth but England repulse it. The Springboks bash and then look to go wide. Ruan Pienaar passes to Juandré Kruger who goes into the tackle but loses the ball backwards. Ben Youngs of England kicks the ball but straight onto JP Pietersen. The ball ricochets off Pietersen and flies forward through the air towards the England goal-line. Ben Morgan of England puts up a hand to the ball but does not catch it. He knocks the ball forward into Willem Alberts's grasp, and the big flank plunges over for a try. The distances may be relevant. Kruger loses the ball backwards before making contact just over five metres from the England line. The ball goes back and is about seven metres from the line when Youngs kicks it. He kicks it upwards and it strikes Petersen above the knee. It flies forward. Morgan, who had been involved at defence near the England line, tries to play the ball. He is then about a metre from the England line. Vermeulen, who had been involved in the attack on the England line, is about a metre further infield from Morgan. The try took the score to 16-6, just enough for the Springboks to win by one point. Was Alberts offside? Law 11 – DEFINITIONS In general play a player is offside if the player is in front of a team-mate who is carrying the ball, or in front of a team-mate who last played the ball. Offside means that a player is temporarily out of the game. Such players are liable to be penalised if they take part in the game. The ball was last played by Morgan, an opponent. Alberts was well in front of Pietersen when Pietersen played the ball but then Morgan played it. Did Morgan's action put Alberts onside? Law 11.3 BEING PUT ONSIDE BY OPPONENTS In general play, there are three ways by which an offside player can be put onside by an action of the opposing team. These three ways do not apply to a player who is offside under the 10-Metre Law. (a) Runs 5 metres with ball. When an opponent carrying the ball runs 5 metres, the offside player is put onside. (B) Kicks or passes. When an opponent kicks or passes the ball, the offside player is put onside. © Intentionally touches ball. When an opponent intentionally touches the ball but does not catch it, the offside player is put onside. Morgan intentionally touched the ball. But then there is this 'under the 10-Metre Law' thing. Law 11.4 OFFSIDE UNDER THE 10-METRE LAW (a) When a team-mate of an offside player has kicked ahead, the offside player is considered to be taking part in the game if the player is in front of an imaginary line across the field which is 10 metres from the opponent waiting to play the ball, or from where the ball lands or may land. The offside player must immediately move behind the imaginary 10-metre line or the kicker if this is closer than 10 metres. While moving away, the player must not obstruct an opponent. Sanction: Penalty kick The 10-metre law is only from a kick. There is an obvious question here: did Pietersen kick the ball? Law DEFINITION Kick: a kick is made by hitting the ball with any part of the leg or foot, except the heel, and from knee to toe, but not including the knee. A kick must move a visible distance out of the hand. First, it seemed that the ball hit Pietersen, rather than vice versa. Secondly, it hit him above the knee. That means that he did not kick the ball at all. Pietrersen did not kick the ball. Morgan played the ball From this it would seem that the it was the correct decision to award the try. But, be fair, it is a lot of information for the referee and his helpers to process."
  10. @BogusOne; you may have a point. I had a Mongoose Canaan Elite and my first frame didn't have a gusset at the seatpost top tube connection. At its first service, I was told it was cracked there (Thank you Mr Minnaar, sir) and a new frame organised with no fuss at all. The new frame had a healthy gusset at that connection. No trouble since and 4 years, a few sani's and b&b's etc or so later.
  11. Da Boss is great - Born to Run. Also Hungry Heart; "Got a wife and kids in Baltimore, Jack / I went out for a ride and I never went back ". Is there a cycling / motorcycling message there?
  12. LL: "I am uplifted, why so glum?". Didn't Obree also suffer from depression just to make his efforts even more impressive? He seemed to have really been treated shoddily by the UCI estbalishment.

    Rugby...

You cannot take SA rugby seriously; it's like a miniature of SA! Racism - too numerous to mention PDivvy, Markgraaf, Straeli/Cronje etc; broedertwis Lions vs Free State vs Bulls; engelse gevaar Luyt vs McIntosh, Oberholzer vs Mallett; plain greed Kings etc; cadre deployment - Heineken! Let's move to powered 2 wheels - an SA lighty beat the best in the world in the Roof of Africa and a S African came 2nd. Now that is great news.

    Rugby...

Not quite Eccy: wasn't he fired for complaining about the price of the tickets? You have to be a bonehead fan to call that "hashing it". Hmmm, but he was a box for listening to Alan "Guinness" Solomons and playing Skinstad.
  15. @Lucky Luke; I think you are on the right track. Some LBS may go or shrink but maybe they'll have to focus on service and expertise to set up, improve and service bicycles and particularly the bits a little tricky for home mechanics like rims, brake internals and shocks. I've had some ridiculously poor service from disinterested lighties at my LBS.
  16. "This too shall pass". KE. I think he must be under big pressure and stress to make this sort of tweet but I feel for him. One day (and test; not directed at KE) at a time.
  17. Hmmm, a shock but not a shock really if you get my drift. KE; like Jens Voigt, I hope not but cannot be sure. LeMond, I'd be surprised if not. He kept pace with the motorbike. From reading the reow Out There article I can understand why doping is almost addictive. It does so much for one, it seems, that it's very hard to do without it.
  18. It would be a big disappointment to me if Jens Voigt were/is/was/could be etc a doper. Armstrong, Wiggins, Cav et al; I'm not too fussed. But did he really not know a la Hincapie, Kimmage etc etc back then?? I'm not even going to think about it.
  19. I am all for this and it's a great pity that there were not more "apprenticeships" around for young people to learn a trade (as well as life skills, discipline and how to work hard) under taught by a skilled craftsman. I like the "No Smoking". Go Johann!!
  20. This is almost unbelievable. Great storey on the service. I hope he gets plenty clients. It's deserved for sure.
  21. I'm Durban and stay off the roads, much as I'd like to ride on them. There are some truly inspirational efforts being made by a few people to make drivers aware and cyclists safe. Hats off to them. Cyclists that behave stupidly and badly detract from these efforts; hence the continual anti cyclist threads (most recently even on Think Bike). In my limited and non legal experience, respect and obedience of, and to, the law is seldom voluntary. It needs enforcement. I have seen and heard that motorists in Aus, Europe and the US respect pedestrians and cyclists somewhat more than in SA as the consequences of killing or injuring a cyclist or pedestrian are generally much more unpleasant than in SA. Legal, civil and social unpleasantness. You get fined, lose your licence or even end up in jail, face punitive damage claims and you (and/or your company) get pilloried in the press, social media etc. PPA are doing something, provincial authorities a little and mational authorities (CSA included) next to nothing. Only cyclists and organisations like PPA can step up their efforts. My vote is for lobbying authorities at all levels then through civil action against organisations that flout the law like Golden Arrow, company drivers personally (object to their driving permits for a start) and motoriists. PPA should also chase these through the media and make drivers (and their companies) aware that, if you kill or injure a cyclist, you will be chased down, exposed and have to fight for your innocence, not just walk away or hide behind platitudes (GA).
  22. Hmm, no "dripping needle" or confession so a very interesting correlation with being done for speeding based on subjective evidence. I know Tumbles says you can get done for drinking and driving without a blood test but I'm surprised. It may that this is why the federal case went away. The USADA may be "balance of probabilities" rather than reasonable doubt. For arbitration I understand that there is no appeal to courts etc unless specifc rules for that arbitration weren't followed. But I'm rather thinking that extending this; anyone who could keep pace with a proven doper, must have been a doper. Ie. the police car that busts you for speeding was following you.
  23. From some other trawling. Apologies if already posted; Lance Armstrong's shadow has released an official statement that "due to recent events it can no longer stand behind him".
  24. Hmmm, I see the WADA man says "everyone doped". http://www.sport24.co.za/OtherSport/Cycling/WADA-chief-Everybody-doped-20121023 who was that pro cyclist who commented on the juiced riders that "he couldn't be expected to keep up with a motorbike". In hindsight, good chirp.
  25. Nice neat job. I've made one hanging type rack and second the comment about supporting the 90 degree bend (I know it looks galvanised now so not easy). The other weak point is the plate on the towbar. I made one with 5mm angle and it bent. My current Holdfast one is 8mm plate and it's bent. The set up looks a bit low. I would angle the rack up 5 degrees or so to clear steep driveways, ditches etc. To my mind the biggest advantage of the Thule type racks is fixing directly to the towbar. But I maybe the 50mm square hitch receiver as in the USA is a good option (if we had more vehicles with it). That may be better than the two bolts that hold the towbar on and avoids the bend.
