  1. Hi all, I know this has been asked a million times but since a lot of the 2014 models are coming out this might be useful info for others as well. I am looking at getting a new mountain bike and after a lot of investigation I decided to go for a 29" or maybe a 27.5". My budget is <R10k and I had the following models in mind: 2014 Merida Big 7 300 2014 Merida Big Nine 300 2014 Titan 29er Comp 2014 Momsen AL229 The Titan has a Rock Shox XC32 Silver Solo Air Fork and the Momsen a Suntour SR XCR AIR HLO 100. The Merida's either mention the SR 29 XCM HLO 100 or the RST F1rst Air not sure which one they have. Momsen has SRAM X5 Derailleurs while the others have Shimano SLX / M390. Tektro HDC 300/301 brakes except for the Titan with Shimano M430 brakes. What do you think?
  2. Hi Hubbers. I need to service my Rock Shox SID fork, where in your experience is the best place in Cape Town? I'm thinking Olaff at Crosstown Cycles or BMC in Woodstock? Price and service considered. Thanks!
  3. I've taken my fork apart to adjust the travel from 80mm to 100mm. (Reba, think about 2008 model) I only found one 15mm c shaped spacer inside. Now this may be a silly question, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. Do I just take the spacer out and run it without any spacers or do I have to have a spacer in there? The spacer measures 15mm, so I'm not sure I will be getting a full 100mm travel either?
  4. After 5 years my rear shock is starting to give trouble. Now I have to decide between Rock Shox or Fox or more specifically Monarch RL or Floar RL? Can get both for roughly the same price. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!
  5. Saw this special on Buycycle. Is it any good? http://www.buycycle.co.za/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=1053
  6. Hey guys Need some advice. Which bike to get between these bikes? 910: R35 000 920: R29 500 Giant anthem advanced (carbon): R32 000 Difference between 910 and 920 : Fox evolution on the 920 vs fox factory on 910 SLX brakes on 920 vs XT on 910 SLX shifters on 920 vs XT on 910 3x10 on 920 vs 2x10 on 910 135x12 on 920 142 x12 on 910 Anthem: Full XT Rockshox SID RL fork Rockshox monarch rear shock Thanks
  7. Hi There I am looking to upgrade my front fork from a Suntour XCR to an air fork. I have been scouring the net and 2 forks catch my eye. Both are roughly the same price but I'm not sure which would be a better choice. The 2 forks are the Rockshox Reba RL Dual Air (2012) and the Rockshox Reba RL Solo Air (2013). Both are new and size 29". Which one would you reccommend and why? Thanks Mike
  8. I recently bought myself a Specialized stumpjumper expert. The bike came stock with a Sid Brain 80mm. Now the question is. Can I use the spacers from my Sid RLT to make it 100mm. If so who is the best person to send this to in the pta area? Cheers Meent
  9. Hi Guys, A little input would be greatly appreciated if possible. Bought a brand new 2013 Reba RLT 29' and installed it at the begining of the year. I have accumulated 2800km so far on it and just wondering what sort of service interval I need to impose on the fork? I have kept it clean as possible and there is no play at all, with the seals in 100% condition. I've had a look through the service manual from the website but no time or distance limitations imposed that I can see from Rockshox. Got a five day event coming up which should put the km count over 3300km by the time I get back to SA. Is this a take it as it comes type thing or any hard and fast rules to stick to wrt to servicing ones fork? Rgds, Timasin.
  10. I bought a 2009 Cannondale F3 Caffeinne on an impulse. The bike is virtually new, but I am a bit worried about the Headshok DLR80 maintenance issues and spares availability going forward. Anybody with experience? How would maintenance costs on the headshok compare to say a Rockshox Recon?
  11. Hi guys. I am fearly new to MTB, so yor opinions will help me I have a Rock Shox Reba dual air fork on my bike. It is a quick release. The problem is that there is a lot of flex in the front wheel when cornering downhill. Should I replace/repair the quick release or invest in a through axel fork?
  12. Anyone know which Anthem this is? The guy selling it doesn't know !!?? Looks like a 2013 Anthem X3 frame but someone has spent a bit upgrading it: It has full XT, Avid Elixir brakes levers, Fox forks (not sure which), Rock Shox Monarch at the back. I'm also assuming the rims didn't come with the bike - C29SSMAXX. Any idea as to which Anthem it is and what a decent price on it would be?
  13. Hey Hubbers My current fork an old Maverick SC which is really really plush is or has almost reached its end of life. 2 popped seals on the front brake side and the subsequent loss of braking power and suspension in less than 6 rides is pushing me to shop around for a replacement. So what should I be looking at? I am not keen on a rigid fork of any kind! Its looking like Rockshox or Fox at this point. I want something popular that I can get fixed on day 2 of Sani for example. (You guessed it no one would touch the Maverick) Oh and if it can be a good weight and plush, it must be plush! Budget will most likely top out at R3-4K Any tips or advice would be appreciated! Mike
  14. I need some advice on options to upgrade my Raleigh Nomad 10 to a DS bike. Current specs on Nomad: XT derailleurs, crank, cluster, disk brakes SLX shifters, Mavic Crossride wheelset (tubeless conversion) Rock Shox Reba RL fork. Raleigh (RGP) seat and post, FSA bar and stem, etc I assume with the correct frame I can re-use all spares on a new DS frame? Which of these parts can be re-used on a 29er build? If I don’t re-use some of these parts, should I break up the nomad and sell separately, if not, what is a reasonable asking price for the bike as is (frame has some normal scratches and chips) Any advice?
  15. Hi peeps Unfortunately for my finances I'm one of those guys who always wants to upgrade whatever I have, it's like a disease Here's the deal - I don't care about winning any races etc, my main focus is comfort, durability etc. I want to get on my bike and be a proud owner, I must enjoy it and feel as though it's perfect for me. I (like any other individual) prefer components work as effective as possible and do what they are supposed to do (Groupset - provide fast, smooth and efficient shifting/braking and fork provide a smooth ride, absorbing bumps and relieving your arms from a lot of strain). My current setup Groupset: (3x10) Shifters: SRAM X5 Crankset: SRAM S800 FD: SRAM X5 RD: SRAM X7 Brakes: Avid Elixir 1 Fork: Rock Shox XC 32 TK air (2133g) I must say I do like the fork thus far, except for the fact that it has chrome upper tubes which is difficult to keep clean, but it is a soft fork and really provides a smooth ride up front. The down side is it's heavy, and like I said the chrome upper tubes. A fork upgrade will save me about 500-600g overall. The groupset does provide smooth shifting, thus far, but the brakes are junk. I would also like for all components to be the same, as in one groupset. I know that different parts work the same but it's a psychological thing for me, it's as if XT was made to be grouped with XT components etc and another groupset has the added benefits of better brakes. So what I have to choose between is: SLX groupset - 2x10 or 3x10? Rock Shox Reba Your inputs will be appreciated
  16. Hi guys, I am interested in getting me a 2014 Merida. This model is just under 13kg’s. What I would like to know from you hubbers is that if in the future I wanna upgrade parts on this bike to make it weigh a bit less, what can I get, what do you guys recommend. Also how many grams or kilo’s can one shave off this bike. Current Parts on the bike is: 2014 Big Nine Models 500 Frame Big Nine TFS-D Size 15-17-19-21-23 Fork Rock Shox XC30TK29 100 BB Set Shimano octalink B-Lever attached Brake-F Shimano M445 180 cen Brake-R Shimano M445 160 cen B-Cable attached Chain KMC X10 10s Chainwheel Shimano M522 octa 42-32-24 DERA-F Shimano Deore H35 triple DERA-R Shimano XT Shadow Freewheel Shimano CS-HG62-10 11-36 Grip MERIDA Screw on-Single H-Bar MERIDA comp OS 680 Flat H-B Stem Merida NC OS 7 Head Set EGG steel Hub-F Shimano M435 cen Hub-R Shimano M435 cen Pedal XC Alloy Rim Big Nine comp D Saddle MERIDA Pro SI Seat Clamp MERIDA pro QR Seat Post MERIDA comp SB12 27.2 Shifter-F Shimano Deore Shifter-R Shimano Deore Spoke Black stainless Inner Tube Ultralite-29 Tire-F Merida Race lite 29er 2.1 fold Tire-R Merida Race lite 29er 2.1 fold Thanks!!
  17. Hello Everyone, Sorry that my first ever post here had to be this... My Scott Aspect 920 was taken from my garage in the early hours of the morning on the 7th of July. It has a black frame and while lettering and graphics. Still has the Schwalbe Rapid Rob tyres on it. Shimano gears and brakes and rock shox at the front. I put on Giant LED lamps at the front and rear. And it has a little underseat tool pouch. I will update with photos a little later. Cheers, Eugene
  18. Can someone please assist, I need a service kit, incl all seals and dust wipers, for my RockShox Recon TK (32mm). None of the LBS has stock and I can’t find any online Thanks Fanie
  19. I'm looking at the forks for sale at on-one and the Rockshox RLT comes with a choice of 9mm or 15mm axles. Seeing as my experience only runs as far as using normal (thin) skewer axles, what is the difference and which should I be getting for a SS marathon / commute bike?
  20. Woke up at 4 this morning to the sound of my bike being stolen... Bastards. Got stolen from the back seat of my car in Faerie Glen, Pretoria. Make: 2010 Ellsworth Truth Colour: Smoke anodized Full Sram XO RockShox SID XX 3T carbon cockpit Thompson elite seatpost Shimano XT pedals. Brand new. just fitted- never even ridden :-( ZTR Olympic rims Bike exaclty as in photo, except for the different pedals. Wish they rather stole the car !
  21. Hi All, I need you advise and opinion, I can lay my hands on a Rock Shox Recon Gold(at a good price), I currently have a SR Suntour Raidon X1 Air(less than 1 year old) will it be worth my while to sell the Suntour and buy the Rock shox? Your opinion and advise will be appreciated.
  22. Recently purchased a RS Reba 2013 solo air RLT. Now I have owned both a SID and Reba before but didn't really fiddle to much with it(except for running 10psi less in neg chamber, which now falls away with the solo air) and then moved over to a fox f29 which doesn't have a whole lot to play with regarding settings. My question is really around the threshold adjust / floodgate dial. What is your preferred setting regarding this, I like a firm lockout which would suggest turning it all the way(clockwise) to it firmest setting but what do I loose in the process...ie what is the other side of the coin if I go this option...could I damage internals if I have it on its max "stiffness" setting on big hits etc Lets hear it.
  23. Mate of mine's brand new Momsen SL 729 was stolen last night at 02h30 from his place at Craighall Park on Delta Park (he stays in between Fratelli's and Delta on the riverside). Look S-Trac pedals, XT gruppo & Arch EX rims on SRAM X9 hubs, Schwalbe Racing Ralphs tyres, Rock Shox REBA RL, Fi:zik Nisense saddle Got it yesterday afternoon only to get it stolen last night. Please keep an eye out.. EDIT: specs & pic
  24. Looking at getting a AM/FR fork, and saw that Suntour had a recent-ish addition to its range of the Durolux. It seems to have 1 or 2 good reviews, and is about half the price of its competitors (was originally looking at getting a Rock Shox Lyrik or Marzocchi 66 ATA). Anyone had any experience with these new ones? Or should I bite the bullet and go for one of the others?
  25. I've been trying to figure our the options with the matchmaker clamp system, and a been left feeling a bit confused. Maybe its all the xmas pies ... Seems they are orientated towards putting the trigger shifters on the brake clamps? What I have (build is work in progress) is SRAM X0 3x10 Twisters, Hope X2 Brakes and a Rockshox hydraulic remote on either side. Left one for Lefty XLR Speed lock out, right one for dropper seat post (thanks Carbon29niener for the good deal) What I am wanting to do is combine the remotes on the brake clamps - is this possible with the matchmaker system? Not that I am short on real estate with the 660mm FSA bars I have, but the style I roll is 'less is more' These are the Hope Tech Matchmaker clamps: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Images/Models/Full/41014.jpg This is the Rock Shox lockout: http://www.cannondale-parts.de/WebRoot/Store20/Shops/61764971/4DD9/28F7/28CA/0EC6/3792/C0A8/29B9/EEE4/DSCN5048.JPG Can't really see how the remote can be fitted on the clamps, or is there a way? http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Interface/Icons/ListingBestSellerEn.gif
