  1. I was wondering if there were any clubs or of groups at intermediate or lower level going on rides in the cane fields at Mount Edgecome on a Sunday morning? I was keen to join a club/group. I know there are guided rides on a Saturday morning but I can't make it then. I am happy to get my EMBA license to join a group on an weekly or adhoc basis.
  2. If I buy a slx or a deore or a xt group set, what really is the difference? What benefit do you get for the extra cash? About to upgrade my spark 950 components and looking at the prices it's from 3500 to 17500 for a group set. And please if you can be specific, don't say speed or effort
  3. Why is it easier for me to execute a tight left turn on a single track? I find it much more difficult to go right. I thought it was because I am right handed and my right leg (outside leg on the turn) is dominant and therefore I have more control, but today I spoke to a left handed cycling buddy and he has the same problem. I surf left foot forward and uncleat left first.
  4. Downhill World Champion Greg Minnaar (Santa Cruz Syndicate) took his World Champs rainbow jersey to his local track and claimed victory in his first race since his knee operation late last year, posting a winning time of 3 minutes 17.631 seconds in the opening round of the Southern African MTB Cup Series in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, today. 8. I was wondering what is a good entry level GPS one could use for mountain biking? I apologise if this is a stupid question but how does one get the data of the trails into the GPS for places like Howick that have GPS data? Is there an app that one can buy/download that can do the same job as a standalone GPS for an iPhone?
  9. Hi, I am looking out for riders that want to meet at the Lower Gate of Rhodes Memorial and go for a quickish ride over Plum Pudding, either way. The idea is to ride as a group sometime between 12:30 and 13:30 for safety reasons and for riding in the light of day. Thanks Phill
  10. Good day Im looking to buy a decent set of double sided pedals having Clipless on one side and a big platform on the other side. Im looking at the Shimano PD-A530 but as they are for road I am not sure if they will last if used for MTB. Opinions and thoughts welcome.
  11. Hello, I've got a "sticky" front axle, and the wheel is difficult to rotate. Spinning the wheel freely - off the bike - it rolls smoothly and noiselessly. Once I put the wheel in place and lock the axle in place, the wheel is difficult to spin. If I loosen the axle a bit, the wheel spins normally. But, then it is loose and not safe to ride. What could be the problem?
  12. I am converting a roadie frame into a single speed commuter. I have been been given a Shimano MTB crankset for free. But now I am confused as to which BB to put on the bike. Do I put on a MTB BB and the put the spacers on the frame side? Or do I put on a road BB to fit the frame and then put the spacers on the crank side (outside) of the BB? Have I made a boobie by having to choose a BB? PS: if anyone knows where I can get a set of FREE road brake callipers you would rock a lot!
  13. The new venue for the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Momentum MTB Challenge drew a sold out field to the Le Bonheur Wine Estate in Stellenbosch, and a host of world class riders littered the start line for the 55km route. Click here to view the article
  14. There is a long downhill section in this weekends Argus MTB called Ho Chi Minh (Strava appears to call it that), its the long narrow section with bamboo looking reeds (hence Ho Chi Minh) does anyone know if its publicly accessible? And from where?
  15. Hi hubbers Semi-rooki mtber here, I'd just like to know if anyone can tell me if the Giant P-XC2 29er wheelset comes with Sealed bearing hubs? Are sealed hubs the way forward or is it a personal preference type of decision as I am needing to replace my wheelset and I know little about what I am needing to look for? Thanks for the help
  16. This morning we saw a metallic red Mazda one tonner bakkie (Reg nr MRZ ...GP) with tinted windows with a bike rack on the back, parking at the pedestrian entrance to Hazeldean Farm on the Mooiplaas road in Pretoria East. Three individuals, not dressed as cyclists, got out and two went into Hazeldean farm along the road used by dozens of cyclists, on their way to Rosemary Hill. One of them stayed at the bakkie. The fact that these guys were very obviously not cyclists, wore jackets that can easily conceal weapons and the fact that they got out of the bakkie to walk into a field where cyclists normally cycle at that time of the morning, while the bakkie stayed behind seemed very suspicious to us. We carried on along the Mooiplaas road to avoid them, because neither of us were armed. Please be on the lookout for these guys because I am pretty sure that they are bike-jackers. If anyone sees the bakkie again, please see if we can get the complete registration number.
