Anyone want one from over the seas?
  2. Can't stand it when people walking their dogs can't control them. When the dog chases me and yaps away at my legs and the owner does nothing to reprimand their dog. Not impressed.
  3. New Santa Cruz XC team maybe? Seen there are some rumours.
  4. Shocking. There is no doubt a significant amount of doping going on. And at the same time there is very little testing going on.
  5. Was thinking the same. The way I see it is there only a handful of runners in SA achieving these times regularly. Racing four marathons a year is a lot. And those that are getting anywhere close to these times are highly likely sponsored on Elite setups. Sure there are a number of marathon runners who are quicker but they also want Comrades athletes. A comparison on what some of the sponsored setups offer vs what Under Armour are offering would be interesting.
  6. Anyone here the next Under Armour Elite runner? Thoughts? https://www.modernathlete.co.za/2020/10/are-you-the-next-under-armour-elite-runner/
  7. Stretch have you joined your local club on interval training sessions at all? Maybe you experienced similar to me if you have? I went to a few sessions last year in the Netherlands and found them rather focussed particularly with focus on warming up, stretching, and drills, pre the track session. All of this with a designated trainer as it's requirement for track sessions. These sessions are by no means for top athletes only as all abilities take part. From the little bit I've seen at various events in Europe, running groups place a lot of emphasis on the warm up pre the event. Very interesting to see how focussed some of the groups are. Massive contrast to some events I've done in SA where the regular runners literally arrive at the start as the race is already starting. Of course some running clubs in SA might be similar in terms of track sessions and proper warming up etc but probably not really focussed on the amateur runner? I'm all for the social aspect of running sessions for all abilities, but at the same time the warm up and drills etc are super important for injury prevention. Going from regular session after session of regular single paced running to smashing out intervals is a recipe for disaster. It takes a very different focus and preparation.
  8. Think the chest strap is generally more accurate, particularly with less lag (intervals etc) compared to wrist. Think I recall D.C. rainmaker dojg some in depth comparisons. I've been getting very erratic HR readings lately (Garmin Forerunner 235 wrist HR). Quite irritating. It'll show I'm running in the easy or low aerobic zones which is normal on the easy runs and then all of a sardine it'll change to high threshold and more often to maximum. Has massive jumps too during tempo or intervals. I'm wondering if it might be interference from the gloves or sleeve of arm warmers or jacket if it's raining but I do try keep them out the way as much as possible? The massive jump also seems to happen on runs in the rain. Anyone else experienced similar?
  9. Agreed. Makes those few from SA who make it to the top of their game on a world level even more impressive.
  10. That's for sure. He definitely appears to have the skills and the support. No doubt it now comes down to spending as much time as possible racing in Europe. Who is helping him out in terms of mentorship etc?
  11. Focused more on Enduro I think. He was in Europe for a few EWS.
  12. Agreed. Where will it end. Just now we'll have the altitude Comrades qualifier events using reductions on their times. A real race it should be if results are the desire. A virtual event should not be for results.
  13. Did anyone follow the Cape Town marathon elite races on the weekend? Some impressive runs. Based on a formula developed by Dr Ross Tucker, "adjusted times" that take into account the altitude at different race venues (Potchefstroom, Pretoria, Cape Town), the final results were produced. I've added a pic explaining the time adjustments. Bongmusa Mthembu ran a 2:17:31in Cpt so no adjustment and finished tied 4th. Edward Mothibi smashed it in Potchefstroom with a 2:16:48 but this was adjusted to 2:13:11 to win overall. Phillimon Mathibi was in Pretoria and ran 2:18:29 but adjusted to 2:14:49. This is the part I'm not sure I agree with. There is no doubt that times will be quicker at sea level but deciding a race outcome based on a formula reminds me a bit too much of how the Proteas got knocked out of the World Cup cricket because of a formula nobody understands (Duckworth Lewis). Why was the event actually held at three venues? Wouldn't Cape Town have worked for an elites only race? Thoughts?
  14. Van Der Poel to CFR. Imagine that. Jokes. No road option with that move
  15. Great Giro stage win for Ben O'Connor. Likely too little too late in terms of saving the team. But a good step for Ben in picking up a good ride next year.
  16. https://youtu.be/f173FH_wEx0 Sorry if it's been posted already.
  17. Tratnik was clever. Did very little work once caught. Ben closed the gap super quickly on the climb - perhaps an immediate attack once he caught Tratnik would have beeen a better tactic? 20/20 Hindsight and all that.
  18. As they always have done. I doubt Covid changed much in that regard. Life goes on. What probably did help was the group structure would have been more steady for longer periods without many of them travelling all over the world for racing at different times.
  19. I would hope the quick times are due to the athletes being much fresher with far less racing in their legs...but realistically I think this is a bit of wishful thinking.
  20. Great running by the SA men - 5th place in the team classification. Top class 7th place and New SA record for Stephen Mokoka in 59:36. PB and 14th for Lesiba Mashele 60min24s PB and 23rd for Collen Mulaudzi 60min51s GB runner Tom Evans ran a PB of 63min14s - Tom was third at Western States in 2019 breaking the record for the quickest time for an overseas runner in 14h59. Interesting to see his transition to road.
  21. The number of ladies with PBs. Wow.
