Halflink chain does not guarantee that you'll be able to get rid of the tensioner, I tried one out, but with limited success. Ended up buying a different frame with horizontal dropouts before battling too much with the chain.

Also, word of caution, the measure twice "cut" once addage applies. Be careful to get the length right when splitting the halflink...

Ya a halflink is a nightmare to deal with using a common garden variety chaintool! I'm getting a Niner frame with vertical drops soon, hope I get lucky re using the halflink without tensioner. WRT chain tension at the moment I have sliding dropouts which tend to do exactly that quite frequently...slide... and I've found with a proper SS chainring, cog and wide chain you really do not have to be too worried about dropping a chain due to chain tension as it has sometimes in the past ended up quite pap, almost to the point of slamming the chainstay, to no ill effect.

Broke a "common garden variety chaintool" on the chain, hence my caution... I've got the Paul tugs to combat the sliding problem, does however make changing the wheels a challenge, but ensures that the wheel is always perfectly placed, otherwise you end up adjusting brake calipers constantly... Pro's and cons to everyting I suppose.

I ended up using a tensioner.

I had a Singular with EBB which meant changing seat height all the time and there isn't enough movement in the EBB for more than 2-3 teeth difference.

Sliders are a PITY as you pointed out.

Bought me a Niner MRC and chain tensioner and life is pretty sweet. Not the cleanest look but nice and functional.

I've been running a 9 speed chain for about 9 months now on the ss, no problems. For me, the secret is ss specific chainring and cog.

On the subject of chain tension, I would love a frame with Paragon Machine Works sliding dropouts. Problem is that there are just a few bike out there fitted with them. Ragley TD1, Vassago Black Series. Would trade my wife in for one of those bikes.
