prepare yourself for a long thread!

MTB will probably reduce leg speed a bit but it will definitely make you stronger and improve your bike handling skills. Who knows, maybe you'll become another convert :D

I'm with velouria about the suffering. I've race road at elite level from single day stuff to 6 day multi stage events. Nothing comes even close to the suffering I put myself through on a MTB!

Agree with others on the leg speed and also the 'jumps' that road racing brings about, MTB is more consistent effort over a long period of time road racing often has the stop start of the attacks and MTB riders will not replicate that - but as Velouria says a bit of training solves that!

For what its worth I used to be a pure roadie - been doing a little mtbing (25% of my training) to diversify the training and scenery and Iv definitely become a stronger road rider as a result - WITHOUT DOUBT. Mtb has helped a lot where it matters in a road race, the accelerating on climbs and being able to grit it out on a climb.

So it does help................if done properly ofcourse!

If you turn this thread on its head, Road riding makes you a stronger MTB rider, and it provides a great base for MTB riding.

My honest opinion is that any form of riding if done properly will never hurt you as a cyclist.

hey guys

I'm looking to get into the MTB scene. Does all the hard uphills etc. tend to make one slower when you switch back to the road?

Thanks

Well I live in Somerset West and we have some hard core uphills on our roads. I just find it ironic that I no longer see road bikes on taking them on, its guys on their MTBs :) ... I think MTB give you more guts even when just riding on tar as you can easily bunny hop the curb and cut shortcuts through fields.

Perhaps its our baggie gear that makes us less wind resistant vs the tight fitting Lycra sausage brigade outfits.

If I didnt start with MTB'ing, I doubt I would have improved my seeding so much, made me strong and fast....the road cycling just helps with endurance which means cardiovascular strenght....so both have a positive effect.

I wouldn't like to cycle up Irene without that granny gear.
