  1. With the 40% sag I would replace the air side seals as well. The wiper kit alone is about R300 - wipers and foam rings - and the full kit from RS around R650. You can get the o'ring seals and crush washers (not RS) for about R160 making the cheapest solution around R460 plus oil. Right now Cape Cycles do not have stock of the 32 mm wipers.
  2. Chain saw?
  3. I would not consider a change from Sora 8 speed to Ultegra 9 speed as much of an upgrade. Ultegra 9 speed was replaced with the 10 speed in around 2005, so a 9 speed you buy now has been around the block more than a few times. It is impossible to get new parts so you will be maintaining the groupset with Sora 9 speed parts anyway. My opinion is that it is not worth "upgrading" older road bikes. Second hand road bikes go for such reasonable prices that you may as well sell your old and get a newer one. As for the wheels the (Shimano) hubs are 8/9/10 speed compatible.
  4. What an unproductive thread today! Y'all watching TDF?
  5. If you are new to the Engen rides I suggest start on a Friday as this is the "recovery" ride. Wednesday is harder but a flatish route while Tuesday and Thursday are hard. The routes differ slightly each day and once you get to know them you can usually pick up a slower bunch if you are dropped. As there are a lot less riders in winter you may finish up on your own.
  6. Cyclo-cross, random access memory.......
  7. They seem to have disappeared off the face of Cape Town!
  8. Locktite 290 is the one! It will wick into the spoke threads when the wheel build is finished. There is usually enough lube left in the nipple to prevent it from bonding super tight. I have never had one stuck but if you do a quick heat with a gas lighter will soften it up - a trick I learnt from working on my Easton Circuits. Problem is it is not cheap - I have only found it in 50ml bottles at around R450. That is enough for more than a wheel!
  9. Locktite 290 but if there are enough spokes at the right tension it should not be necessary. Apply a drop to each nipple after building (and washing) the wheel.
  10. You are still a lightie. I was at work when you guys were playing these games. My vintage had the radio for entertainment. Mark Saxon, Creaking Door, Taxi and the Friday night special - LM Hit Parade! Corner shops had mechanical pin ball machines at best.
  11. Follow Johan's instructions for the shifter. Your problem sounds more like a cable issue. Replace the cable and housing. If all that does not work it may be the derailleur pivots or even the hanger alignment.
  12. I enjoy both of these races. Tour of Durban probably easier but that said I have been dropped on the climb......
  13. I have always enjoyed this race and route and Saturday was no exception. When the decision was made to batch the groups together I knew that it was race over for me and I was just going out to enjoy myself. When this happens it becomes a "hang on till you drop - then finish" race for a lot of the ladies and older guys. I can understand the frustrations of the guys fighting for podium but considering the weather and registration problems I can live with it. I am sure these will be ironed out for next time at least the organisers are listening. I hope that the Comms do as well. What really bites me is when you pitch for the provincial champs and they combine three batches, all with more than the published minimum numbers for an own start and then expect you to be happy. Needless to say I won't be at the Gauteng champs.
  14. Anyone know where the results are online?
  15. Sorry I don't but I did check out a while back and they were less than the Parktool equivalent. Any shop should be able to get you a price from Dragons.
  16. Martlet WD 12 bench disc sander. The things bike mechanics accept as payment! Anyone interested before I post on Gumtree? Very lightly used 306 disc dia. I will take R2000.
  17. Their shop models also look good value for money. I like their dishing tool as well - the Parktool WAG 4 that I have has been a big disappointment!
  18. Are there enough old timers to demand the return of the couch in the classifieds?
  19. It amazes me that the bicycle vendors suck so at putting people on bikes with suitable gearing. There are a number of solutions available and the optimum will depend on factors such as existing crank, derailleur cage size and available cassette sizes. All options cost unless specified on the new bike.
  20. I've used a Grand Cru threadless BB from Velo Orange for a stripped BB housing before.(Sq taper). Been on the bike for nearly 4 years and the bearings are replaceable.
  21. Novatec 482SB rear and 291 front. I build all my own and most of my customers wheels on Novatec. I just can't bring myself to spend big bucks on something that also has sealed bearings, straight axles and strong flanges. For others I build what they want. Usually I recommend Hope for the big guys - good service and readily available in 36 hole version. 4 crosses and a Flow rim gives a robust wheel. This one for a 127kg rider Apart from bearings- which can go in any hub - I have had a problem with a Novatec axle before. I have also had returns on Hope and DT Swiss but there are so many models and variants that you can't slate a brand for the exception.
  22. That is what you are looking at. Light Bicycle 45mm U shaped on Novatec. Ridden by hubber TheRob in VA bunch.
  23. I used Novatec 482SB rear and 291 front. Local prices are not bad and they keep 20/24 stock. I didn't mean to knock any agents - they obviously can't stock everything. I use Cutting edge and their service is excellent. Their DB straight pull range is from 290 to 306 mm. That rules out most deep section rims.
  24. Steer clear of straight pull. Decent ones are just so difficult to come by. Agents who stock locally only keep lengths for their own wheel designs and patterns. Also straight pull hubs force you into the designed pattern on the hub flange. I went for 24/28 on mine as that allowed me to get three crosses on the rear. In most cases you can only get the number of crosses = to the number of holes divided by 9. Also the more spokes that you have in the load affected zone of the rim the stronger the wheel, hence the 24 on the front even though I can only get two crosses and I only weigh 69kg. For ease I also went for round Revolution spokes as with bladed ones unless you regularly straighten the spokes you don't get any advantage. The result is good strong wheels that I can let customers test and still fly on when I race.
  25. Such a nice feeling to send out a set that you are proud of. I on the other hand have spent a lot of unproductive time on an Eurus "high tech" piece of ...... Spokes R250 ea but the rim "Unavailable as the new model is out". We can give you a rear wheel at R9999 or a set at R15000. Pricey pot hole. Oh for the days when 32 hole J bend double butted good quality wheels were considered desirable.
