  1. I tend to agree with that. A 42 just two weeks before your goal Marathon isn't a good idea. There is a reason why most runners, SA runners being the exception, only aim at 1 or 2 marathons a year.
  2. Anyone here doing Mandela Marathon/21/10? I'm seeing stories that the registration is badly run...no tshirts when everyone is meant to get a tshirt. Also heard that the water etc for water tables hasn't been delivered and there may be no refreshments on Sunday??
  3. I sent a query through to Boldgear. Have received a response saying their shorts do not have a lining. They sell their lining as a separate garment.
  4. Do you know if their running shorts have a lining (onderbroek)?
  5. Had a look at their site. Look like nice products
  6. Horrible accident. The g forces on the folk inside must have been unbelievable, probable to the point of blacking out. Having operated the Airvan for a while I think it's a solid aircraft. Basic in terms of design but very much a decent machine and serves its purpose well.
  7. If anyone has a GPS running watch you are not using that you'd consider selling please give me a shout. Even if you have an old stopwatch that you no longer use that would also work. I am on the look out for one or two watches for some runners who are unable to buy their own.
  8. Couldn't find the pic of the adidas athlete. Here's one of a New balance athlete trying to play tricks
  9. I certainly agree the shoes can make a difference for most. At the level of Kipchoge and the few capable of running sub 2h05 marathons, (there have been 9 in 2019 thus far), a sub 2h10 could perhaps be achieved in something like the Nimbus?? It'd be an interesting test that is for sure. In the build up to the 2017 Berlin Marathon, Kipchoge and his group were running "hard long tempo" 40ks in 2h13, and 40ks on a hard xc course in 2h15. This all at altitude during weeks of big mileage. Class.
  10. Interesting. Likely that the majority of athletes at Olympics will still be wearing Nike though.
  11. "The runner is a friend of a friend of mine. He has 'Stretch', his nickname, written on his number." ???? Hubbers are everywhere these days, even getting mentions in top selling books???? (Pg 147 The Rise of the Ultra Runners). Good story of Comrades in the book.
  12. Jenna Challenor has turned down her selection to the world 50km champs taking place in September in Romania
  13. What about the Nike South Africa stores?
  14. I think he'll feature at the sharp end of Comrades but I've got a feeling he'll have to do something special to beat the regular contenders.
  15. Karkloof 100 Miler have announced a $5000 bonus to the first man to break 15 hours and the first lady to break 16h30 https://karkloof100.co.za/big-jackpot-reveal/
  16. Thanks to those who commented on my query on running Karkloof 50 Miler. I think at this stage I'll not take part as it falls during an important period of training for New York. I'll likely only do New York once anyway.
  17. Question on Karkloof 50 Miler. I am tentatively looking at Karkloof 50 Miler a its a race I've been wanting to do for a while and is a home race. Comrades went okay too so I've got that base already. I've only dabbled in the odd trail run but have been sticking to the road generally. Karkloof is on 21 September, but the race I've already got an entry for is New York Marathon taking place 6 weeks later on 3 November. My training over the next few months will be geared towards running a solid time at New York. My question is whether you think running Karkloof will be detrimental to my Ney York goals? I'm inclined to think it will be. If I were to run Karkloof I'd probably end up running fairly hard so it wouldn't be anywhere near a very long relatively easy effort.
  18. Have watched a few of his videos. He's a very good runner. Liked how he ran London Marathon doing a fair bit of filming on the way and still ran a 2h35
  19. Have been looking through the Comrades results. Great performance by Doris Fisha in the ladies race. Started in G batch and finished in 24th overall in 7h20. It took her 7min30 to cross the start line.
  20. Well done to everyone who ran Comrades! To all those that finished very well done and to those who might not have finished we'll see you at the next one. I enjoyed the day out and was chuffed with my result. I was hoping to, and had planned on running for a silver. Started out in A batch so crossed the line a matter of a few seconds. Very soon there were B, C, D batch runners flying past. I guess most of them faded into nothing further down the road? Stuck to my required pace nicely and felt comfortable and was slightly ahead through my first few splits. Went through half way spot on and carried on. It was from about 55-60ks that I started slowing and found I was battling to run the required pace per km to be in with a shot at that silver. For nutrition I had arranged for a few spots to collect Maurten drink mix and Maurten gels and a few rice cakes I had made (as used by cycling teams), so the nutrition worked out well. Only had water from tables and a few cokes at the last few tables. It was probably from 25ks out where a combination of my mind and body decided that silver wasn't likely. It then became a matter of soldiering on as best as possible and keep moving forward and hopefully get below 8hrs. The legs were very tired at this stage. Decided that I would do my utmost to run the entire Pollys which I did, although it was more of a shuffle and wasn't much faster than those walking Those last few Kms were seriously tough. When the silver gun went off I was just short of 3 kms from the finish. Running into finish area was special. Saw my folks at the start of the dirt road. Was caught on tv blowing a snot bomb and was on tv for the whole dirt stretch, through the tunnel and onto the finish straight. Running that uneven green mat was interesting and being on the finish straight with only a few runners around was lekker. At the end of the day I finished my third Comrades and did 7h44. It was a 44 minute improvement from last year and a big 2h54 improvement from my first up run where I was reduced to walking for the last 20 or so ks due to a sore groin. Really enjoyed actually running the finish this year With some work I think I can nail the silver so that'll be the goal for next year.
  21. In the men's race there may be a serious new challenger. 100km World record holder, Nao Kazami, who is from Japan, may be lining up on 9 June. (This according to a tweet by The Running Mann). Interesting indeed
  22. How do you think Chrissie Wellington will do? Might not have the pure ultra marathon pedigree but I think the fact she has been Ironman World Champ 4 times could see her up there towards the front end? She ran a 2h52 at London marathon, which is a lot slower than the other ladies.
  23. I have the Aonijie Withwind 5L. I purchased two at the same time - the green 2018 version and the older model red one. Purchased both on Aliexpress at the same time and they came with the two soft flasks and 2l bladder. Very decent hydration pack for the price. Very comfortable and fits all that's needed for a longish run. The only issue is the clips/strap across the chest on the green model that tend to loosen up a bit while running, but not a train smash. The flow out of the mouthpiece on the bladder is also a bit less than a Camelback bladder. If you aren't in a rush it's worth a shot buying on Aliexpress. Generally the shipping takes ages but if you don't receive an item you can get your money back. I recently purchased a Salomon S-Lab Sense Ultra 5 running vest for a great price in the U.K. Can fit two flasks and a few other pockets for other odds and ends. Fantastic piece of kit. Not sure if I would buy one at their normal selling price though.
  24. That "5 minute faster qualification standard" has thrown a spanner in the works
