  1. Ready to knock the weekend on its ass. http://thefighterlifestyle.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/29172ac1da3548940dbcba2aa379af69.jpg
  2. Time to start sprinkling salt and stock up on holy water.
  3. Heading towards the weekend.

  5. Downsizing (2017) 5/10. Completely mediocre movie suffering from an identity crisis. On paper it had all the ingredients for success: A decent cast, a fairly original script and the option to go in any direction with it. Unfortunately, instead of focusing on one or two things and doing them well this film tries to do everything so you are never sure what you are watching. It is at times a comedy, social commentary, drama, a love story, sci-fi disaster... Sadly, it tries so hard to do so many things that in the end it doesn't do any of them well and just leaves the viewer unsatisfied, wondering what was the point.
  6. Something like that would be fantastic, giving you a look at every decade's best films and allowing more categories since it only takes place every ten years.
  7. I treat the Oscars just like all the other critics: I agree with some, disagree with others. I always try to be honest about my bias, so I try to take into account that other film lovers will have their own bias as well. For instance, I know that the Oscars generally tend to favour dramas whereas I prefer action and comedy. Doesn't mean they're wrong and I'm right: It just means we are going to disagree about the "best" films of the year. What is important about the Oscars, imo, is that it is an acknowledgement of achievement and merit by people in the industry of people in the industry. Thus, I'm always happy when people like Guillermo del Toro and Jordan Peele get Oscars, because it means it will give them more authority and credit to start making the films they want to make, instead of the Hollywood films they are forced to make while working to earn recognition and respect in (from what I hear) is a very tough business.

When you really wanted to piss people off you'd open one of these in the classroom. Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
  9. Dachshunds are notoriously bitey. In fact, a UK study concluded they are the most aggressive of 33 breeds that were investigated. Jack Russells are third, which I agree with. I have a little JR who is twenty times quicker to growl and bark than my Staffie/bulldog cross, who just wants to lick everyone and everything. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/2254479/Sausage-dogs-are-the-most-aggressive-dogs.html Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

Anyone else remember this? I used to love it, would sometimes eat it straight out of the can: Ocean Fresh Curried Fish. http://southafricanshop.net.nz/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/SA-shop-pictures.jpg
  11. So, let's see: Best Picture - Shape of Water. Well, I'm happy for Del Toro. I preferred Three Billboards because I thought the story was more interesting, but by no means do I think SOW is a bad film. Leading Actress - Frances McDormand. Yes! Supporting Actor - Sam Rockwell. Yes! Director - Del Toro. Yes! Sound Mixing - Dunkirk. Haven't seen it yet but my brother did and he's mentioned it a few times, so good for Dunkirk, I suppose. Adapted Screenplay - Call Me By Your Name. Bugger (no pun intended). Romantic dramas aren't really my thing, so I can't comment on it because I doubt I'll ever watch it. Original Screenplay - Get Out. Well, not a bad movie and good for Jordan Peele. Again, I preferred Three Billboards but, like SOW, Get Out was a good alternative.
  12. Haven't seen everything and didn't care for everything I've seen. These are the only nominations I really care about and I only really care about two: Leading Actress and Supporting Actor. These votes are completely subjective and personal. Nominations I want to see win: Best Picture - Three Billboards Leading Actress - Frances McDormand Supporting Actor - Sam Rockwell Director - Guillermo del Toro Sound Mixing - Baby Driver Adapted Screenplay - Logan Original Screenplay - Three Billboards
  13. I'm not a big Jennifer Lawrence fan so I'm not in a hurry to watch it. I'll probably wait until it's released on VOD so I can watch it at home.
  14. The Shape of Water (2017) 7/10. It was good, but didn't really blow me away. Del Toro, as always, makes beautiful films to watch and he has a solid cast so I understand why some people rave about it. But the story felt somewhat predictable and most of the characters were caricatures and by the end of the movie I thought: Okay, watched that. Next? Just to put it into perspective, I think Three Billboards is a better film both in story and performances from main cast, while Water is prettier but without as much substance.
  15. Anyone seen Red State? Right wing Christians with assault rifles and crosses scare the bejeezus out of me.

    Who remembers?

Haven't been there in ages, but it was usually good fun. Mostly depends on who is playing, as it often is.
  17. Real deal! I posted a pic of the buns I baked in the cooking thread. I did, however, use an Instagram filter for the photo. Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

    Who remembers?

Our playground in the 90s was Pretoria. There was Navigator's close to Church Square, where I saw Valiant Swart and the Silver Creek Mountain Band. McCoys in Church Street, probably our favourite pub, because we got to know the bouncers and they could hook you up. Cherry's Too where I saw Koos Kombuis who was so trashed he had to ask the audience for help to remember the lyrics to his own songs. Later, when Tings 'n Times opened in Hatfield we were there so often we knew all the staff by name. Tings was immensely popular because they had a no under-21 and a completely attitude free policy. Besides great food, they were open till 2 in the morning and they had a small open roof where we would go and get stoned while there was a reserved sign on our table. Liquid State was popular because while it had a small dance floor there were lawns outside where people could sit and chill out. The big parties on Friday nights were at DNA, close to the train station, where they played hard dance music the whole night long until the sun came up. There were a few small other places that would open and close, but the biggest treat was getting in your car early on a Sunday afternoon and heading to ESP, the most amazing open air club where they would turn on the sprayers on hot days and Dizzy and Surge were worshiped as vinyl gods.
  19. Used my freshly baked rosemary and chilli buns to make cheeseburgers for lunch.

Heard about it a lot, but never seemed to find the time to make the trip to Durban. For us, ESP was the place to be.
  25. "Not as seen on TV": Still one of my favourite music videos and a cutting condemnation of the US's priorities.
