  1. Great event organized by Paul and the team. Well worth supporting !
  2. Anyone know where I can get the route profile for this event ? Even of the 2019 event. Should still give a good idea of what to expect.
  3. This ^^^. You do not seem in a hurry, and you already have a decent enough bike at the moment. The joy of building what you like over time is way better than to just buy another one. (in my view at least)
  4. Not moved back, but using both. Cleated on the DS and HT for long rides, but using flats on the SS. Used to be on flats only and always liked it. Use the SS for fun rides, probably limited to 50-60km rides. The flats are still more fun, but I find the cleats make me lazy. Before, bunny hops and small jumps just came naturally, but now I need to focus to not "pull" on the pedals. It sounds like your riding is moving more towards flats. Most important, have fun and enjoy the ride !
  5. I have the first gen STR in SS. Much easier on the body than my Carbon HT. Only use offroad.
  6. Slow down !! Brian Johnson is back in AC/DC, so back to normal, BUT I will not sit idle when anything bad is said about Mr Rose !! True or not. ????????????
  7. We did it in Feb. as part of a Sani2Sea training camp. We also took our wife's, and they enjoyed the trip as well. They went up with the How family in their 4x4. If you do not have people to join you, maybe this is not a bad option for you to do as part of the next Sani2Sea training camp. Nice big group. Not everyone went to the top.
  8. Not sure what size you need, or how tall you are, but I must say, I thought something like this might not be a bad deal if you can get it around R 10,000. It already has everything you might need. Air suspension 1x12 (not needed, but people seem to like it) SRAM GX, so a decent set Tubeless already. https://bikehub.co.za/classifieds/item/hardtail-mountain-bikes/418161/silverback-stride-sx
  9. If the frame size is correct for you, get it and enjoy !
  10. Almost had one of those this weekend . Forgot how to bunny hop on flats.
  11. Very Nice ! It seems you are using the XD freehub. Maybe you can advise TyronLab where to get the parts.
  12. Zinger XD kit will work, but not sure if you will find it in SA. I am sure a shimano freehub should also work on your hub. I know the Rapide freehubs are interchangable.
  13. Thanks. Will try 32/17 as well. Still going to play around with ratios quite a bit to find that “magic” gear.
  14. So, decided to find out what this SS thing is all about. Got the frame (great condition !) and some components from BaGearA on the hub. Collected on Monday. Got some great advice from Jewbacca, Ben Graham, and NSBB on gearing. Thanks ! Ordered rear cogs and chain from Rapide on Monday. Got it on Tuesday. Great service again !! Started with 32/18. Short test ride today (Lunch time).Might go 32/16 So I guess time will tell !!
  15. Thanks for the info so far. Very helpful. I will start with the 30t NW. Will try both 16t and 18t cogs. 16t when I know it will be flatter, and 18t when I know there are some climbing to be done. Now to get everything together and get the bike built !
  16. Just ordered 16 & 18 from Rapide. Will try combinations from 30/16 - 30,18 to 32/16 - 32/18 In Gauteng, so will try with the flatter areas first, and then work my way to the more technical, steeper stuff.
  17. Thanks for the feedback so far. At the moment I have a 30t NW and 32t middle (geared) ring. I think the 30t will be to small, hence my question. Will try both and if I prefer the ratio of the 32t, I will get a 32t NW.
  18. Thanks ! Think I will get a NW ring just to be save.
  19. Sorry to revive an old thread, but need some advise on SS gearing. Always wondered about an SS bike, and finally decided to just build one and see if it as much fun to ride as everyone says. Question is on chainrings. I see people use NW rings. I understand chain dropping etc..., but can a standard (geared) chainring not be used ? - Will not be using a chain tensioner, as the frame will be SS specific.
  20. Surely one ride should be up the Sani pass.
  21. Thanks for the advise Andrew. Decided to get both. The one you suggested and the Visi one. The one you suggested is perfect. Can see what you mean with regards to the Visi, but this one might be better for rain ? Also ordered both in the same size, but the Visi is slightly bigger than the other one. I guess this will allow for more layers.
  22. Thanks Andrew. Will have a look at that one. Maybe one of each is the answer :-) Will wait for the arm warmers to be loaded.
