  1. Would they lease older aircraft rather than new ones? From what I understand there are big gains to be made in terms of efficiency and lower operating costs with the more modern twins for the long haul Are they still an only Airbus operation? Bit of a silly move that was, dumping all their Boeings and everything that went with it, it was one of those corrupt deals. btw Air Zim is still flying their 737-100's If it aint bust don't fix it!
  2. When last did SAA land any new birds? They have a bit of catching up to do .. like the A350, what a beautiful aircraft. I've flown a few times in the Singapore Airlines fleet, my fav airline and passenger aircraft. Throw in a few Tigers and its a Win Win,
  3. Anyone monitor the Aviation am hf airbands? Kit? I have a hand held Icom Xceiver from my ppl flying days, but that is a bit cumbersome to use if you want to keep tabs on a couple of bands (like the approach and radar sectors) . but setting up with a SDR dongle and software to scan designated frequencies also got a decent all band discone antenna that must go up on my roof, project is stalled until that is down. The idea is get a headsup on an incoming, then take a look at Flight tracker, then hopefully eyeball the heavy as it floats down on downwind for 03
  4. Those bit have sharp arrow like point so don't go wondering across the tile.
  5. Ditto for the special bits, they are clearly marked for this purpose. And don't put your drill on hammer mode! tiles will crack, no matter what the bit. New toys news: I recently got a Makita plunge track saw, beautiful neat straight cuts every time, great investment. Been cutting a lot of tops and shelves.
  6. Although it could be said he only played music that furthered his and others commercial interests, mostly narrow band formulaic soundalike Pop music. I grew up never knowing soul, blues, punk and more. Also remember those were the days of all-encompassing censorship, for instance I've always enjoyed African jazz but that was simply not on. You could not go to listen to black music anywhere, let alone have a drink and a dance. Much the same could he said for all the other local commercial radio stations: commercial CHEESE Although a few exceptions like first radio DJ that really caught my attention was Neil Johnson late show on 702 in the 80's, when 702 wasn't all talk, Really introduced me to a lot of great music: for example the early days of U2 BBC Radio 1 used to have lot of late night specialist shows (that were on the net) which i really enjoyed but they all got canned. in favor of bright young things. John Peel used to be on every night until he suddenly died (RIP)
  7. Anyone know what's happening with the SAAF Gripen fleet? how many still flying? Who many pilots current? in training? Great aircraft, not so great for SA though IMHO.
  8. One for the fanboys
  9. The Roku is a good solution - its all hooked up for the best res for netflix etc (4K)
  10. Builders is advertising a 18V Makita DPH453RYE kit (drill, case, charger 2x batteries of unknown Ah) for r3k which is a great deal if you want to get onto this platform. At Express and Warehouse branches
  11. I had the Maths module and a few others that escape my memory. Also did some hardware interfacing with the HP IL system
  12. Oh yea My first computer (Sinclair ZX80 didn't count) Although I cut my teeth programming-wise on an HP41C http://www.hpmuseum.org/3qs/410013q.jpg
  13. and this LOL http://www.computinghistory.org.uk/userdata/images/large/6/56/product-90656.jpg
  14. LTE an option? You can get reasonably priced 100GB and 200GB packages now.
  15. In terms of streaming boxes (besides Apple TV) ... anyone using Roku? Cheap android boxes are everywhere but there are limitations like YouTube /Netflix in HD and 4K, Roku seems to be well supported.
  16. So .. the Maputo - Punto road is tarred? I rode that a few years ago when it was loose sand just about all the way .. proper 4x4 fun, wild
  17. Although the practices / concept of Pro Active and Re Active maintenance are alien speak
  18. If its not load shedding its the local substation burning down ... again. Biggest problems are: 1) Jhb City Power can not look after its (and the publics) assets 2) The barely skilled clueless BEE sub contractors they keep sending out to fix problems often just create more problems with their lack of skills, knowledge, insight, workmanship etc 3) No quality control of said sub contractors or follow up to ensure work has been done to the codes & basically acceptable standards. It's a total mess and getting worse every day. Above fire was caused by BAD connections made on replacement feeder cable (twisted together, no crimp or other type of lug) after it was looted because they cant get a system together to keep it locked. Problems like these have been going on for years but its really getting bad now .. yet the BEE show continues. Look at the board of City Power and tell me how many industry experienced Elec or other Engineers there are? Although I can tell you who the madame chairperson is: one who comes from the Social Sciences and who operates on Ideology alone.
  19. jeez tried to drink a Castle Light with lunch yesterday for lack of alternatives .. think I will stick to urine mixed with Jayee's Fluid.
  20. esp. kuk beer - in fact never a good thing.
  21. Yes I mention them because of the contrast to his Mr Nice Guy role in Cheers, esp. NBK,which is essential viewing imho
  22. Where's the star of the show Woody? Did you see him in "No Country for Old Men" ,,,, and ... "Natural Born Killers"
  23. Collecting art is an art Got a few thousand CD's but my vinyl collection is not that big but I am suitably equipped with a SL1210 and tube preamp nogal. I have some cassettes that are collectable imho as well. And the first thing I do/did when I got CD was rip it. I've also digtised some of my older VHS tapes that really were unique or important. Shared some with the world on YouTube but they keep hitting me with strikes. So ja, totally digital since the early days of mp3. I had a great stereo Teac VHS machine which heads expired, impossible to get service here, so I keep scouring the pawn shops for a decent HiFI VHS machine.
  24. Bit of shame that media is virtual now - are the days of being a collector of tangible touch & feel stuff over? Album covers and inserts, a thing of the past. I still have a collection of original VHS - fav films, doccies and such. Then when DVD came out and became standardised, I updated some to that media (like all the editions of Blade Runner), then Blu Ray ... now with UHD being the dogs bollox I'll stick to the torrents, having forked out several times for the same titles.
  25. Days b4 video tapes - used to hire films n verbotten TV stuff on 16mm + projector - back in the day when Dallas, The Brady Bunch en wielie walie were the staple on SAUK of which only Faulty Towers seems to feature in my memory porn 'came' on Super 8 from the lady in the hardware store in the local mall
