This is from an email I got from a friend.

"A young cyclist was killed yesterday on the Audax ride. It was in Devon, 8km into the ride and they were riding three abreast. A truck approached from behind and the cyclist tried to swerve in, but clipped his mate and then swerved back out into the path of the truck's wheels.

The truck driver did not even know what had happened, but thought someone might have tried to hijack him, as it is a hotspot. Imagine his surprise when he returned to the scene with the police, to find a dead cyclist! We have our account from one of the Cycle Lab members, who was riding just behind these riders."

My condolences to his family.

Wow, must have been inches from the truck at the time.

I often think some of these 36 wheelers would not even know if they rode over you - the dynamic forces of the truck as it gos past are so great if you got sucked under a wheel, I doubt they would even feel it.

Very upsetting, but these Audax events are in my opinion very dangerous, I have done a few and stopped when a buddy riding with me hit a hole and went over the bars, of course with an Audax there was no assistance and luckily we stopped a passing motorist who agreed to take him to hospital. On the lonely roads these events cover and at the times (dark), in my opinion its just far too dangerous.

We were part of a small group which came about 10 min after. It was a terrible situation and even though we had a doctor riding with us and she tried everything his injuries were just to much. There were two other minor accidents before this that I am aware. You then want to ask the question that with the small amount of cyclists on the day and the number of accidents was it just one of those days or is this something that needs to be looked at. I must admit it is not a nice thing to see a fellow cyclist die next to the road especially if you lost a friend a month ago because of a freak cycling accident. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends.

We decided not to ride this audax for similar reasons given by GOG. My wife and I often end up riding these events by ourselves and I no longer wish to take the risk of something happening to us on a deserted stretch.

A few years ago we abandoned a 400km audax as I did not think the risk of riding the section between Potch and Carltonville in the dark was worth a finishing stamp. BTW I can recommend a very cycling friendly B and B in Potch.

Condolences to the family.

Hearing about accidents like this makes me think about only riding events that have full road closeur like Amashova,94.7 and Argus.

Will have to stick to my MTB.

One question = quote:"8km into the ride and they were riding three abreast" = Is this true?

I was supposed to ride but had to cancel (I am now glad I did). This is what my friend mailed me, she was there.

Hi Chris

We missed u today. We however only ended up doing 150km's as there was a terrible accident

a guy in our group went over the white line and an oncoming truck went into him

it was horrific, he unfortunately died on the side of the road

we are all very shocked and so didn't feel like carrying on - so we just had to get home

Seems like there is two very contradictory stories here, one says from the back, and one says from the front.?

Either way, its very upsetting, especially for those who witnessed it.

I was really pissed off I couldn't make it to ride the Audax yesterday but I am relieved I didn't have to witness this

Hectic!

Condolences to the friends and family.

Maybe it is a sign for the Audax organisers to up the safety a bit more?

Thats just it, there is no back up, no safety, no ambulance on stand by, no nothing, zip, nada, squat, you get a map and a card and they wave goodbye, see ya in X hours....or maybe not,..... you are on your own.

...and you actually pay for that privilidge.
