  1. I guess that's why everyone races through the neutral zone like bats out of hell...they know the timers have already started, despite what the announcer said.
  2. Further to above, at the moment I just have car insurance with Miway.
  3. Hi Eugene. Do you know of a short term insurance option...like a few weeks? I have borrowed a bike that I'd like to insure until I return it to its owner.
  4. Thanks for the helpful info. Will check out your suggested routes
  5. I am going to be spending a couple of days in the Wilderness area this weekend. Can anybody recommend some decent (and hopefully safe!) road routes? I was thinking of riding Outeniqua pass as part of a route. Wonder if anybody has ridden that and if it is safe to ride with respect to cars and trucks etc?
  6. After I got taken out by a car at an intersection on Sea Point Beach Road a few weeks ago, I can only echo others and advise extra caution when approaching all intersections. It doesn't matter if the light is green and you have right of way (as was the case for me). Sometimes motorists simply don't see you (negligently or not)...or else they completely underestimate your speed. Even though the motorist is culpable and wrong in the eyes of the law, you the cyclist will land up in hospital.
  7. My thanks to the posters in this thread who chipped in with advice and suggestions.
  8. How dreadfully unfortunate. Wishing strength to Philip and his family - pray he pulls through. That little side road is indeed a potentially deadly addition to the Suikerbossie descent if one is not concentrating 100%. (On a side note I was taken out by a car on Beach Rd, Sea Point 2 weeks ago. Totally the driver's fault. Bike written off and I wound up in Medi Clinic for the afternoon. Road cycling is becoming ever more dangerous/deadly I fear.)
  9. Thanks for your answer. Possibly I could get the shop in the UK to drop the UK VAT element...(probably they won't be able to) What leads you to think duties would not be incurred?
  10. I am considering ordering a Quarq power meter from the UK. (They say they deliver to SA). Can anyone recommend the best way to minimize VAT and duties etc. I would prefer to pay via Paypal and have it couriered to my Cape Town home address... or I guess the local post office is also acceptable. Thanks.
  11. I'm considering ordering a Quarq power meter from overseas. Roughly 630 GBP. Would anybody have an idea regarding SA duties and clearance on that? Then I'd also need to add VAT on top of that I guess? Perhaps it will wind up too expensive...
  12. Further to my post above, I see the 2019 race will indeed finish much lower down Odendaal Rd - before Pienaar St.
  13. Pity they are cutting out most of the N7... that Van Schoors Road is as rough as hell! Like a corrugated roof in sections. I recall reading reports after this year's race that too many riders were riding far out into the car lane on the N7 - and that the traffic authorities would never allow a cycle race there again for that reason. Does the 2019 race finish near the top of Odendaal Rd...or lower down? I wonder... It doesn't look like much of a rise at the very end according to that profile above. Whereas with past route profiles the Odendaal rise at the end was very distinct.
  14. I've decided to leave the moped in the garage and earn my seeding on merit
  15. What a joke if they use Strava. I may as well go on a few nice steady cruises on my moped and set some personal bests on Chapmans Peak, Suikerbossie, etc.
  16. Can't be good for the consumer. Monopolies/oligarchies never are.
  17. Hmm it would have been 2nd December this year. I think everyone is still around then. Not school holidays just yet, still weeks before Christmas... Are those other races you mentioned scheduled for early December?
  18. Why have they done this? It was perfect where it was.
  19. Very keen to ride Hans se Kop above Sir Lowry's pass. Can anyone link a 3D Veloviewer segment for it? I tried to, but I seem to only be able to do it for segments I've ridden myself. Wonder if it's still possible to ride it since someone mentioned they haven't been any attempts in 2018 according to Strava.
  20. I go through the ads regularly and am always amazed that so many sellers seem to ask almost full retail price for their 2nd hand stuff. No warranty, it's used, yet they think it's worth almost what it would sell for new in the shop. They're dreaming.
  21. I wonder if that was my girlfriend Blonde lady, white top? She was riding amongst the 1J &1K's and did 3:14. Apparently rode strong on Chappies and Suikerbossie.
  22. Phenomenal ride two hands. Hats off to you and your partner. I was in 1B and you guys caught my particular grouping in the Sunnydale area. When I glanced over to the right, I noticed a handful of 1D's coming through. I didn't realize at the time that the real heroes were the two 1E guys who instigated the carnage! On a side note, we met a few years ago before the Mont Ventoux stage of the Tour de France (2013). I was with our mutual friend, Roy. We went for a ride and a beer then watched the stage up on the mountain the following day. I recall you had ridden up the Mont Ventoux three times the same day a couple of days before!
  23. If that does happen I fear that the status of the race will be forever diminished. No longer something to train hard toward and make the season's main goal. Just a once great event that you enter for old time's sake, with the realization that it has become very vulnerable to disruption.
