  1. I like your optimism but I don't think she stands any chance of winning or getting anywhere close to the medals. I actually think even qualifying is a very long shot despite having until the end of June to qualify. Her time today puts her way down in 51st on times this year for the 5000m. Sub 15min is more around the time to be anywhere near the top.
  2. In an Olympic year (202One) why are ASA having the champs at altitude in Pretoria? Can anyone explain the logic?
  3. Gerda Steyn smashed Colleen de Reucks 25 year old SA marathon record (Berlin Marathon 1996 2:26:35) in Italy today. (Note. Elena Meyer ran 2:25:15 at the 1994 Boston Marathon but it's not considered official as its an aided course). Gerda ran 2:25:28 to finish in 9th. Brilliant!! Irvette van Zyl ran a PB and Olympic qualifier in 2:28:40 finishing 13th.
  4. Sling Aircraft, a truly local is lekker global success story within the aviation circles, have started producing bicycles. Sling Aircraft are really fantastic aeroplanes as I'm sure those who have flown one would agree. The Sling Cycles Tagati looks to be a titanium frame, gravel/multi purpose machine. https://www.slingaircraft.com/news/introducing-the-sling-cycles-tagati/
  5. What about Inov8? They have around a 3mm drop. Something like the Terraultra G270?
  6. To add a small note to my post. I'm not saying the data isn't valuable. It can be and can be a valuable tool for improvement. But it shouldn't necessarily be the primary focus when one is starting off and becoming more familiar with regular running. Becoming more in tune with your body and learning what it's going through can be done largely without all the data. Finding enjoyment in running is more important in my view (in the same breath though, like some have said, maybe that enjoyment is found in the data and there's nothing at all wrong with that). A very valid point was made by Wayne about that fine line between monitoring data for improvement vs obsessing over it.
  7. Agreed 100%. Running is a simple sport and should be kept that way as much a possible. Let's not baffle ourselves with all sorts of data. At the end of the day it's about you and the road/trail/track etc. To see improvement it's a slow steady build up over time. Consistency is so important. Numbers don't change this fact much.
  8. Definitely not everyday runners those Saucony But like you said you prefer daily running in a fast shoe. Each to his own but I just prefer (and I'm sure it's the same for many others) leaving fast shoes for specific fast runs and almost as an award for races. And then daily running in things like Pegasus, Nimbus, 1080s, Ghosts etc. and maybe a faster shoe for tempo runs/intervals (but still not the race shoe). It does make a difference on 'race day' when you whip out the racers rather than running in such types all the time. Nicely done on the 5km! I'm sure you already know it but be careful of falling into the trap of trying to run a route or distance quicker all the time. Over the long term it won't pay off and you will get frustrated and see little improvement. It took me a while to learn it myself. Running slower (in general combined with focused interval type running) to run faster. That is what works. Some of the more experienced runners here would more than likely have found the same at some stage in their development. Edit to add: for the easy runs (and workout runs too) find a route that is as flat as possible. No hills or gradient at all if possible. It's very difficult in most parts of SA of course but it does help to be able to run a consistent equal effort without having to go up and down gradient. One might think oh it's just an easy run I'll just go slowly up this little hill. Often this is difficult to achieve in reality. A treadmill is an option to consider for such efforts like easy jogs or tempo etc.
  9. I do. They're on 150km now and still very fresh. But I'm limiting use to speed work and tempo and faster runs rather than general day to day runs. I personally won't use them for a LSD type run really except when they start getting on in mileage. I would think they'll be in great condition still after 600/700km or perhaps even more?
  10. As mentioned by GrantMcD the Saucony Endorphin Speeds are awesome shoes. Real quality. Not as an everyday shoe though. Rather for speed workouts and faster runs.
  11. Parkrun in South Africa is still not happening. Most of the Parkruns in SA have over 250 participants so that's an issue with restarting. You must have seen something else taking place?
  12. Gosh. Glad mine last a bit later. Wouldn't want to get a new pair every month and a half
  13. Some Nike Air Zoom Alphafly Next% for sale in the classifieds if anyone is looking
  14. He should have just joined Joshua and the lads in Monaco today
  15. Like all MTB events became not long after MTB started growing quickly. The Epic a good example????
  16. Trail races can be organised for a fraction of the cost of a road run. As soon as one needs to use public roads the costs are astronomical. I agree with Stretch. Trail running is fun. However when it comes to organised trail events it seems to become a bit of a show off thing for those participating.
  17. Even if you don't attend your running club and prefer running alone that's perfectly fine. But please join and support your running clubs. Without the running clubs we'd be in a far far worse position in regards to the running environment in SA. To me a running club is far more than the running. Even though I prefer running alone and generally always do so, that weekly meetup (maybe more at other clubs) at the clubhouse is so important. It's about the social side and getting to know people who have a common interest regardless of abilities. It's about learning from the seniors and encouraging beginners. It's about community (something seriously lacking in society). Getting involved with the club race is something everyone should do too. Maybe then some might realise what goes into a race rather than complain about everything on social media. For a nominal fee I have gained so much from the club environment and I'm sure for many it's the same. Get involved and you might find it's quite fun. If your club does a monthly or weekly time trial go participate. You can run alone if that's what you prefer. But please try stay for a cooldrink/water/beer etc afterwards.
  18. In 2019 ASA revenue from membership was R6.6mil. Would be very interesting to see their financials for 2020. As far as what they do with the money. A big spend is on salaries, travel, and food. And highly doubt much of this is on athletes. Not surprising really. Upliftment of the sport is something I am yet to see in any form. Please support your running club and join them. It's a separate membership to ASA and the provincial bodies as has been pointed out. It's very very important that clubs are kept strong and supported. Clubs are the backbone of running in SA and pull a lot of the weight of the various bodies.
  19. Expected. Seems like ASA failed to attend two CMA meetings from what I've heard. Yet again another poor show. With ASA licenses available who will actually get one for 2021?
  20. With a popcorn maker? Don't shoot me. I was with a friend when he decided to roast beans
  21. Very fair points. With zero qualifying races thus far and none on the horizon it's surely not possible for Comrades to go ahead. ASA and its associated provincial bodies like KZNA must be one of the most disappointing sporting bodies in SA. Almost no effort to get any form of racing to happen. Unlike other sporting bodies. When income dries up then we'll hear the sob stories. As far as taking part if it were to happen. Each to his own but I would.
  22. Have a pair and pushed them probably way too far but still find the flyknit super comfortable. Sitting at 2007km in the Flyknits. I know I know. Not ideal at all but had to cut back on running shoe spend in a big way in 2020 so have run too many miles in all my shoes. Can't really compare the Zoom Fly 3's (which I also have) with the Zoom Fly Flyknits at all. Just not the same. I really need to find another pair of flyknits but not too easy.
  23. And at the same time check out the prices at Poobie Naidoos on their online shop or give them a call. Their regular prices are almost always cheaper than the Sportsmans special prices.
  24. Live stream of Kilian Journet's 24hr track record attempt. Starts at 11.30am SA time. Current record is 303.506km by Yiannis Kouros set in 1997.
  25. Agreed. A bit uncertain how it'd be viewed here in NL though.
