  1. Does anyone know where to get Nike Zoom Fly Flyknit in the Pietermaritzburg or Durban area? Poobie Naidoo doesn't have any. Hoping to get a pair by this weekend
  2. Doesn't look like one will get a huge amount of mileage out of those
  3. Very solid first 21k! Well done! What might help for the next one is to do the longer runs at a slower pace and then try do an interval session once a week where you're running at a faster pace (hill repeats or flatter intervals). Club time trials and Parkrun will also help.
  4. What were your thoughts on the Live stream of Two Oceans? I thought it was really good. Good focus on the actual race, and no continual interruptions from interviews with politicians ala SABC 3. Cuan certainly knows his stuff too. He would do very well working on the big world Marathon events. Fantastic racing by Bongmusa and Gerda!!
  5. I just had a look now on the baa site for 2020. It looks like the times to qualify have reduced since I last looked. I'm now just over a minute below the required time. I suppose there is work to be done
  6. I think it's later in the year. Around September perhaps? I'm going to get my entry in. Hopefully my time is good enough.
  7. Boston Marathon on Supersport 9 at 15h00 today
  8. What is the availability like of the Nike Vaporfly 4% in SA at the moment?
  9. Thank you. Will look into that but it might be a bit of a trek to get there using public transport. From what I've seen in Europe we are very very spoilt in SA with the number of running events taking place every weekend in SA. Particularly loads of longer distance 21s and marathons.
  10. Stretch. Do you know of any running races taking place around Dublin next weekend (13/14 April)? I've found the Great Ireland 10k run so far
  11. Congrats on your first 21k! Brilliant! I still remember the stiffness after my first 21k during a period when I wasn't doing much running at all...it was something else. Some light rolling will help but don't do anything too hectic too soon. A very gentle jog the day or two days after also helps. And well done on joining a real club! Far better than the virtual clubs
  12. Who has done the Hillcrest 21km? It's on 10 February. Would you consider it a reasonably fast route or not?
  13. I did Surrender hill last year. Not as a qualifier but rather as a training run. Took it easy till around 30km then picked it up from there. Passed plenty of spent runners towards the end. In a way it's similar to Arthur Creswell (Bergville to Ladysmith) in that the field is quite small there can be long stretches of running alone, which helps with mental strength I believe. It's a challenging route and I suspect not a good one to use as a qualifier. Certainly much quicker routes out there. Would definitely recommend it as a great weekend away and as a bit of a vasbyt training marathon.
  14. Quite a large squad. Isn't Caroline divorced?
  15. You'll definitely benefit from doing Parkruns. In SA there is too much focus on running long distances. If one is able to improve on short distances it'll only lead to good things on the longer distances.
  16. I have both Salomon and Aonijie soft flasks. The Aonijie flasks are significantly cheaper (order from Aliexpress) and are very decent quality.
  17. A few weeks after the Om Die Dam is the Arthur Creswell 52km (21km event too) from Bergville to Ladysmith in KZN. Event is generally in the beginning of April and takes place on the Saturday so one can make a weekend out of it and possibly stay somewhere in the Berg or Midlands. Also a good option for those not doing Two Oceans. Although no road closure the road is generally very quiet in terms of vehicles. Field is small so can spread out a lot so there is the potential for lots of solitary running. Helps to make the mind strong for Comrades etc.
  18. Lessons from the Edge - Ryan Sandes and Ryno Griesel attempt the fastest known time for the Great Himalaya Trail. 1406km in 28 days. https://www.redbull.com/int-en/tv/video/AP-1XACHG37W2111/lessons-from-the-edge
  19. I could also bring back a few small items from Europe if needed (delivered to a U.K. address) as I'm returning to SA in two weeks.
  20. Maurten drink is a good one to try. Not sweet and neutral flavouring which is good for running. One can make your own drink though at a fraction of the cost. Many recipes out there with the main ingredients being pure carbs (maltodextrin), fructose, and a bit of salt and flavouring if you want any. For Comrades I made race cakes as used by cycling teams. Can be made with a neutral flavouring and are easy to digest. Not too convenient to carry like a Farbar but wrapped in tinfoil they're not too bad. http://thesuchef.com/2014/07/29/team-sky-rice-cakes/
  21. Talking of long treadmill efforts has anyone used Zwift for running? 12hr male treadmill record belongs to Australian Matthew Eckford who ran 147.3km in May this year.
  22. Depending on how well she is able to ride in a bunch and preserve energy without getting carried away I suspect you have a big challenge. I suspect she will be well under 4h40 (depending on tactical abilities of course). Running at about 4min/km for a 21km is rapid so the speed is there it's just a matter of slowing it down effort wise for a longer period. I have done my quickest Amashova of 2h43 off a purely running build up. It's far easier moving from running to cycling.
  23. I'm guessing this will be for the 2020 Boston as entries/registration for 2019 is closed? I have also achieved qualification standard for Boston and will certainly register for the 2020 event when they open, in case I never achieve qualification standard again. Perhaps we should plan a "bikehub runner" group for Boston?
