  1. best spending of PPA money ever! Well done PPA peeps!!!
  2. Best luck Mark! Not only a challenge from a riding perspective but also for the backup team who need to arrange visa's and border crossings (which would take 34 days in itself for mere mortals)
  3. I see mixed category has fallen away :-(
  4. very hardtail friendly (just don't try the middle line on the stairs unless you like having your saddle performing the Heimlich maneuver on you)
  5. As far as I know there isn't a Kona agent in SA but our LBS is approaching them to see if they can import them. Meeting is scheduled for next month so not sure if you're happy to wait a bit.
  6. seriously!
  7. Run continuous cabling housing as well - it may not look the prettiest but it keeps grime out of the gap between cable and housing (excuse how filthy the bike is)
  8. Clicks own brand kiddy sunblock factor 50 - best value for money and doesn't burn the ... out of my eyes. Technibloc is still the best for body though (an always wear uv sleeves - no amount of sunblock seems to work there)
  9. they are a constant reminder that my bike rides in more interesting places than dirt roads Have 2 in front and 1 at the back at the moment.
  10. doesn't allow upload of .kmz file :-( . Pop me your mail address and will send itThe roads are mostly district roads and there is one gate which needs to be kept closed. Farmers in the area are really friendly and there are stacks of cyclists out on the weekend.
  11. If you ride for about 5km past the windmills, take a right turn at the small sign saying "Leewendans". The road takes you in the direction of Klapmuts. The full "Slent" loop from Durbanville is about 65km but there are options to making it shorter or longer. pm if you want a map :-)
  12. Anatomic (wear direct) has the smallest sizes I've seen. They have an outlet in Northgate Island :-)
  13. make sure that you shake your bottle of sealant well before using - you may have only decanted the liquid portion of the stans into your tires leaving the grains behind that seal up the niggly leaks. Also make sure you haven't over tightened the nut on your tubeless valve.
  14. Shoulders are tricky but I'd opt for a good physio sooner rather than later (the kind that gives you a good "ruk and pluk" along with rehab exercises). I had a dislocated shoulder a few years back and the physio said that the sooner you treat a shoulder injury, the greater the chances of a full recovery.
  15. Kenridge is a nightmare between 7:30 and 7:50 - give it a wide berth. I'd love to let my kids ride to Kenridge but there are no bike paths, pavements are clogged with shrubs and there are too many roads to cross.
  16. I started riding to school (2km) when I was 10 and we now live in the same neighbourhood and the kids are at the same school. We've ridden to school twice as a family but while most motorists are very considerate, there are some aggressive and irresponsible drivers (normally 20-25 y.o. driving small cars). Wouldn't it be great if we could have bicycle friendly paths on major routes to schools
  17. Got to love kids spelling - my 7 year old daughter did this one
  18. on a more serious note, have twice had people try to pull me off my bike outside stellies over the last few months (admittedly riding on my own which I don't do anymore), both attempts were by what looked like regular pedestrians who launched themselves at me as I rode past them. With hindsight, I would have had to have my mace in my hand if I had any intention of defending myself with it. Before choosing to ride with a gun, please consider - would it enable you to prevent an attack? - would you be tempted to shoot the attacker as he rides away on your bike? (tempting but you could end up being charged with murder) - what could your gun be used for if it had to be stolen from you in an attack?
  19. Right of way is effectively to get from A to B. What we have here is free loaders that are wanting to ride trails that cost our club members anywhere between R20 000 and R60 000 per km to build. The farmers generally do allow runners to access the jeep tracks across the farms so many do appear to consider their land as also belonging to the community.
  20. I'm first going to check with our membership administrator and make sure none of the "offenders" have taken membership in the last 72 hours. One rogue rider seen on the trail today had his PPA bike board on and details have been requested from the PPA offices. If anybody is in doubt when riding Tygerberg trails: Hooggekraal, Contermanskloof and Meerendal sell day permits. All trails marked as "Members Only" are for the privilege of those whose memberships funded the building of the trails.
  21. I have an interesting spin to this - we have a new trail that has opened in the Tygerberg hills. It is clearly marked as a members only section yet there are lots of names on the strava segment for this trail who are not club members (have compared to latest club database). I know that legally there isn't much I can do but I'd love to give these guys the bad publicity they deserve. What say you hubbers?
  22. So other than Rudy Project, what compares to radar's? (style and fit but better durability)
  23. I carry mace in a readily accessible spot and having had pedestrians try to pull me off my bike twice in the last 6 months, the part you cannot practice for is how to function properly with a surge of adrenalin in the system. Come to the crunch, I find that flight over fight is my natural instinct (despite rehersing what I'd do in the situation numerous times).
