  1. Update to above. Purchased a pair of New Balance Zante V3s a few weeks ago. So far finding them brilliant. Good fit and being a reasonably light shoe have found them well suited to the quicker runs.
  2. Echinaforce Echinacea drops flat out plus Natura Combin Assist tissue salts (coughs and colds combin). If that doesn't work, which it does 9/10 times, then Vicks medinite (over the counter) at night.
  3. Thank you. I'll also look at the options you suggested.
  4. I'll be looking at replacing my Asics Nimbus 19s in a few months. Haven't enjoyed them nearly as much as the previous Nimbus and Cumulus models so am therefore looking at alternative brands. Looking for a neutral shoe and it doesn't necessarily have to have as much cushioning or drop (?) but could be a "faster" shoe for up to marathons. In fact would prefer a lighter faster shoe. Am tempted to try New Balance but not sure which model. Also looking a bit at Adidas. Any suggestions?
  5. Post Comrades I decided to have a short run this past Thursday and also attempted a run on Saturday. Saturday's run I ended up walking as my ITB started giving issues. This is the same ITB that was swollen after Comrades due to compensating for my sore groin. The body felt good but clearly things have not healed properly. It's frustrating as the motivation is there to start training but I know that more rest is needed In fact the motivation to run was there before I even finished Comrades... probably because the event didn't go as I wanted - being forced into a walk for much of the second half.
  6. I agree with you there. There's so much (possibly too much) focus on Comrades, and all the training that goes with it, that we tend to forget what it is to run a hard marathon/21 etc. because we are ultimately too worried about the big day.
  7. I disagree on running a fast marathon so late (April and especially May)- it's too close to Comrades and may not be enough recovery time. "Fast" being relative to each individual, it does take a lot out of you even though it might not feel like it as you will be strong at that stage of your Comrades training. Personally I don't see much point in breaking oneself just to improve seeding by a batch.
  8. Very interesting. Are you on the Banting diet? From what I understand those on the Banting diet are able to do ultras etc on water, the occasional rehidrat and nuts and biltong etc without issue? Personally I believe that gels are generally not great and some folk take far too many gels. My Comrades included a few rehidrates, water, one or two jelly babies and one farbar and fastbar. A handful of biltong and a few cokes in the last 30kms. Zero energade was consumed. I did take a potato out of a bowl but it was horribly slimy so that was the end of potatoes fo the day : )
  9. I'm also hoping to get as close as possible to a 1h30 21km. My closest is 1h34. I'm capable of sub 20 Parkrun so I guess it's a matter of converting. The base is now there after Comrades but really need to focus on my speed now.
  10. Congrats on the BR! I was running with someone from the start till about 47kms where I struggled with running from there on due to my groin issues, who ended up running almost identical splits for his BR. We crossed halfway in about 4h29 so great pacing by him!! What we did notice was how fast the first sub 9hr bus (almost certain it was the sub 9 bus) seemed to be running?? They stormed up Cowies and were motoring through the early parts of Pinetown where we moved to the side so they could get past us. At the time I was concerned many of the "passengers" were not aware of how quickly they were going. Talking of positive splits I thought mine was impressive at 1h40 : ) ...I really wanted to run but couldn't
  11. Completed my first Comrades. What a fantastic event. The spirit on the route is awesome! I was running on Bill Rowan pace and went through half in about 4h29 intending to run Bill Rowan or as close as possible to it. All was going well until my groin started niggling slightly in the 30s. I thought it would be temporary but not to be. Tried to stick with the last sub 9 bus in the 50s but running was becoming rather uncomfortable so from there on it was mostly walking till the finish...walked the last 12 or so kms Was frustrating watching everyone running past but at the same time I got to take in the terrific support on the side of the road. No negative splits here...second half took me about 6h10 to finish in 10h38 Glad I pushed on to finish as quitting wasn't an option. Well done to everyone who participated- Comrades is a truly special event and something everyone should attempt.
  12. What sort of prices are the hoodies/jerseys?
  13. Agree with the above posters. Drive the route if you wish but NOT the day before. Thursday or Friday at the latest.
  14. Has anyone here made anything out of African Blackwood/ African Ebony? I have two pieces which I haven't found a use for. I'd imagine it's best used by those making rifle stocks or knife handles?
  15. How many folk will be traveling to the Comrades start from the Midlands area (Pmb/Hilton/Howick etc) on the morning of the race? Or are the majority of runners staying in the Durban area? Am in two minds about trying to find a place in Durban - maybe wishful thinking at this stage- for the Saturday night or stay in my own bed and lose an hour of sleep.
  16. No sub 7hr bus driver :-) That is disappointing :-)
  17. Erratum Message: Yesterday we posted that Deirdre Larkin of Randburg Harriers broke the 85+ World Half Marathon Record at the Geneva Marathon this past weekend, smashing her own record of 2:12:37 (run in SA in February) with a new WR of 2:05:13. Unfortunately, additional research shows that the Geneva Half Marathon is not a "record-legal course," as it is a point-to-point course with a significant overall drop in altitude of more than two metres per kilometre, so Deirdre's time of 2:05:13 cannot be considered a World Record. For a course to be record-legal, it must be circular (start and finish within a certain distance of each other) and drop no more than the allowable 1m/km. Her performance remains a remarkable, hugely inspiring achievement, but we need to publish the correct facts, and Modern Athlete apologises for the mistake.
  18. What a wonderful lady. I hope a company backs here and gets her to some of the other big runs around the world. I read a post on the Modern Athlete Facebook page which said that the Geneva course does not qualify for a record breaking course though and that her run wouldn't count as a record breaker??
  19. Ran the Deloitte marathon yesterday. Great route from Ballito to Durban finishing on the promenade. Some long drags and sometimes boring sections on the M4. Good wind for most of the run but other than that weather seemed perfect. Ran along with two friends- two of us doing our first Comrades and one his first marathon. Plan was to simulate our target time through half way at Comrades with a 4h10 finish. Ran a steady pace throughout and hit our target spot on. Was amazing how many people we passed from about 20km and how many people seemed to be running the marathon at a significantly faster pace than they would be capable of at Comrades. Obviously not everyone that ran will be doing Comrades but some people's pacing seemed rather hectic?? I did think I would be feeling far fresher at the finish running the slower pace (can run a comforatble 3h40 42km) and now am unsure if we were in fact running too slow or if it is best for Comrades??
  20. Great race report! Where did you get the South African running vests from? I'm doing Chicago marathon this year and looking for South African clothing to run in
  21. That's incredible! What a comeback Must be the cap
  22. Being my first Comrades I don't particularly want to set any specific time goal but rather enjoy the day (if the pain is enjoyable which I highly doubt )... In light of that I'm thinking I need a basic "plan" in place in terms of time through halfway etc. I have run sub 3h40 marathons with my last one being treated as an easier training effort and therefore felt very good throughout. With this in mind if I were to plan on going through halfway at Comrades in around 4h10 would I still be on track for a Bill Rowan (obviously if nothing drastic happens in the second half)?? I'm nervous of going out too hard in the first half.
