  1. As a few have mentioned watch out for overuse injuries with all that garden running. Lots of sharp turns so tight hips which could transfer into ITB issues. And other issues.
  2. I wonder what the rules will be in SA and I wonder if the ability exists to actually enforce the lockdown? The U.K. has announced much stricter measures which is in effect a lockdown. I wonder if SA will have the same ruling to the U.K. who will allow one exercise activity per day, not in groups but it can be with those you are living with?
  3. They knew about in November already
  4. As long as someone drives along the whole route blasting chariots of fire it'll be worthwhile
  5. Lack of water again? Saw Jenna Challenor was directed the wrong way in the 21 but still won it.
  6. If Comrades goes the same way I will still run it.
  7. From 1500m runner to ultra runner. Comrades next. Will be interesting
  8. Such a pity. I was looking forward to seeing him perform at Comrades
  9. I feel the same. One possible issue I see is he might be a bit over raced coming into Comrades. Looks like he has some very big events coming up. However much one might say you'll "take it easy" and treat the race as a training run its very difficult to do properly sometimes. There's a reason why we don't see a huge amount of our top contenders and winners in the buildup to Comrades.
  10. How do you think Ben will shape at Comrades?
  11. I'd imagine he was giving it a shot. Saturday's trials event was a race where only the top 3 make the Olympics. Finish time doesn't matter. Galen Rupp was pretty dominant out front. Was a great race for 2nd and 3rd. Jake Riley is an unsponsored athlete and came through in 2nd just ahead of 43 year old Abdi Abdirahman who will be going to his 5th Olympics.
  12. Jim Walmsey finished 22nd in the US Olympic trials marathon on Saturday in 2h15. Not bad for a debut marathon. As far as this years Comrades contenders go it'd place him right up there in terms of Marathon time. 2h15/16/17 ish on the marathon is a good place to be if you're trying to win the big one.
  13. A little race report from the last couple weeks. Decided to find some warmer weather further south in Europe. First up was the Barcelona 21k two weekends ago. My first time in the city and really enjoyed it. The temperature was top class at about 20 degrees so it reminded me a bit of Durban in the winter. People eat late in Spain, often around 10pm, so it's very festive on the streets in the evenings with tapas bars very popular. The race is a big one and considered a fast course. Around 23000 entrants I believe but surprisingly very little in the way of a race expo. With a niggly calf in the days leading up to the run I wasn't expecting much at all and didn't even have a goal time in mind. Just ran a steady pace and finished up in a bit over 1h21. If I had the sub 1h20 goal in my mind before I think I could have achieved this. A few minutes off my 21k PB so I'd like to give a good go at a 21 later in the year. Calf was very tight afterwards so I was a bit concerned about how it would be in the following days. The number of quicker runners was incredible compared to your typical race in SA. Hundreds of people finishing under 1h22 - I think I was around 800th. A friend from SA smashed his previous PB and finished in 1h14. He only just snuck in with a top 300. It was back up to colder parts of Europe for a few days before making the trip down to Sevilla, Spain for the Sevilla marathon this past weekend. Again the weather was lekker. Sunshine and low 20s as the day went on. The route is regarded as a very fast one with no climbs besides one underpass and not too many turns. The field was around 14000. My calf was feeling good again and I had done a few runs prior to raceday. It was always going to be treated as a decent Comrades training run so I figured if I sat with the sub 3 group and see how that went that'd be okay. I only decided on this strategy the day before really. Besides 2 pee stops an the first 12ks the k's were ticking by quite comfortably. With the sub 3 group through 21ks in 1:29:24. At about 5kms to go I was feeling fresh so picked up the pace a little to finish strong in 2:56:44 so a good little 2min negative split. Any marathon is hard, even a flat one, but I finished feeling like I had a whole lot more in me and nowhere near as tired as my first sub 3 in 2018. Met a few South Africans briefly afterwards. Seems like everyone had some solid results and or decent training runs for Comrades. One of the chaps from Wanderers smashed a 2h36!! Overall two good weekends away. Now to find a hilly event to at least get some hill training in.
  14. Sub 2, although incredible, was hardly an event for the masses or something that could be used for comparison purposes. But then again Formula 1 isn't exactly a mass participation sport like running or soccer either. Eliud is doing London marathon. Kenenisa Bekele also running.
  15. What condition are your shoes in?
  16. For Comrades? If so I think a 65-70k long run is excessive and unnecessary. A 50-60k (tops) long run is sufficient for Comrades. Unless you're gunning for a solid silver then a longer run perhaps.
  17. Nike Next % is 40mm heel height with a 8mm drop (avg stack height 36mm)Nike 4% is 39mm heel height with a 10mm drop The new Adidas prototype that was spotted at Houston marathon looks like a serious stack height. Probably more than the Nike?
  18. Gerda Steyn smashed it at the Dubai 10km today. 1st place for the 3rd year in a row in 32:24
  19. Those top paddlers are incredible athletes. Watching them unleash on the running sections, with a boat on their shoulder and through some seriously technical and steep terrain is a treat.
  20. If stack height is likely to be the factor between a yay or nay on shoe approval then I doubt these will be approved if the Next % are right on the limit
  21. Incredible athlete! Didn't even have a carbon plate in his shoes in those days Jackie Mekler talks about him in his book "Running Alone".
  22. Serious sour grapes from the Brits after Radcliffe's record was smashed.
  23. Ben Parkes targeting a strong finish at Comrades. That pace would have him finish close to the gold positions. I wonder if he'll be in Nedbank International colours?
  24. Nothing wrong with running in the rain in SA temperatures (even on rainy days in SA it's quite warm). It's when you need to run in the rain in near freezing conditions where things become a struggle.
