  1. Exactly. Seeing some of the extravagant warmups at races is always an eye opener.
  2. All depends on what his goal is. If it's just a finish then 80km a week at this stage is almost certainly too much. If it's silver then it's a different story
  3. New York Marathon was really lekker. Fantastic organization and the support along the route is incredible. There are very few places on the route without a crowd. The bridges are the only real quiet spot. Weather was very cool to start with whilst waiting for the start so remember those old blankets and clothes to throw away. But for running the weather was fantastic. A little bit windy in parts but not terrible. I wouldn't consider the course to be fast compared to say Berlin. The bridges are long and have quite a slope to them and a number of the roads have a gentle uphill gradient which drains the energy a bit. Water tables are well stocked with water and Gatorade (no plastic sachets of course so practice drinking out the cups), and a number of stations have gels. The Vaseline on a stick is not some new energy product so take note of the message on the stick "please do not eat". I was a bit worried with the speed that people start off at but if you stick to your pace you'll pass people at a rapid rate later in the race. My run went according to plan. Stuck to my pace and went through half way right on plan in a few seconds over 1h27. Was hoping to finish strong and gain some time in the last 10 or so kms but it wasn't to be so the second half was 7 seconds faster Crossed the line in 2:53:57 for a new PB. After missing out on a Boston spot for 2020 I'm hoping I'll get in now for 2021. For those who've thought of running New York I'd definitely recommend it.
  4. Top class run by Gerda. New York isn't exactly a quick course like Berlin so I think she can smash the SA record on a fast course. A few South Africans met up in Central Park on Saturday morning for a run with Gerda. She was very relaxed and confident for the race. An incredible person and an asset to the SA running community.
  5. The prize money at most of the ultra trail runs is nothing like that on offer at Comrades.
  6. I have the Pegasus 36 Trail. Have only used them once but they are similar to the Pegasus 35/36 road shoe. Probably a good option as a fairly light trail shoe for basis off-roading. Do you need the Gore Tex version though?
  7. He makes some good videos. A really good runner he is. I hope he achieves his goal of around 2h20 in his next marathon. Probably Frankfurt as he stopped at half way in Berlin in about 1h09. Did you see in one of his recent videos he hinted that he's looking to run Comrades next year?
  8. A friend of mine swears by a product called Generation Ucan. Also makes a paste out of their powder.
  9. I use them. Normally only on long runs or races. It's water all other times. I've always been super nervous of what I drink during a run and normally just resort to water but have found the Maurten drink mix really good. I used to drink 32Gi and it resulted in pit stops. The Maurten drink is really easy to take in and easy on the stomach. I also use the Maurten gel. Never been a fan of gels but the Maurten is just so easy to digest.
  10. Berlin Marathon nutrition supplier, ultraSports had beetroot based gels at one of the tables and also betroot energy drink. Was surprisingly good.
  11. How long was the ultra? How much time off did you have afterwards?
  12. Compared to the entry price for South Africans I suppose it's quite a difference. It's about $250 which is close to or cheaper than other big city marathon foreign entry fees. New York is $358 for non-US runners. Plus you get up to 12 hours of value at Comrades
  13. So why aren't the athletes who Salazar and Brown worked with also get banned/charged?
  14. No news yet A friend of mine who was 12min under standard also hasn't heard anything. Are you making a bit of a holiday out of it?
  15. Not yet. I've done Chicago and Berlin. New York coming up in November.
  16. Exactly. With the previous standard (2019 Boston) I was over 4 minutes under but they then reduced the standard required by 3 minutes for 2020.
  17. Well done! How far below standard were you? I submitted my details on Monday but with just over 1min below standard I'm not expecting any news.
  18. Gerda Steyn raced in the Middlesbrough 10km in the U.K. today. She klapped it, winning the race (for the 3rd year in a row) and got a new 10k PB running 33:05. New York Marathon in November should be very very interesting
  19. Stephen Mokoka ran a 59min51s 21k in Buenos Aires yesterday. Breaking a 22 year old SA record set by Hendrick Ramaalah and becoming the first South African to run under 60min on a standard 21k course. In the same race Glenrose Xaba became the third South African woman to run under 70 minutes for 21km, runnning 1:09:44 (the other two who have run sub 70min are Elana Meyer and Colleen de Reuck.
  20. A few might be aiming to qualify for Olympics if they can. And I'm not sure if ASA provides much in the way of support?
